Death of a Police Officer.
A CRIMEAN VETERAN.
WEST MAITLAND, Tuesday.— Sergeant Josiah Vizzard, aged 62 years, died at Morpeth yesterday after a brief illness.
The deceased, after having served 30 years in the N.S.W. police force, retired recently on a pension.
The sergeant served in the Crimean War, and fought in the battles of Alma, lnkerman, and Sebastopol, with the Grenadier Guards, for which he received medals.
He afterwards went to Canada as instructor to the military for a number of years.
He was stationed at Wagga Wagga, Copeland, Lambton, and latterly he has been at Mulburing, in this district.
Death of a Crimean Veteran. — Sergeant Josiah P. Vizzard, late of Mulbring, died at Morpeth on Monday, after a brief illness, of pneumonia.
He leaves a wife and five children ( four sons and one daughter ), all grown up.
The death is surrounded with painful associations, for Sergeant Vizzard, after serving over thirty years in the service of the colony, only retired on a well-deserved pension at the beginning of April last.
Lately he proceeded to Morpeth, and purchased a house with the object of spending the declining days of his life in a peaceful manner.
He was in Morpeth making arrangements about the removal of his family when his death occurred.
He was sixty-two years of age.
Sergeant Vizzard had the distinction of having served in the Imperial army through the Crimean War.
In the ranks of the Grenadier Guards he was present at the engagements of Alma and Inkerman, and at the siege of Sebastapol, and he held the Crimea and Turkish medals.
He was afterwards sent to Canada as instructor to the military.
When he joined the New South Wales police force he acted as sergeant instructor at the depot for some time, under Captain Clancy.
He was afterwards in charge of various stations. In each of the places in which he was stationed, Sergeant Vizzard was greatly respected, especially among the better class of the community.
Having served in the hospital army corps he was possessed of considerable surgical and medical knowledge, and this proved of great value in the small country towns to which he was appointed.
His death, so soon after retirement on a pension, throws upon it a certain element of sadness, apart from other considerations.
It is somewhat remarkable that since July there have been no less than nine deaths among pensioners from the police force.

The partnership was dissolved on 1 March 1914 & Tom Jenkins relocated his business to Parker St in December 1917 and in 1930 obtained the G.M.H. ( General Motors Holden ) Dealership.
Tom Jenkins married Eileen Mary Gatehouse on 17 August 1916 and had six children, Fred, Thelma ( died at 6 months, Kathleen, Sheila, William & Robert.
Thomas & Eileen “possibly” lived in Cootamundra in January 1923.
James Gatehouse was “possibly” the father of Mrs Jenkins of Cootamundra at that time.

John was working at the Police Recruitment Office, Police HQ in 1954 when his brother, Don Avery ( NSWPF # 7893 ), applied to join the NSWPF.
After transferring to, and working from, Bega Police Station, John left the employ of NSWPF ( Resigned / Retired ? ) and then became an Insurance Broker in late 1970s, or possibly early 1980s and later moved to Griffith, NSW.
Survived by his wife Noreen, and children Christoper, Alison, and Joanne, 5 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.
Noreen subsequently died in Griffith in June 2018.
Her memorial service was 13 June 2018 at Griffith Ex Servicemans Club following private cremation.

Welcomed into the world on 22nd January, 1936, in Chatswood,
NSW, John Edward Avery was the youngest child born to Francis
Daniel and May Columbia Avery (nee Barnes). There was Joan,
Edna, Don, Frank and John and John is now survived by his brother,
Don. Their father’s occupation was given as a “coal
lumper”…….

