A tribute to a special friend Sergeant Bruce Magee

The generosity of ones wisdom, is a statement of kindness, never surpassed in the history of time. When one of patience and understanding, pauses to advise and direct young people, and point them in the right direction, its a true sign of humility and caring. Over the years this man has nurtured the careers of hundreds of young Police Officers, at the Goulburn Police Academy, and on behalf of these Police Officers, serving and retired, we say thank you for your interest, for your patience, and your guidance and your friendship and your knowledge; and for just being the man you are. Yes Bruce Magee, you have made a difference in the lives of many of these young Trainees at the Academy, always encouraging them daily to reach beyond their goals, and to strive to be respected, and to be a competent Police Officer, within your community. I thank you Sir, and salute you for your fine Service.

Ladies and Gents,

Its with heavy hearts that we advise of the passing of highly respected former WAPOL Senior Constable Garin Collins 11141, who sadly took his own life at Joondalup in Perth’s north earlier this week.

Our deepest and sincere condolences to Garin’s family, friends and to his life long blue brothers and sisters.

Lets not dwell on how he died, but rather how he lived…

JUFC to wear black armbands as mark of respect for former player Garin Collins

Joondalup United is saddened to hear news of the passing of former midfielder Garin Collins earlier this week.

Edinburgh native Collins was an integral part of the JUFC team which won the 2014 State League Division Two title without losing a game.

Garin COLLINS

Dubbed ‘The Invincibles’ for their achievement, the talented side conquered the Division at the first attempt following their promotion from the Amateur League, and Collins was the Coach’s Player of the Year.

“Garin was different class the year we went unbeaten in State League Division Two and he easily won our Coach’s Player of the Year,” said JUFC NPL Operations Manager Rudy Proctor, who was part of the first team coaching staff at the time.

“His quality on the ball and will to win were on another level; when he crossed that white line all that mattered to him was winning and he dragged his team mates along with him.

“He would run through a brick wall for his team mates and coaching staff to get three points.”

As well as JUFC, Collins played for a number of Perth clubs, including Floreat Athena, ECU Joondalup, Quinns and Cockburn City, during an excellent career at State League level.

“We are all gutted at JUFC, and we especially gutted for his young children and his family in both Scotland and Australia,” said Proctor.

“Our thoughts are also with his best mate and current JUFC player Ross Edwards, I have no idea how those close to him must be feeling but we are all thinking of them and will do what we can to make things easier in any way possible.

“Rest in peace, Garin, you will forever be a JUFC Invincible.”

JUFC’s NPL first team will wear black armbands as a tribute to Collins for this Saturday’s game against Bayswater City, and everyone at the club offers their condolences to his family and friends.

May he rest in peace.

RIP GARIN COLLINS
West Australian football is in shock following the sudden death of the likeable Scot Garin Collins.
The left-sided frontman first played for Sorrento in 1994 and over the years turned out for such clubs as ECU Joondalup, Bassendean Caledonian, Floreat Athena, Mandurah City, Wanneroo City, Joondalup United, Canning City and Quinns winning many awards along the journey.
He was an integral part of ‘The Invincibles’ when Joondalup United clinched the 2014 State League D2 championship without defeat – after shifting from the amateur ranks the season prior. Proof of his impact came in the form of the Coach’s Player of the Year award.
“His quality on the ball and will to win were on another level,” said Rudy Proctor, Joodalup’s NPL Operations Manager.

A Hibbees fan from Edinburgh, Garin passed away earlier this week – he had turned 38 last month.

JUFC’s NPL first team will wear black armbands against Bayswater City this Saturday.

The Western Australian football family offers its deepest sympathy to Garin’s family and friends.

If you need to talk for any reason, don’t hesitate to contact Lifeline on 13 11 14 or MensLine 1300 78 99 78.

The University of Western Australia

Feeling safe on campus

Thursday, 23 May 2013

‘Look out for the vest: we’ll do the rest’ could be the motto of the new contract security staff who are now patrolling the Crawley campus.

