The engagement is announced of Miss Shirley Paxton, elder daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Paxton, of Geurie, to Mr. Mervyn Braithwaite, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. W. Braithwaite, of Wongarbon.

The local tennis season opened last Sunday under ideal conditions. A calm day of glorious sunshine, courts in perfect order and twenty couples eager to play, made the opening most pleasant.
An American tournament was conducted, run in two divisions, honours going to J. Fogarty and Mervyn Braithwaite in the men’s first grade, whilst Mrs. D. Greenwood won the lady’s trophy.

World War II veteran Harry Coggan, holding the portrait taken for Reflections: honouring our WWII veterans project and now at the Australian War Memorial.
The Covid-19 enforced cancellation of community Anzac Day commemorations came as a shock to all of us, but none more so than Harry Coggan.
The World War II veteran has barely missed an Anzac Day march in 75 years, and this Sunday he looks to continue that, although he’ll be transported by car.
The well-known retired local police officer and sportsman is not one to speak much of his service with the Air Force in the war years, but Anzac Day remains an important day.
Harry was an apprentice carpenter in Morisset, near Newcastle, in the war years when the work ran short.
He was only 16 at the time, but managed to follow his boss into the Civil Construction Corps and spent the next two years travelling and working with the service.
As soon as he legitimately turned 18, Harry joined the Air Force. After his training, he began work as an airframe fitter.
The Air Force took him from Victoria to Queensland, then eventually on to Japanese-occupied Tarakan for the Allied landing there in 1945. He then served in Borneo.
The atrocities of war remain unspeakable and Mr Coggan is quiet about his own service, but each year he has marched to honour service men and women of all wars and asks that we continue to do so.
“I didn’t do it for any glory, I don’t glorify it,” he says, it was what the young men of his generation did. Many of his friends joined the defence forces.
Every year he marvels at the number of young people who turn out to Anzac Day commemorations, a photograph with his grandsons at the local cenotaph has pride of place in his room.
“I sincerely hope that the youth of today will keep going, it’s a very important thing,” he said.
Harry went back to his carpentry boss after his return from World War II but there was no longer work for him there. He joined the police force and spent time in Newcastle, Maitland and Hay.
It was in Hay, purchasing a fundraiser badge for the hospital, that he met his wife Noreen, and with her that he moved to Forbes where they raised three children in the community he loves.

Member for Riverina and Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack travelled to Forbes recently to present a special commemorative medallion to World War II veteran Harry Coggan.
Mr McCormack said every living WW II veteran was eligible to apply for a medallion and a certificate, which are being presented by the Federal Government to say “thank you for your service” on the 75th anniversary of the end of the devastating six-year-long conflict.
“Over the past 75 years, time has healed wounds, both physical and emotional, and time has taken many of our World War Two veterans, but it will never take away our eternal gratitude for their service and sacrifices which defended the freedoms we enjoy today,” Mr McCormack said.

Forbes’ traditional Anzac Day harness race meeting – and the Carnival of Cups on the following Sunday – is coming up fast.
Forbes Harness Racing has just appointed a new committee, with Braden Sullivan taking on the presidency. Bob Parsons, who has served four years in the role, did not seek re-election.
Braden, the grandson of club life members Bob and Rosemary Lee, has been described as one of the youngest presidents in the club’s history.
His family forms the backbone of the local harness racing club, says long-time member Bruce Chandler.
Parsons, who remains on the committee, has overseen some major changes in his time as president including the return to TAB racing after a 20-year absence and the introduction of an Anzac service.
“Bob spent many hours overseeing a major upgrade of the track including the surface and configuration changes,” Chandler said.
The club will also miss Sally Spence as canteen coordinator. Her sister Jenny Sullivan will take this on.
“Without doubt the Forbes canteen is one of the best of all harness racing clubs,” Chandler said. “The money that the canteen has raised in (Sally’s) time has gone a long way to keeping the club afloat.”