John has had heart problems for many years. At the age of forty-
seven, he underwent quintuple by-pass surgery and then thirty years
later had a triple by-pass operation. John was one of those people
very attuned to his physical health and he managed his health
problems very well. His outlook was always positive, modest, stoical
and he never told anyone of any problems he had or suffered with.
Towards midday, on Tuesday, nine days ago, John realised that he
had a problem and so he called the ambulance to take him to the
Gosford District Hospital. Sadly, in spite of the best efforts of the
medicos, he was not able to recover and it was there at Gosford, John
Edward Avery, aged seventy-nine years, very suddenly and un-
expectedly departed this life on Wednesday, 18th March, 2015.
He will be very sadly missed by all those who knew and loved him. It
is a great debt we owe to men like John Avery for he was a man who
volunteered and was prepared to sacrifice his life in the military
services of this country. John also good and faithfully served the
citizens of NSW in the NSW Police Force for a period of sixteen years.
John was also one of those people who managed other people very well, for he was very, very organised with everybody and that included his family. It is his family who declare that John liked to do things his way.
Having said that though, John liked people, appreciated them and he was always quick to acknowledge those who had achieved something positive or good or performed admirably.
Those sorts of attributes are absolutely necessary to anyone with John’s aptitude for volunteering to do things for his fellow-man and society.
As an ex-president of two country Lions’ Clubs, a Life Member of the Sydney Adventist Hospital, a former Probus Club member, as well as being the current president of Terrigal Senior Citizens Association, John was always volunteering for something.
He was one of those people who was always busy, he could not sit still nor stop his mind from working, generally for the betterment of others.
John thought quietly and acted frankly, without fear or favour and, his penchant for organisation helped him to achieve what he wanted and better outcomes for the various organisations he supported. I am told that paperwork has been instituted more than twelve months ago, of which John was completely unaware, seeking to invest him with an Order of Australia Medal for his services to the community.
There is a saying, “we should build bridges, not barricades, stepping stones, not stumbling blocks.” John really did that and he didn’t do it in a serious or grim manner either.
He was known for his jokes or story-telling ability and John liked to laugh.
John also enjoyed travelling and, throughout his life, has been just about everywhere on this planet. More recently, he had discovered ocean cruising and had only returned from one such adventure, a couple of days before his passing. Above all else, the love of John’s life was his wife Noreen and he was a beloved husband of fifty-seven years, a much-loved and proud father of three, an adored and proud grandfather of five and great- grandfather of two, as well as a loved brother and a good friend.
His work here is now done.
May he rest in peace.

A torch aloft. A flickering flame. A solitary runner. For an Olympic movement that has done its level best to dishonour its own stature, what does it say about such an event where three simple symbols can convey as much meaning and emotion as a gold medal?
Since its successful candidature, nearly seven years ago, the 2000 Olympics have been Sydney’s Games. The lighting of the flame in Olympia, Greece, on May 12 will be the single act which converts the Games into a truly national event and celebration of nationhood. Sydney’s Games will, hopefully, become Australia’s Games.
It will be a chance for Sydney, a city that in recent years had become somewhat self-obsessed to the exclusion of the other 15 million Australians – remember them? – to reach out to the rest of the nation.
It will be a rare opportunity, too, for the city to engage with the country and vice-a-versa.
So the torch relay is one of those unique sporting events that manage to surpass sport itself. But, above all, it will be a chance for ordinary Australians to prove how extraordinary they can be.
Nearly four years ago, ordinary Americans took part in the torch relay as it passed through the United States on its way to Atlanta.
The expressions on their faces were a contrast to some of the gold-medal-winning athletes, whose faces were often a portrait of arrogance and domination, especially on the running track where the Olympics go onto what is near enough to a war-footing.
Once participation was enough. Now winning is all. Even the IOC’s elaborate advertising campaign refers to the belief that you don’t win silver, you lose gold.
But the torch relay may be a vestige of the more traditional values of the Games in which participation was paramount.
There is an honesty about the relay that seems to have been lost from the broader event.
Now it’s the turn of Australians like Mr Gordon George Avery, of Bulli, named today as a 2000 torch-bearer. Mr Avery, who turns 75 on February 11, won silver at the 1948 London Olympics in the triple jump.
His thoughts typify the spirit of the relay and the old values of the Games: “The Olympic torch for me is the symbol of the Olympic Games. If you have ever been an Olympian and competed against all these people from other nations you can understand why an Olympian feels like he does.
“We feel like we understand the rest of the world, because we’ve lived and competed on a level playing field with all nations. Often they’re our very best friends without a thought of race, colour or creed.”
John Konrads, an extraordinary Australian whom no ordinary Australian could begrudge carrying the torch, agrees. “The torch is one of the very important elements … it brings the Olympics back to its origins in ancient Greece and relays that heritage to the current Olympic city,” said the 57-year-old who won gold in the 1500m freestyle at the 1960 Rome Games.
“It brings back very fond memories of other Olympic ceremonies I have attended. I will be very proud when I am running with the torch, which will be a permanent souvenir to keep as a family heirloom.”
The organisers like to describe the torch relay as the real start of the Games, but they’re saying so with a degree of desperation now.
The start of the relay can’t come a moment too soon for the IOC and SOCOG, eager to galvanise a jaundiced world and host nation in support of the Olympics.
Even a cynic studying the torch relay’s route around the continent would have to concede that it is brilliantly conceived. It’s a retirees’ blueprint for the ultimate round-Australia trip.
Keep the map. A few of us may choose to use it one day – Mount Isa to Mount Kosciuszko, Broome to Byron Bay, Darwin to Dubbo.
The torch relay is one of the few creations of Nazi Germany that the civilised world has not rejected. Not even the residue of hatred and bitterness from a world war was sufficient for London to abandon the relay at the 1948 Olympics.

