Peter Henry Lander formerly of Sydney Chambers and Ada Evans Chambers passed away unexpectedly on the 11th of December 2021.
Peter came to the Bar in 1991 and joined Sydney Chambers, following the closure of Sydney Chambers he joined Ada Evans Chambers.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday 21 December 2021 at 12 noon at the Woronora Cemetery, South Chapel, Sutherland. Members are invited to attend.

Witness ‘ saw man with his intestines hanging out ‘
SYDNEY: A neighbour who heard a racket outside her house looked out the window to see a man with his intestines hanging out, Glebe Local Court heard yesterday.
Nicky Marinos said the man and two other men, who had a shovel and a hammer, were fighting, and a woman appeared to be trying to separate them.
She was testifying at the committal hearing of Huu Quynh Nguyen, 36, his wife Nga Thi Nguyen, 25, and Hai Thi Nguyen, 34, charged with murdering Duc Minh Le on December 15, at Marrickville, in Sydney’s west.
Magistrate Derrick Hand was told the 34-year-old woman was the victim’s sister-in-law.
Ms Marinos said the man, with his intestines hanging out was standing and fighting, ” waving his arms about “.
Constable Natalie Agnew said she arrived at the Marrickville house about 11.15am, when she saw the victim lying on his back on the driveway, bleeding profusely from his stomach.
The male defendant was charged on December 15, but the women were not charged until December 30.
Constable Agnew said that, when Nga Thi Nguyen was told of the charge, she appeared confused and agitated and did not seem to understand why
she was arrested, saying, ” but I did not do anything “.
Police officers told the court they found a meat cleaver, a large garden hoe, a silver knife and a silver metal bar near the scene.
Sergeant Peter Lander said Hai Thi Nguyen told him that, prior to the victim’s death, she had reported other incidents to police.
However, he could find no record of the alleged incidents, he said.
He agreed she had told him the deceased was a violent man.
The committal hearing, against the women, who are on bail and the man, who is in custody, will continue today.

SYDNEY, Friday. – A police skin-diver carrying out routine exercises at Manly Reservoir yesterday left the water hurriedly after coming face to face with a five-foot long crocodile.
The discovery was made by Constable B. Parker while he was checking the reservoir with Constable T. Swift.
Constable Swift entered the water to check Constable Parker‘s claim and also encountered the crocodile. He too left the water without delay.
Sir Edward Hallstrom, President of the Taronga Park Trust, said the reptile was probably of the Johnstone River variety. These crocodiles had been known to attack men.
The Mayor of Manly, Alderman W. R. Nichols, has arranged for a party of police skin-divers, armed with spear guns, to hunt the crocodile tomorrow morning. He said several small crocodiles had been found in dams and watercourses.
Many pet shop owners who sell crocodiles have blamed owners for throwing their pets into dams and other fresh water reservoirs after the novelty of owning a crocodile had worn off.
SYDNEY: Two men charged with the attempted murder of two policemen had been arrested when they went to a police station to report a stolen car, Sydney’s Waverley court was told yesterday.
Before magistrate Mr Henry were Mr Brent Richard Peters, 23, salesman, of Dover Heights, and Mr Michael Richard Carragher, 30, unemployed, of Bondi. Both were charged with attempting to feloniously and maliciously murder Detectives Trevor James Swift and John Charles Nagle.
Mr Carragher faced an additional charge of harbouring Mr Peters, knowing him to have committed an offence.
The police prosecutor, Sergeant Jay Corr, told the court police had positioned themselves at Nielsen Park in the eastern suburbs after receiving information about a car in the area.
The man driving the car had been described as looking like a sumo wrestler with very short hair, he said.
It was believed certain drug deals were taking place in the area, he said.
Sergeant Corr said police had approached a car and called out, “Police. Stop the car.”
Detectives Swift, Nagle and Edwards had been standing in front of the car when he said Mr Peters had accelerated, forcing detectives Swift and Nagle to jump out of the way. Police had fired at the vehicle but it had continued to drive, in a zig-zag fashion.
Sergeant Corr said Mr Peters and Mr Carragher had been arrested at Waverley Police station at 12.10am when they had gone to report a stolen car.
Mr Gould, appearing for the accused, said his clients denied the allegations and had gone to the police station to report being shot at by unknown persons.
He said Mr Peters and Mr Carragher alleged the officers had not identified themselves at the park.
Opposing bail, Sergeant Corr said Mr Peters was on bail on another attempted murder charge and had been charged a number of times on criminal offences involving possession of firearms and on drug matters.
He said Mr Carragher was not known to have a record. He was a native of New Zealand and did not have ties in this country.
Mr Henry refused bail for Mr Peters and granted Mr Carragher $3,000 conditional bail. No formal pleas were entered.

