Police are investigating after a fatal motorcycle crash in Fernbank this afternoon.

It is understood a motorcyclist, who was riding in a group, crashed into a tree on Bairnsdale-Dargo Road about 2.25pm.

The motorcyclist, a 56-year-old woman from Elderslie (NSW), died at the scene.

The exact cause of the crash is yet to be determined and investigations remain ongoing.

I was so shocked and saddened to hear of Peter’s passing.

Spraddy was a giant of a man in every respect. In 35 years in the cops and as Peter’s Local Area Commander at Mudgee I had the honour of meeting and working with one of the best Cops you would find anywhere in the world. A very special and funny man with a generous manner. A heart of gold who cared for so many people from so many walks of life.

A true role model of what a real copper should be. We need more Peter Spradbrows out on our streets. The world would be a better place.

To this very day I consider myself so fortunate to have been extended an invitation to Spraddy’s Shed for many a famous card night.

Where else would the LAC be invited to enjoy a night with the troops and be so well accepted. I was truly blessed to have had a taste of Spraddy’s famous rabbit rissoles. I have so many fond memories of Peter’s humour and sayings.

Rest in Peace old mate. You have served your community well.

Lea and family I know you have a lot of pain at the moment but you can be well and truly proud of Peter. A great bloke and a fair and honest cop.

OBITUARY

Mr. James Thomas McConville

The death occurred at the Narandera ( sic ) District Hospital on Tuesday last of Mr. James Thomas McConville, of Narandera, at the age of 70 years.

Mr McConville, who was a native of Gunning, joined the New South Wales railway service at an early age.

In the extensive retrenchments following the bank crash in 1893 Mr. McConville was one of those whose service were dispensed with.

He then joined the police force, and was stationed at various centres.

During his term in the force he displayed remarkable ability and tact, and was popular with all sections of the communities in which he resided.

While stationed at Stuart Town he resigned from the police force, and his departure from the district was marked by a popular farewell in which Mr McConville was made the recipient of a gold watch and chain, the chain being made from gold mined at Stuart Town.

He acquired the license of the Broadway Hotel, Junee, and remained there for a number of years. Later he took over the licence of an hotel at Boorowa, and resided in that town for several years.

Some years ago he came to Narandera, where he had since resided. He made many friends here, by whom he was held in high esteem. In his early days he was a noted amateur boxer, and gave promise of making a name for himself in this sphere. Other interests, however, claimed his attention, and he relinquished his activity in this direction. He was a keen follower of all types of sport, and derived a good deal of enjoyment from cricket, football, and other classes of sport.

Deceased is survived by two sons and four daughters. The sons are James ( RA.A.F., Sydney) and Charles (school teacher, Quirindi); while the daughters are Tot (Mrs. O. Belling, Sydney). Misses Bridget, Edna, and Norah (all of Sydney).

He is also survived by one brother, Mr. J. W. McConville of Narandera.

The funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon, when the remains were interred in the Church of England portion of the Narandera cemetery.

The bearers were Messrs. Charles and James McConville (sons), Thorpe McConville (nephew), and — Belling (grandson). The last mentioned has only recently returned from Port Moresby.

Messrs. Watkins Bros, had charge of the funeral arrangements.

GUNNING

OBITUARY Mr. Jim McConville

Word has been received at Gunning of the death of one of its old and respected old-time citizens in the person of Mr. Jim McConville, which occurred at a private hospital at Narrandera on August 11.

The late Mr. McConville was a native of Gunning and received his early education at the Public School.

He was in the Police Force for some time. He was stationed at Peak Hill and later became a hotel proprietor.

At the Gunning Show he was a conspicuous visitor, making new friends and renewing old-time friendships.

He was the third son of the late Mrs. Rodrom and step-brother of Messrs. Joe and George Rodram, late of Gunning, and first cousin to Mrs. James Lyell, of Gunning.

His old-time friends will regret to learn of Mr. McConville’s death, as he was a man of sterling qualities and held in high esteem.

He is survived by five daughters, Tor (Mrs. Belling), Bid, Leila (Mrs. Fraser), Norah and Edna, and two sons, Charles and Jim.

The interment took place at Narrandera.

Richard worked as a Police Cyclist in the Newcastle area until entering State politics as the Member for Charlestown in 1972.

He became the longest serving Member of the NSW Parliament before retiring.

His former wife is Anita FACE nee KRYCZKO – P/W 0160 who graduated in 1972 from Class 129.

Former long-standing Hunter Labor MP and state government minister Richard Face has died, aged 80.

Mr Face, whose full name was Jack Richard Face, died on Tuesday night after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease.

Mr Face advocating for improved parking at Charlestown in 2010.

The former police officer held the seat of Charlestown for 30 years, a period that is believed to be a record for any state or federal MP in the region.

He held the Gaming and Racing Portfolio in the Carr government between 1995 and his retirement in 2003.

Mr Face was also appointed to the role of Minister Assisting the Premier on Hunter Development, a portfolio that was later renamed Minister for the Hunter.

He was instrumental in the Hunter’s transformation over three decades.

This included the establishment of Glenrock State Recreational Reserve, playing a key role in the management of the Newcastle’s transition away from steel making and the establishment of the Hunter Beyond 2000 Committees.

He was also a vocal advocate for the construction of the West Charlestown bypass, the redevelopment of McDonald Jones Stadium and the establishment of the Windale Police Citizens Youth Club.

He was affectionately known as the ‘the father of the NSW Parliament’ when he retired in 2003.

“I have been given the honour to represent the people of Charlestown for 30 years tomorrow, having first been elected on the 18th November 1972,” Mr Face, who had four children and eight grandchildren, said on the eve of his retirement.

“During this time I have faced 10 elections and each time have been returned as the State Member for Charlestown and it has been a privilege to help and assist the citizens of this electorate.

“As for my record of achievement in my electorate it’s for others and history to say whether it has been one of success or not. However, of the things I have done or achieved in the electorate in the 30 years, it is declaration of the Glenrock State Recreation Area which has brought me the most satisfaction.”

Mr Face’s son Warwick said his father’s career was one of many highs and acknowledged challenges. This included being found guilty of misleading a preliminary hearing of ICAC in 2003.

“Our family is steadfastly proud that the ledger is very much in favour of the people of the great state of NSW, particularly the Hunter Region, and the electorate of Charlestown,” he said.

“Thank you Richard, Dad, Poppy, we all love you, time to Rest In Peace.”

Sonny and Lorena warmly invite friends and former colleagues to attend Steve’s Funeral Service to be held at Parkview Funeral Home, Ballina on Thursday, 27 July 2023 commencing at 11:00am.

Lorena we would be honoured to attend Steve’s farewell, as tragic as it is. Lots of love to you girlfriend and Sonny ❤️❤️

Such a shock. Had some fun times with Steve back in day in Griffith. This is such a huge loss. I hope Sonny takes solace in knowing his father was a genuine man who was lived by many. rip Steve. ❤️

I am lost for words. All I can say is my thoughts and prayers are with you at this time.
It was a shock to read about Steve’s passing.
He will watch over Sonny from the heavens.

Stephen was a fine Police Officer second to none. He had a good sense of humour and kept his colleagues alert. He will be sadly missed.

Our condolences to Lorena & her family, & the martin family, so sorry to hear about the passing of Steve he will always be remembered here in Yenda who played footy for the Yenda Football Club, a great man who always had a smile on his face, never forgotten in the Yenda Football Club Family, RIP Steve from Liz & Neil Darrington