Attended Chatswood Primary School and Crows Nest High School, joining School Cadet Corps.
Left school at 15, worked as a cane cutter, painter/carpenter and followed his Father to work on the waterfront, loading and unloading ships.
He applied to join NSW Police as a cadet but was told he was too thin and to go away and bulk up a bit, eating bananas.
His younger brother, John Edward Avery, also a serving NSWPF member, was working at Police Recruitment and Don was appointed as Probationary Constable on 6 December 1954 aged 23.

Most notably, Don received the Commissioner’s Commendation for Courage, in 1979, following rescuing 2 people from a burning hostel in Manly.

Don lived in Chatswood, Avalon, Dee Why, Avalon, Kariong, Proserpine and finally Surfers Paradise.
He was medically discharged from NSWPF on 12 July 1985.
His health was adversely affected by the work on the docks and later the burning building where he suffered smoke inhalation.
Don died on 28 September 2020 at Hopewell Hospice, Arundel on the Gold Coast, Qld from congestive heart failure exacerbated by long-term asbestosis.
His wife, Margot, passed away in Proserpine in 2003, and younger brother John died in 2015.
Don is survived by his son, Scott Avery whose wife, Fiona Izon was also a serving member on the Northern Beaches 1999-2002; and his daughter Debra Stephens, who cared for Don in the last years, supported by her husband, Justin Lindon.
Don had 3 grandchildren, Christopher, Sophie and Jordon, and 3 great-grandchildren, Porshia, Halliana and Tyson, with a 4th expected.