The University now employs security guards 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They wear blue vests with bands of red and white checks to ensure staff and students notice them and know they can ask them for help.

Garin Collins, a UWA staff duty officer and field supervisor, said there was a fine line between providing a presence and unnecessarily interrupting people as they work.

“But we want everybody to know we are here to help,” he said. “I think, at first, people weren’t approaching us because they thought we were parking inspectors!”

The contract staff constantly patrol the campus four at a time – in two pairs. They are part of a complete security upgrade being implemented by Bob Leaver.

Mr Leaver has been the Manager of Security for 18 months and is completing a new master plan for the University.

“It started with a lot of staff training, then we got the Wilsons Security contract guards on board,” he said. “We are in the process of creating improved response services and hoping to get an electric vehicle to make our night time escort service quicker and more efficient and enhance response capabilities to incidents and emergencies.”

The most visible change is that security guards are now also on duty during daylight hours.  There were only night shifts before the new regime.

“We’ll find that our incident statistics will increase,” Mr Leaver said. “But that doesn’t necessarily mean more crime on campus. It means we are detecting more incidents and dealing more efficiently with crime and problems.”

He said the guards recently made a citizen’s arrest of a man who was trying to break into a vending machine near the Maths building recently.

“The evening patrol noticed the locks had been tampered with and they assumed whoever had done that would come back. So we put on extra patrols the next day and the man came back with a drill to drill out the lock – and he was arrested.

“That could not have happened last year, without security staff working in daylight hours,” Mr Leaver said.

The contract staff provide the foot patrols; the UWA staff supervise and help them, and are available for emergencies.

Mr Collins said he thought students were slowly getting used to seeing the uniformed guards around the campus and even inside some areas such as libraries. “At first, it was like seeing police walking through your work area.  You ask: What’s happening?  Now they realise nothing’s happening, but I hope they are feeling safe.”

Mr Leaver said the new guards were high quality employees who had a focus on customer service, had good education and experience, and were able to deal with any incidents.

He said he anticipated that the new security plan would eventually include improved closed circuit television cameras, ‘Help’ points and lighting to make the campus even safer.

Pam, as she was known, stepped into the Academy in May 1985 and was eventually stationed as those locations nominated above.
About 1992 she was working at Liverpool Detectives where she met Clayton HEINZ # 15595 whom she eventually married.
Whilst Pam was stationed at Campbelltown, ( about 1993 ) she was involved in an ‘on duty’ MVA which resulted in injuries.
Those injuries resulted in Pam using Morphine to quell the pain and it was Morphine that she became addicted to.
Unfortunately Pam didn’t stop at the use of Morphine and ventured onto stronger and illegal drugs which saw her spiral from the lovely woman she once was to the depths that illegal drugs take a person.
Pam exited NSWPF on a full Pension due to her HOD injuries and moved, with Clay, to Mt Tamberine, Qld.
Despite the love and assistance offered by those around her, Pam could not see the wrong that she was doing due to the fog of drugs.
On Wednesday  3 September 2003, Pam was at home at Mt. Tamberine, Qld, when she had a fall.  Due to the manner in which she fell, she asphyxiated.
An Inquest was held and toxicology found that the only drugs which Pam had within her system – were the ones that were currently prescribed to her.
May Pam forever Rest In Peace.

Policeman mourned after fatal crash in Shepparton

A POLICEMAN has been killed on his way to work in a tragic car crash in Shepparton.

Acting Sergeant Gavin Sproule, 37, from Kialla, was driving to work when he collided with another car at the intersection of Verney Road and Nightingale Way just after 9pm on Saturday.

He was flown to hospital but died on arrival. The Shepparton-based officer is being mourned by loved ones.

Inspector Troy Hargadon paid tribute to Acting Sergeant Sproule.

“Gavin was a well respected and valued member,” Insp Hargadon said.