Upon application to join the NSW Police Force, via the Police Cadet system, James was described as:
6′ 1/4″ tall, 11 stone 5 lb, Blue eyes, light brown hair, fair complexion, a native of Sydney NSW and was Single. He had not been previously employed.
He was married on the 8 March 1952 and was 6′ 1/2″ tall and weighed 12 stone 10 lb.
He held the Intermediate School Certificate. He held the Bronze Medallion in Life Saving.
On 24 August 1953 he passed his Constable 1/c examination.
He passed his qualifications to drive Police vehicles on 31 August 1954. General Duty Utilities & Light Trucks on 29 January 1964.
He passed his qualifications to Ride Police Motor cycles on 27 November 1945 whilst a Cadet. Appears to have started the Course on 11 November 1945.

Body in park — no identity
Police have appealed to Holroyd residents for any information that may lead to the identification of a man’s body found in Fairfield Park last week.
The body was found by police and is believed to have been in the park for between three to four weeks.
Police said the man may have come from the Holroyd area and may have been known to district residents.
Officer-in-charge of detectives at Fairfield, Detective Sergeant J. Loomes said police were unable to identify the man. ‘The body was in an advanced state of decomposition and therefore impossible to identify.
‘ The man was about five feet seven inches tall, weighed nine or ten stone and had a very good set of teeth. He was wearing multi coloured check shirt, grey trousers, green socks and brown shoes. ‘ He was either round shouldered or had a slight hump on his back. ‘ We have no idea of his age, but we are certain there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death. ‘ Any persons with information concerning the dead man are asked to contact Det. Sgt. Loomes or Det. W. Knight, at Fairfield police station.

Dangerous driving; £20 fine
The driver of a news paper delivery truck was fined £20 for dangerous driving, and another £5 for having inefficient brakes, when he was convicted of these charges in Gosford Court.
He was Gregory George Creamer, of Belmont, who drove a ‘Daily Mirror‘ delivery truck.
An offence of speeding was found proven, but Creamer was discharged. The plea in all cases was not guilty.
Constable James Edward Loomes ( 21 Division ) told the court he saw a truck being driven around a bend in the Pacific Highway, Lisarow, at speed and on the wrong side of the road. The constable, riding a police motor cycle outfit, had to swing the bike between two white guide posts to avoid a serious accident.
WRONG SIDE
The truck continued on the wrong side of the road, and missed the cycle by only two feet, said the constable. He had chased it, and had been unable to catch it for four miles, both vehicles travelling at a speed of 50 mph through Ourimbah.
Constable Edward Simmons, ( 21 Division ) gave similar evidence.
He said he had tried out the truck’s hydraulic brakes, and had to push the pedal to the floor several times before they would work.
Const. Cecil Cutler ( 21 Division ) said he saw the truck speeding through Ourimbah at an estimated speed of 45 mph.
DRIVER’S EVIDENCE
Creamer said he was travelling at about 35 mph with ‘Daily Mirror’ newspapers when, as he started to cut the corner, he saw the motor cycle from 100 to 150ft ahead. He had put his foot on the accelerator and pulled over to his left, so he came on to the correct side of the road.
The motor cycle had plenty of room to stay on the bitumin, said Creamer.
He had not known he was being followed until he saw police on a motor cycle, in his rear vision mirror.
He had then stopped.
The police had said to him, ” you —- , you nearly killed us.”
His brakes had been in good order, said Creamer. He had said in a statement to the ‘Daily Mirror’ office that Const. Loomes had punched him in the stomach.
VERY ANGRY
Const. Loomes had been very angry, and might not have been able to avoid punching him, however. The constable had no justification for being angry.
Oswald William Dewes, of Valentine, said he checked the truck’s brakes two days before the incident, and the day after. The brakes had been in good working order, but Dewes had heard of hydraulic brakes failing, and being effective the next day.
Mr. C. W. English, SM, said Creamer, driving on the wrong side of the road, caused the motor-cycle to deviate off the bitumin.
Creamer’s evidence had been very inconsistent, said the magistrate. ( Sgt. W. H. Taylor for the prosecution, and Mr. A. D. Hickey for Creamer. )