On Thursday 24th September we said our farewell to the love of my life, my husband David – Dave, Jocho, loving father to Lauren and Yvette, with our immediate family and friends.
Unfortunately, due to Covid restrictions we could only have 50 people attend David’s service.
Our family and I would like to thank you all for the most beautiful and respectful messages we have received. We are overwhelmed by the love and support hundreds of friends and work colleagues have shown David and our family.
David had been very ill for many years. The early signs that David was unwell commenced in 2012 and in August 2015, David was diagnosed with Early Onset Frontal Temporal Dementia.
David’s health deteriorated where he was losing his motor skills, unable to see properly and kept having numerous falls.
Among many other symptoms, his ability to speak, eat, swallow and to walk deteriorated.
David had 167 consultations and follow up consultations over a 3 year period.
I took him to many different medical specialists and he also attended the Frontier Brain and Mind Centre, University of Sydney in order to properly diagnose him.
David had the most tenacious neurologist on the Gold Coast, Dr Arman Sabet who completed his studies in the U.S.
Dr Sabet kept stating David has a more specific disease because David was still very cognitive and still had an amazing long term memory which he did up until he passed. He did have difficulty with his short term memory. He knew what he wanted to say but his brain wouldn’t allow his thoughts to be transmitted through his speech.
After many tests and bloods sent overseas by Dr Sabet, David was fully diagnosed with PSP, Progressive Supranuclear Palsy which is somewhat similar to MND Motor Neuron Disease. PSP is also like a Parkinsonian disease.
David suffered a horrible and cruel 5 years and on the 17th September, David passed into God’s eternal care. No more torment. No more pain.
I know that you will all miss David as much as we miss him. We all have wonderful and funny stories to tell but that would take forever and I’m sure you will all share those stories and memories.
You all know David was a good, loyal, caring man, always had everyone’s back and you all hold him dearly to your hearts. Our lives will never be the same again.
There are too many people for our family to thank individually. We thank you all very much.
The last thing I would like to say is: If anyone becomes ill from Dementia, PSP, MND, Cancer or whatever terminal disease, please don’t be frightened to keep in contact or visit that person as that person is still the same person you all knew and loved.
That person also remembers you all and also loves you.
Keep safe and healthy our very dear friends, previous work colleagues and families.

You were one funny bugger that I loved working with and associating with over the years.
Although we had not seen each other for several years, we tried to catch up last time I was in Victoria.
No matter how long it was between conversations, we always started up from where we left off the last time we spoke.
We always had each others back and it was a bloody pleasure of mine to work with a bloke such as yourself. I loved the ethics and banter between us.
Rest In Eternal Peace my friend – until we meet again.
My family and I regret to inform everyone that my beloved father, Hasan Ataman Atlas, ( Adam Atlas) has passed away this afternoon ( Monday 14 September 2020 ).
Thank you to everyone who has showed their support these past few weeks. It has been a massive struggle for the entire family.
All I can say is, my brother and I were by his side the entire time. Everyone can be at ease knowing he passed away peacefully.
Our father’s funeral will be held tomorrow.
Unfortunately due to COVID-19, we are unable to have people attend his funeral. However, we will live stream on Facebook for those who would wish to be there virtually.
It will be a little bit after the Islamic afternoon prayer ( Dhuhr ) which is at 12.15pm ( Melbourne time ). I will update again tomorrow.

INSCRIPTION: MEDAL PINNED ON HERO Daily Mirror, Tuesday June 3, 1958 page 19 Her of the Spittiri shootings last year, DetSgt Kenneth Frederick GILMOUR, received the British Empire Medal for his bravery from the State Governor ( Sir Eric Woodward ) at Government House today. On May 24, 1957, Et. Sgt Gilmour went to a house in Darlinghurst where Spittiri had killed a man, shotgun blasted a woman and attempted to fire the premises. DetSgt Gilmour saw the man at the top of a narrow flight of stairs with a shotgun, yet he climbed towards the man who then fired the gun at him. Gilmour suffered a shocking injury to his right arm. He is permanently disabled. Gunman Spittiri died from a bullet from Gilmour’s automatic. Two other policemen, Const’s Neville William BEALE ( # 6924 ) and Ronald Joseph TURNER ( # ???? – Not in the 1968 Stud Book ) were also decorated for bravery at the ceremony.

Kenneth FrederickGILMOUR, Detective Sergeant, Third Class, New South Wales Police Force.
A telephone message was received at the Darlinghurst Police Station that a man, armed with a shotgun, had killed another and seriously wounded a woman and then attempted to set fire to some premises.
Detective Sergeant Gilmour, accompanied by two other policemen, arrived at the premises shortly afterwards and went to the basement at the rear.
A steep and narrow stairway led to the ground floor where a person could be heard moving about.
Gilmour, who was armed with his Service weapon, ascended to near the top stair and leaned forward to look around a partition. He saw the man standing in a doorway across the hall pointing a shotgun at him.
Gilmour called out that he was a Policeman and directed him to drop the gun.
The man stepped towards him and in a position above and slightly to the left of the Detective Sergeant aimed his weapon directly at him.
Both discharged their weapons at the same time and the Detective Sergeant was seriously wounded in the right arm.
The gunman was fatally wounded.
Detective Sergeant Gilmour displayed out-standing courage in ascending the narrow and steep stairway, being fully aware that an armed and desperate man was awaiting his approach and that he would be fired upon when he would be at a considerable disadvantage.