“He had recently spent a period of time carrying out duties as a supervisor and he was well on his way to achieving his goal of promotion.

“He was much loved and respected by all. He is remembered by his wife and children.

“Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this tragic time.

“It will have an impact on our local members who do a wonderful job and who have lost a colleague and a friend.

“Victoria Police will continue to support our members in these tough times.”

Friend Annette Newman wrote on Facebook: “Rest in Peace Gavin. You will be sorely missed by everyone that knew you.”

“You will be forever missed but never forgotten. Will always love ya mate you were one in a million! And I was very lucky to call you my friend,” read another post.

A Police Association spokesman said it would provide support to Act Sgt Sproule’s family and colleagues

“The Police Association is deeply saddened by the death of one of our members, who was killed while on his way to working night shift in Shepparton,” a spokesman said.

“We offer our deepest condolences to his family, and we have reached out to them, and to the member’s colleagues who attended the scene, to offer any assistance and support they require.

“A senior Police Association representative is in Shepparton today to help guide affected members through this tragic time.”

The female driver of the other car was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Investigators believe that a car travelling on Nightingale Way turned right onto Verney Road and collided with Act Sgt Sproule’s ute.

The vehicle flipped and came to a rest on its roof.

Off-duty police officer killed in Shepparton smash a ‘true legend’

A police officer killed in a car accident while on his way to work on Saturday night has been remembered as a “true legend”.

Acting Sergeant Gavin Sproule, a member of Shepparton Highway Patrol, was on his way to night shift when a car collided with his Toyota ute about 9pm.

The Kialla man, a father of two young children, was airlifted to Melbourne but died on arrival.

Shepparton Inspector Troy Hargadon paid tribute to his colleague on Monday afternoon.

“He was vibrant and well-respected member who is sadly missed,” he told reporters.

“[He] has been a local member for a number of years having worked in Shepparton and most recently in an acting in the role as a supervisor.”

Inspector Hargadon said a number of officers who had attended the scene on Saturday night were friends and colleagues of Mr Sproule.

“It is a significant event when people lose their lives on our roads and no doubt it always has an impact on the wider community,” he said.

“The complexity for us is that it is a colleague, and unfortunately, some of his peers and his friends, they responded to the horrible scene we were faced with on Saturday evening. They did so in such a manner that was outstanding and [I’m] certainly extremely proud of the efforts that they put in on that evening.”

Inspector Hargadon also praised the efforts of other emergency services and the greater community who provided the support on Saturday night at the scene of the crash.

He said officers who were traumatised by the incident were receiving ongoing care and counselling.

Mr Sproule, 37, has been remembered as a much-loved officer, with The Police Association said they were “deeply saddened” by the tragedy.

“We offer our deepest condolences to his family, and we have reached out to them, and to the member’s colleagues who attended the scene, to offer any assistance and support they require.

“A senior Police Association representative is in Shepparton today to help guide affected members through this tragic time.”

Tributes have poured in on social media for Mr Sproule, who was described as “a really great bloke” and “true legend” who would be sadly missed.

Investigators believe that a vehicle travelling on Nightingale Way turned right onto Verney Road and collided with Mr Sproule’s Toyota.

The female driver of the other vehicle was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries.

Gavin Sproule was a well respected police officer who started out in Horsham

TRIBUTES are flowing for Wimmera man Gavin Sproule.

Gavin, 37, died after a car crash at Shepparton on Saturday night.

He had worked as an acting sergeant for the Victoria Police, based in the Goulburn Valley, for about 10 years.

Gavin grew up at Pimpinio before his father Paul took the reins as the police officer at Minyip.

Older brother Brad Sproule said Gavin was like any little brother.

“He was very adventurous, very boisterous, full on, flat out. But then he also had a very soft side,” he said. “He was very caring and loving.”

Brad said Gavin took those traits into fatherhood and became an exceptional parent.

Gavin and wife Jayne have two sons, Max and Beau.