There was a poignant scene in the old stone courthouse at Katoomba on Wednesday, when a detective handed the District Coroner ( Mr. P. O. Medlicott ) a photograph of the body of a six-weeks-old baby boy, described by doctors as shrivelled, wasted, and a victim of malnutrition.
Turning to the baby’s parents, who had been charged with manslaughter, Sgt. A. Waining ( assisting the Coroner ) said: ‘I don’t suppose you want to see it. You are entitled to see it, if you want to.’
The baby’s father, 26 years-old railway fettler, Leslie Williams, studied the photo impassively, but his 35 years-old de facto wife, Mrs. Peggy Winifred Lillian Poile, whose long hair flowed over her shoulders, turned away, hid her tear-stained face in the arms of a police woman, and sobbed convulsively.
The story told to the coroner began two years ago, when Mrs. Poile, having left her legal husband, went to live with Williams.
On April 19 last the couple, giving the name of Mr. and Mrs. Williams, called at the home of Mrs. Gwenllian Cousins, in Walgett St., Katoomba, seeking accommodation. ‘They had no money,’ said Mrs. Cousins.
‘Williams said he would pay me three weeks’ rent when he received his pay from the railways, which he did.
‘Mrs. Williams looked very ill, and was obviously expecting a baby, so I let them have No. 2 flat. ‘She didn’t make any preparations at all for the arrival of the child or children. People gave her things. ‘The flat was never tidy. I told her she should clean it up.’
On May 15, Mrs. Cousins drove Mrs. Williams — as most of the witnesses called her — to the Blue Mountains District Hospital.
‘Grey-Looking’
Sister Edith Mary Jones, of the hospital’s obstetric ward, told the coroner that Mrs. Williams first gave birth to a girl weighing 41b 4.5 oz., and 15 minutes later, to a boy weighing 41b 4.5 oz.
Mrs. Williams took her babies, Gary Lawrence and Lesley Gail, back to her flat on May 29.
On Tuesday, June 23, Mrs. Cousins noticed that Gary was ‘a bit grey looking,’ and told Mrs. Williams she should take him to a doctor at once.
About 5.30 that afternoon, Mrs. Williams asked a neighbor, Beryl Fay Martin, also known as Mrs. Andrews, to mind the children while she went to meet her husband.
The babies’ parents returned home shortly after 9 p.m. ‘They had both had quite a few drinks,’ said Mrs. Andrews. ‘I think you could say they were drunk.
‘Mrs. Williams picked up the boy and started feeding him on the breast, and I think Mr. Williams went to pay the rent,’ she said.
The landlady, Mrs. Cousins, said that later that night she saw Mr. and Mrs. Williams in bed fully clothed.
‘Pretty full’
Next night, according to a statement, Williams allegedly made to police, he and the babies’ mother again went out and got ‘pretty full.’
About 5.45 next morning, Mrs. Williams hurried to Katoomba police station, carrying Gary, wrapped in what Const. Maurice John Tyler described as ‘a grubby shawl.’
The constable said Mrs. Williams told him: ‘When I woke up this morning, the baby was cold and grey. I tried to get a taxi to go to the hospital.’
The constable took Mrs. Williams to the hospital. Sister Ruby Helen Wilson said that when the child arrived at the hospital, it was dressed in grubby clothes and wrapped in a dirty shawl.
‘I examined the child and found it was very cold, blue, dirty and obviously under-nourished,’ said Sister Wilson.
‘I contacted the matron, placed the baby in an oxygen tent and packed it with hot water bottles.’
Dr. Alfred Kenneth Jones, relieving Government Medical Officer at Katoomba, said he examined Gary at 11 o’clock the same morning. ‘He was obviously very sick, and deeply cyanosed — that means blue,’ said the doctor. ‘He was very wasted, consistent with a state of malnutrition.
In my opinion, medical attention should have been sought for the child considerably earlier.
‘Wastage would have occurred over perhaps two to three weeks, and I think should have been obvious to any person having care of the child.’
Gary Williams died about 4 a.m. next day, June 26.
Seven hours later, Dr. Jones said, he performed a post-mortem examination. The baby was very emaciated, and there was almost complete absence of sub-cutaneous fat.
‘Shrivelled up’
The small Intestine was completely collapsed, due to the absence of food. ‘It would seem that the persons who had charge of the baby had not given it sufficient to eat,’ the doctor said. ‘In my opinion, the cause of death was malnutrition, with terminal pneumonia.’
Dr Philip Hudson Macindoe, of Wentworth Falls, who also examined the baby, while it was in the oxygen tent, said it was ‘wasted, underweight, and shrivelled up,’ and apparently suffering from malnutrition.
Dr. Alfred Alcorn, of Echo Point, said that at 4 p.m. on June 26, at the request of Det. Sgt. Fisher he examined Mrs. Williams’ baby daughter, Lesley. She was thin, and in his opinion was also suffering from malnutrition. Her condition was now ‘quite improved.’
William James Irons, district officer of the Child Welfare Department, said he accompanied police in an inspection of the Williams’ flat on June 25.
‘Did the best’
The premises were filthy, and unfit for children he said.
Det.-Sgt. John Thomas Fisher ( NSWPF # ???? ), of Katoomba, said he had told Williams: ‘It’s alleged the baby was green yesterday morning, when Mrs. Cousins saw it.’ Williams replied that he had a hangover, and added: ‘I was that crook I didn’t feel like worrying about it. I sat in the backyard in the sun,’ said Fisher.
Williams told the coroner he did not wish to give evidence at the inquest. Mrs. Poile, however, elected to enter the witness box.
Her evidence consisted of two sentences, spoken between tears. ‘I just want to say I did the best for the baby.’ she sobbed. ‘Honest, I didn’t realise he was so ill.’
The coroner found that Gary Williams died from pneumonia, following malnutrition, which was the result of lack of care by its parents, and that the parents feloniously slew the child.
He committed Williams and Mrs. Poile for trial at Parramatta Quarter Sessions, and allowed each £100 bail.