The man sitting on the edge of the gutter, injured and bloodied, is Detective Constable 1st Class K F Gilmour from Darlinghurst Police Station, soon to be promoted to Detective Sergeant.
It was the morning of ‘cracker night‘, 24 May 1957 and Gilmour was later awarded the British Empire Medal in recognition of his bravery on that day.
A man named Charles Spiteri had shot two people, killing a man and wounding a woman.
Detective Constable Gilmour ‘went to the premises with other police; he climbed the stairs to the room in which Spiteri was sheltering and saw Spiteri standing in a doorway pointing a shotgun at him.
He called to Spiteri that he was a policeman and told him to drop the gun.
Spiteri then aimed his gun at Gilmour and fired, Gilmour firing simultaneously with his service pistol.
Gilmour was seriously wounded in the right arm and had to retire, and it was subsequently found that Spiteri had been killed by the bullet from Gilmour’s pistol’.
The NSW Police Department annual report for 1957 declared that ‘in going up the stairs to the room after Spiteri, knowing that he was armed and had already shot one person, Detective Sergeant Gilmour displayed courage of a very high order.’

Gilmour also received two other awards for bravery:

The injury to Gilmour’s arm resulted in a permanent disability.
The Queen has awarded the British Empire Medal to Detective Sergeant Kenneth’ Frederick Gilmour, hero of the gun battle between police and crazed migrant, Charles Spiteri, last May.
Gilmour‘s right arm was permanently disabled by one of Spiteri’s shots.
The Governor, . Lt.-Gen. Sir Eric Woodward, has been advised that the award was made for civil gallantry.
The citation stated that police were called to a residential in Burton Street, Darlinghurst, on May 24 last year.
Det. Gilmour, followed by two other police, ascended steps at the rear, of the building.
He saw Spiteri, armed with a shotgun, standing in the doorway, and both fired at once.
Spiteri was fatally wounded and Det. Gilmour‘s right arm was shattered.
August 1986: Former Liverpool Police Officer – Detective Chief Inspector D.W.(Bill) Newall, retires from the New South Wales Police Force, aged 60, after 35 years of dedicated service to the community of NSW.
During his Police career he received three Commendations – i) Highly commended for his courage and devotion to duty displayed at Darlinghurst in 1957, on the occasion of the wounding of Detective Constable 1/c. K. F. Gilmour by a well-known criminal.
Detective Gilmour was seriously wounded in the right arm, which caused him to retire. The offender had been killed by Detective Gilmour discharging his service pistol.
Earlier that day the offender had shot dead a male person and wounded a woman.

July 2011: Former Liverpool Police Officer – John (Jack) Ryder passed away aged 79. He had been retired for some years.
During his Police career in 1953, he was presented with a Queen’s Commendation by His Excellency the Governor of NSW on the 21.5.1954 for ‘Brave Conduct’ when grappling with an offender armed with a knife at Yennora in February, 1953.
In 1957, he was ‘Highly Commended’ for the courage and devotion to duty displayed at Darlinghurst in May,1957, on the occasion of the wounding of Detective Constable 1/c. K. F. Gilmour by an offender who had previously murdered John Brooks and wounded Ruby Brooks.
In 1959, he was commended for powers of observation and good policemanship displayed on four occasions between April, 1958 and January, 1959, including one occasion when he was off duty, in the detection of stolen motor vehicles, resulting in the arrest and subsequent conviction of the offenders concerned.

In 1966, he was commended for the role he played in the apprehension at Concord in January, 1966, of two notorious armed and desperate criminals, who had escaped from Pentridge Gaol Victoria, in December, 1965.
Both criminals were subsequently extradited to Victoria and charged with murder and escaping from lawful custody.