“He and Jayne were a really good couple. There are always highs and lows in relationships and they just got through everything. They worked together,” Brad said.

Brad said Gavin wanted to follow in their father’s footsteps as a police officer, but tried several jobs before he embarked on that journey.

“He was a farm hand and did a bit of truck driving, but he loved the police force,” he said.

Gavin started his policing career in Horsham and later worked in Shepparton.

“When he was younger he pushed a lot of boundaries but he ended up being a very respected and very good police officer,” Brad said.

“He loved the job and was good at it.”

Police officer’s life celebrated

by

February 24, 2018

Gavin SPROULE

The life of Shepparton police Acting Sergeant Gavin Sproule will be celebrated at a funeral service in Mooroopna on Monday.

Acting Sgt Sproule was killed when his car and another vehicle collided at the intersection of Verney Rd and Nightingale Way just after 9pm — on Saturday, February 17.

Earlier this week colleagues remembered Mr Sproule as a ‘‘vibrant and respected’’ man.

‘‘He’s a brother, he’s a father, he’s a husband, and he’s a valued member of our organisation,’’ Shepparton police Inspector Troy Hargadon said.

‘‘To lose a life at any circumstance is a tragic event, and it has a significant impact on anybody, whether it’s a member of the police force, or a community member.

‘‘I’d like to thank the community for their support. Please stick with us, we are here, we are dedicated to serving you. We will continue to do that day in, day out, regardless of the circumstances.’’

Insp Hargadon said traffic diversions would be in place on Monday with vehicles expected to be diverted on Echuca Rd, Mooroopna.

‘‘Respectfully, we ask the community to be mindful,’’ he said.

Hundreds of people are expected to attend the full police honours service including police horses, motorbikes, vehicles and a pipe band.

Acting Sgt Sproule had been stationed at Shepparton and Mooroopna, for a number of years, and also had connections to the Cobram and Wangaratta forces.

The funeral service will be held at the Sir Ian McLennan Community Centre on Monday, February 26 commencing at 1pm.

A private cremation will follow.

Sacked Police to get job back

The tribunal had ordered that John Gregory Donlan and Ward Andrew Hanson, who were off duty at the time of the attack, be reinstated but deprived of some seniority. It ruled they were capable of rendering valuable service in the future and should have the opportunity to continue in the police force.
……..appealed against the decision. Donlan and Hanson were convicted of assault and assault occasioning actual bodily harm in September 1990. Yesterday, the dissenting judge, Justice Powell, said the men were not jailed because the magistrate took into account the fact they would “suffer severely” as a result of being sacked.

Canberra Times (ACT : 1926 – 1995),

Thursday 15 December 1966, page 13

Man denies any threat to life of PM

Nedeljko Gajic will be retried on February 28 on a charge of having had a loaded sawn-off rifle with the intention of killing the Prime Minister. He has pleaded not guilty.

Gajic, who said in evidence he bought a gun and came to Canberra so the police would catch him and send him back to Yugoslavia, was remanded until that date by Mr Justice Joske in the Canberra Supreme Court last night after a jury had failed to reach agreement in the case.

Opening for the prosecution, the Chief Crown Prosecutor, Mr A. R. Watson, said the case and the circumstances were unusual, but the facts were straightforward.

Gajic had come to Australia about three years ago.

He worked in different parts of Australia and it was alleged that for various reasons late this year he formed the intention of “killing the head man of Australia” — the Prime Minister, Mr Holt.

It was alleged that Gajic bought a .22 calibre repeating rifle and ammunition in Sydney and cut the rifle down to form the weapon which would be produced in court.

Gajic came to Canberra on November 10, but on the way he read that Mr Holt was in Melbourne.

He went to Parliament House with the gun and ammunition in a brief case.

He did not see Mr Holt and waited outside Parliament House until November 16, when he gave up the project.

On that day, he hailed a taxi and asked the driver to take him to Queanbeyan. There he gave directions to be driven to a spot near Captains Flat turn-off, where he produced a gun and told the driver to stop.