Death of Constable Carpenter.
The death of Constable William Carpenter, who was in charge of the Moss Vale police station from August 10, 1891, to May 25, 1894, and was then transferred to Parramatta, took place at the latter town on Saturday last after a long illness.
After recovering from a severe attack of pneumonia he was retired as unfit for further service.
A few weeks later he was again taken ill with an affection of the heart and from that attack never recovered.
He had been in the service about 30 years and was a most efficient officer and highly respected by all who knew him.
He was twice married, his first wife and their child predeceasing him nearly twelve years, their remains being laid to rest at Bowral.
He married again, and leaves a wife and eight-year-old son to mourn their loss.
He was a brother-in-law to Mr. H. Jervis, Moss Vale.
Deceased’s remains were interred in the Church of England cemetery at Rookwood on Monday last.

DEATH OF CONSTABLE CARPENTER
Constable Wm. Carpenter ( for really he died in harness, though the authorities regarded the matter, technically, in a different light ) passed away on Saturday evening.
A few weeks ago he appeared to make a rally from the effects of his serious attack of illness ; but matters took a fatal turn a few days later, and then the end came, somewhat suddenly.
The funeral, which was largely attended, took place on Monday afternoon, the Rev. H. F. L. Palmer reading the Burial Service at the graveside at the Necropolis, Rookwood, and Mr. Ralph Metcalfe having charge of the funeral arrangements.
The clergyman took the opportunity afforded by the presence of scores of men ( some of whom, by the nature of their occupations, have but limited opportunities of attending public worship regularly ) to say a few earnest and solemn words suited to the occasion, referring to the opportunities afforded during this life of doing some good and thus ” rising ( through Christ ) to the life eternal. ” Mr. Palmer referred in a few affectionately-toned words to the gentleness and patience and valour, in suffering, of the comrade there departed, whose career and character had won him such universal respect and esteem in all the districts in which he had lived in Australia. Among those present at the funeral were : Inspector Grugeon, Dr. Kearney, ex-Sub-Inspector Fowler, Senior-Sergeant Bennett, Sergeant Nies, Mr. T. R. Moxham, Messrs. C. E. Byrnes, A. Holmes, Alderman Telfer, Messrs. G. H. Mobbs, J. Ridal, W. Board, W. Moxham, West Harkins, Smith, Robertson, R. THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 7.
Before H. Connell, and J. H. Caird Js P. Petty Larceny.- Christina Linklater, who appeared before the court with an infant in her arms, with which she had been incarcerated since the previous night, was charged with stealing a saddle the property of one William Goodwin, who valued it at 5s.
Constable William Carpenter, being sworn, stated that he apprehended the prisoner between 11 and 12 o’clock on Wednesday night, and charged her with stealing a saddle ( produced ) from a horse’s back in Tory’s Yard.
She said she knew nothing about it ; he believed her to be under the influence of drink at the time ; he took her to the lock-up with her baby in her arms ; he believed she had five children at home with no one to look after them. Prisoner elected to be dealt with summarily, and was ordered to be imprisoned in the Kiama lock-up for 24 hours.
