  • Kelly Parrish

Sending condolences to Denise’s family. I knew Denise and John as a little girl, always looked up to them both … RIP xx
  • Janet Carrigan

On behalf of Elaine Mayberry and family, our thoughts are with Denise’s family. Denise was a very good friend of Elaine. They played tennis together. Denise would always stop for a chat with Mum when we lived in Marshall Street, Dapto in the 60s. I remember Denise walking with her pram and if she saw us playing in the yard she would call out and wave and we would run through the Dolan’s back yard to Elizabeth Street to say hello.RIP Denise.

Christopher Andrew McINTOSH, Chris McINTOSH

Christopher Andrew McINTOSH, Chris McINTOSH Bankstown policeman, Constable Chris McINTOSH recently took charge of a gleaming new patrol bike and although it is capable of hitting 125 miles an hour, represents safety for members of the public. Constable McINTOSH told last week how he chased a speeding motorist some time ago with the car reaching more than 90 miles an hour on Hume Highway between Woodville Rd and Yagoona. Constable McINTOSH was riding a bike which has since been disposed of by the Police Department. If he had had the new cycle he now rides, the chase would have been over earlier and thus danger to the public would have been reduced. The new machine is a Honda 750 of four cylinders and other car on Australian roads could out run or out manoeuvre it. Constable McINTOSH has been riding motor cycle for eight years, five of them with the Police Department. The bike is two seconds faster than the latest Phase three Falcon GTHO over a standing quarter mile and reaches 105 miles an hour from rest in 12.6 seconds. It weights about 530 pounds with large disc brake at the front and live speed gearbox.

Shortly after 9.30am on 22 September, 1973 Constable McIntosh was riding a Police Special Traffic Patrol solo motor cycle from Bankstown Police Station to Lakemba. As he was travelling along Wattle Street a panel van travelling in the opposite direction made a right turn in front of the police cycle. Constable McIntosh was unable to avoid a collision and the cycle struck the side of the van. The constable died as a result of injuries received in the collision.

The constable was born in 1946 and joined the New South Wales Police Force on 8 August, 1966. At the time of his death he was attached to the Traffic Branch.

My deepest condolences to Steve, his wife Wendy and four kids – Grant, Amanda, Mitchell & Renee.

Greg Callander # 17463

Steve was diagnosed with a lung disease, years earlier, and was on the transplant list, although he deteriorated prior to a suitable lung being found.

Steve was a good hearted and very funny bastard when I worked with him at Fairfield Police Station.

In his early days, at Fairfield, we were on Night Shift driving around the CBD when we were given the details of a vehicle which had recently been stolen in the area.

We were in a Holden sedan with a single roof bar which only had a blue revolving light in the centre and the old pull / push button ‘Were’ siren ( manually pulling and pushing the toggle switch produced the siren sound as the mechanic component spun around ).

A short time later we driving towards the Horsley Dve when we spotted the stolen vehicle turn in front of us with ‘4 heads on board’.

In those days we only had 4 working police radio channels and all Warrant and Vehicle enquiries were made on the ‘back channel’.  Steve went to the ‘back channel’ and did a transport check ( just to confirm we had the correct vehicle – which we did ).

He sat there dumb founded ( this was his first stolen car ).  I told him that he had better go back to the ‘working’ channel and tell VKG – which he did.

I wasn’t in a hurry to stop the stolen vehicle and it wasn’t being driven in an unusual manner.  We followed it out to Smithfield whilst awaiting other Police vehicles to come to the area.

It was now time to make the Stop.  The stolen vehicle casually approached a Stop sign and complied with it.  I then drove up alongside the drivers door to indicate to the driver to pull over.  At this time, Steve leant out of the passenger door of the Police car, with his small rubber baton in hand and attempted to hit the driver as he commenced to drive off.  One of the funniest bloody things I have ever seen.

We pursued the stolen vehicle down into the Merrylands patrol where the offenders abandoned the vehicle alongside of the old Wool Shed and decamped on foot.

The offenders were run to ground ( we were hell of a lot fitter back in those days ), arrested and taken to Fairfield Police Station where they were charged.