More than 100 family members and friends gathered at Forbes Sports and Recreation Club on new year’s day to celebrate Harry Coggan’s 90th birthday.
Harry is a very well known former NSW Police Senior Sergeant who was attached to the Forbes command when he retired 30 years ago.
At his birthday celebrations, John Bentick made a complimentary speech and thanked Harry on behalf of the Forbes community for his help and dedication to the community over so many years.
Mr Coggan is still a very active 90 year old and a regular at the Sport and Rec Club.
He served as club president for a term whilst he was in his late 80s.
He was certainly not shy when he made his speech, thanking family and friends who had travelled considerable distances for his birthday and giving a brief autobiography.
Born at Avondale near Morriset, he grew up in this area attending primary school at Morriset and later at the Gosford High School.
After leaving school at 15 he started work as a carpenter. At 16 (during the war years) he joined the ‘Civil Construction Core’ taking him from Morriset to Brisbane, Townsville and Cairns.
At 18 Harry joined the Australian Air Force and was posted overseas from Townsville.
Whilst overseas in Borneo he was involved in the Morotal and landing of Taracan campaigns returning to Australia in 1946.
In 1947 Harry joined the NSW Police Force, following training in Sydney he was posted to Maitland then Hay where he met and married his life partner Noreen Croft.
In his speech, Harry spoke lovingly and at length of his wife, who sadly passed away a few years ago.
After their marriage in Hay, the police department transferred Harry and Noreen to Temora where their daughter Theresa was born, then on to Henty where Phillip was born and later to Corowa where Ann-Maree was born.
The police department continued with the transfers and the family managed to avoid Sydney and continue with country policing, working at Young, Nowra and finally at Forbes where Harry retired at the end of 1985.
It is especially pleasing to see Harry so happy during his lengthy retirement.
He remains very active, likes to follow the local football, especially the “pub draws”.
Harry still has his carpentry tools and he has been known to do the odd bit of wood work.
A big thank you has to go his daughter Ann-Maree who organised the celebration, a most enjoyable and pleasant evening held on the new rear deck at the club overlooking the beautiful Forbes Lake.

The contest was tough on the paceway last Friday for the Forbes Anzac Harness Race meeting, but the Diggers Cup was taken, for the first time, by Grenfell driver Mark Hewitt with Bronze Sign.
Bronze Sign is owned by BS and BD Shields.
The mauve sash and sleeves of Hewitt lead all the way in the $1500 race and crossed the finish line 16.5m by a neck.
Second place was Forbes local Terence Hush on Chief Fairman and third was Nathan Townsend, Alectown, on Three Point Turn NZ.
Forbes Diggers Harness Racing spokesman Bruce Chandler said the racing day had a great atmosphere and the recently resurfaced track held up well.
“We’ve had a good crowd and it’s been a beautiful day,” he said.
“The racing has been strong and the new track has held up really well.”
A good crowd took to the sidelines to support the riders and to commemorate Anzac Day, the Last Post was played and the national anthem sung.

The Catholic Ball held in Maitland City Hall on September 20th was an outstanding success. Over 550 people attended the ball, which was organised by a committee with Mrs. A. Enrigth ( President ), Miss E. Allsop ( Treasurer ), and Miss M. McLeod ( Secretary ).
Huge bowls of peach blossoms, Iceland poppies, and trails of wistaria produced a spring atmosphere. Eighteen debutantes were presented to His Lordship, Most Rev. Dr. Gleeson, C.SS.R. A page-boy, Lewis Morris, announced the arrival of the debutantes, and with the flower girls, Denis Watson and Robin Sutherland, preceded Mrs. Enright down the hall. Sad news about Rod. A great guy with a wicked sense of humour.
I remember when we first got the new leather front draw holsters and cuffs pouch on the wide belts. Rod was doing Rosters at the time and proudly strapped the new leather around his waist and proceeded to walk the halls of Manly Police Station with his cigs and lighter in the handcuff pouch and a banana in the holster.
Loved working with him.
He will be sadly missed.

WOMBAT
Weeks of careful preparation by the Young Anglicans of Wombat and Kingsvale culminated in the Y.A. Ball, held at Wombat on Friday night, when a record crowd attended from all parts of the district. Buses arrived from Young, Harden, Cootamundra and Wallendbeen, besides numerous cars, and it was soon evident that comfortable dancing would be impossible. Two car loads of patrons arrived later, and, on seeing the crowded conditions, decided to save their feet and return home immediately. The dancers already in the hall made the best of it and took all the inevitable pushes and bumps in good part, with just one object in view and that was to enjoy themselves as well as conditions would permit. The door-keepers, J. Hall and A. Lemon, and ticket sellers, Jas Hall and J. Warner, had a busy time, but evidently did a good job, for the door takings amounted to about £96.
The hall was tastefully decorated, being latticed with red and white, with balloons to soften the effect, while the stage was adorned with an archway of flowers. About 9.45 the official party, consisting of Rev. Guy Julian, Mrs. R. Hall, Rev. F. M. Hill and Mrs. B. Minehan, Mrs. Julian, and Mr. R. Hall, made their entry, and the ball was officially opened by Rev. Guy Julian, of Harden.
The five flower girls then proceeded up the hall along a lane that had been formed towards the stage to the strains of ” Rendezvous, ” played on the piano by Mrs. J. Hall, and Maureen Prothero presented a bouquet to Mrs. Julian.
Little Maureen wore a frock of blue marquisette.
Pam Winbank in a pink net frock came next, and was followed by Helen Molloy and Janet Prothero in their frocks of white net.
Then came Elizabeth Hall, in a frock of white crepe, followed by Marion Bailey in pink net.
The eleven debs, in white, with their partners, then made their way towards the stage where they were in turn presented by Mrs. R. Hall to Rev. Guy Julien.
The debs, and partners were as follows:
Betty Oldfield, partnered by Mr. Jos Gabriel, wore a frock of white flat crepe, full skirt, tight fitting waist, sweetheart neckline, mittens to match.
Marie Nicolls, partnered by Mr. Worner, frock of silk net and lace over taffeta, full skirt, with peplum and tight-fitting bodice, mittens to match.
Marion Nicolls, partnered by Mr. M. Oldfield, frock of silk net and lace over taffeta, full skirt, with peplum and tight fitting-bodice, mittens to match.
Jessie Gehrig, partnered by Mr. F. Eastlake, frock of lace and water wave taffeta, full skirt, sweetheart neckline and mittens to match.
Merle Turton, partnered by Mr. C. Scott, frock with lace top and full water-wave taffeta skirt, and mittens to match.
Dulcie Parkinson, partnered by Mr. M. Williams, frock of whit’ satin, very full skirt, square neckline, and mittens to match.
Betty Parkinson, partnered by Mr. E. Parkinson, frock of white satin trimmed with sequins, full mittens to match.
Kathleen Ellison, partnered by Mr. J. Munro, frock of white organdi over taffeta, full skirt, sweetheart neckline, and mittens to match.
Wilma Whybrow, partnered by Mr. R. Whybrow, frock. of Brussels net, three-tiered skirt, with lace applique, mittens to match.
Gwen Hewson, partnered by Mr. R. Andrews, frock of spotted marquisette over taffeta, with three-tiered skirt, sweetheart neckline, and mittens to match.
Clare Lemon, partnered by Mr. M.Whybrow, frock of embossed marquisette with three-tiered skirt effect, heart-shaped neckline, and mittens to match.
The debs, and their partners then completed one round of a special dance, comprising a waltz chain step to the strains of, ” When You Were Sweet Sixteen, ” and on completion of this, ” The Blue Danube Waltz ” was the signal for all hands to join in an old time waltz. The dancing then commenced in earnest, for which music was supplied by the ‘ Rhythm Rascals, ‘ of Harden, consisting of piano, trumpet, saxaphone, accordeon and drums.
The floor was controlled by Mr. Perce Fitzpatrick, who, as M.C., did a very creditable job, and saw that all the dancers’ requirements were adequately catered for.
Supper arrangements for almost 400 people had to be on a large scale, and in this connection a large marquee had been erected to substitute for a badly needed supper room.
The supper itself was excellent, and it was quite obvious that a great deal of extra work had been involved. While on this subject, it would be appropriate to devote a special word of praise to all those people who worked so untiringly in the preparation and serving of such a supper for so many, not forgetting the able workers who kept the water boiling and ready for its various uses.
Secretary Mrs. Minehan was certainly fortunate to have such a capable and willing committee.
At 2 p.m. it was decided to engage the orchestra for another hour, and so dancing was carried on till ‘ 3 a.m., when tired, but happy people wended their way homeward, satisfied that they’d seen the largest crowd at Wombat Hall since its erection, and still wondering where all the people came from.

This afternoon, in a quiet and deeply-felt ceremony at the Sydney Police Centre, another thirteen names were added, and the memories of another thirteen dedicated NSW Police Force employees were honoured, at the NSW Police Force Service Memorial:
It is with the deepest regret that I inform those Retired, Former, Serving Police and friends that James O’TOOLE succumbed to the ‘ Black Dog ‘ at the very young age of 23 whilst Serving with NSW Police Force.
May you Forever Rest In Peace mate and may your parents and brother know that you were respected and loved by those who Served alongside of you.

It is with a very heavy heart that Bankstown Basketball Association mourns the loss of referee James O’Toole.
James has long been part of the Bruins family, and has represented the Bruins as an exceptional referee, supervisor, and player. He is known for his cheeky smile, witty conversations, and extraordinary dedication and passion for the education, support and ongoing development of Bruins Junior referees.
Over James’s many years of basketball service, James was awarded numerous prestigious Steve Well’s Junior Referee of the Year Awards as recognition for his hard work to his craft. James represented Bankstown Bruins at both New South Wales State Championships and Senior Finals Weekends, his efforts also took him interstate as a referee for New South Wales at many Australian Junior Championships, at which he always did the association proud.
In more recent years James sought out a professional career as part of the New South Wales Police Force, however, always continued to find time to be part of and support the Bruins family.
We are honoured to have had such an exceptional gentleman as part of the Bruins Family and James’s legacy will continue to live on in the people who he inspired and worked so closely with.
As a tribute to James, we invite the entire Bruins community to wear a blue ribbon on their uniform to signify the amazing life that he lived.
Rest In Peace James, we will continue to honor you with Bruins Pride and Dignity.
Never did I expect to say a funeral was beautiful but yours certainly was, James.
You were so obviously loved and cared about by so many including our family.