Gajic alighted and disappeared in the bush.

He was next seen in Braidwood on November 19 by two members of the NSW Police Force, who arrested him. He still had the gun and some ammunition and a newspaper photo of Mr Holt.

Gajic was interviewed by detectives from Canberra and later extradited to the ACT.

The taxi driver, Battista Colussi, of Vasey Crescent. Campbell, said that after they left Queanbeyan, he saw Gajic holding a sawn-off gun in his left hand and pointing it across the car.

Gajic then asked him to drive towards Bungendore. After driving about three miles, Gajic asked him to stop.

When he stopped the car on the side of the road and turned around, Gajic said, ” I don’t want anything out of you, sorry “.

He said ” sorry ” a couple of times and then ordered him out of the car.

Colussi said that after getting out of the car, he walked across the road. At the same time, Gajic alighted and ran into the bush, saying ” Sorry, boss, sorry “.

Constable Raymond John Greentree, of Bungendore, said that on the afternoon of November 19, he was on duty with Constable Lionel John Morrish in Braidwood.

He saw Gajic in Wallace Street, Braidwood.

Questioned about the rifle, Gajic said a friend gave it to him in Sydney.

At the Braidwood Police Station Const Morrish took a wallet from inside Gajic‘s coat pocket. This wallet contained a newspaper photo of Mr Holt.

Corroborative evidence was given by Const Morrish.

” No intention to kill “

Detective Inspector Harold Franklin Luton said in evidence that there was nothing on Gajic to suggest that he was a known political fanatic.

Det Insp Luton, of the Canberra CIB, said that on November 23, with Detective Sergeant M. J. Robinson and an interpreter, Mr Kres Marinic, he saw Gajic at the Braidwood Police Station.

In the course of an interview, Gajic said he had come to Canberra with the intention of killing Mr Holt.

Cross-examined by Mr Gallop, Det Insp Luton said that before this case there was nothing about Gajic to give rise to any suggestion that he was a known political fanatic.

There had been some recent political activity in this area by Serbo-Croatians and people from Yugoslavia generally, and some incidents about a flag at Cooma.

Wanted to return

Gajic was not at any time asked specifically why he wanted to kill Mr Holt.

Evidence was given also by Det Sgt Robinson, Kres Marinic, of Endeavour Street, Red Hill and Detective Constable I. C. Broomby.

Gajic said in evidence that he did not have many friends in Australia. His brothers and sisters were in Yugoslavia and he used to write to them. He sent about $400 to his brothers.

He would rather go back to Yugoslavia, but did not have the fare.

Gajic said he decided to buy the gun seven days before coming to Canberra.

He decided to buy the gun and come to Canberra so the police would catch him and send him back to Yugoslavia.

He came to Canberra on November 10 and went to Parliament House, as he was interested in seeing what it looked like inside.

He knew the Prime Minister was not in Canberra.

Gajic said anybody could see him at Parliament House. He did not show the gun to anyone there but thought that if the police noticed him around the place for four or five days they would find out.

No policeman spoke to him, so at the end of six days he decided to return to Sydney to look for work.

He never intended killing the Prime Minister, who had not done anything to him.

He told the police he intended to kill the Prime Minister because he expected them to send him back to Yugoslavia.

Cross-examined by Mr Watson, Gajic said he cut the barrel off the gun so he could put it in his brief case. He came to Canberra with the gun so he could be caught by the police.

He agreed that there were police in Sydney, but he came to Canberra to make them really believe he came here to kill the Prime Minister, but he denied that he came here to kill Mr Holt.

‘Could not save fare’

Mr Watson: Before today had you ever told anyone that your reason for coming to Canberra was something other than to kill Mr Holt? Gajic: I told it to people who were with me in prison.

If you wanted to get back to Yugoslavia, why did you not save up for your fare?— I could not save any money. I spent the money on drink.

You sent S400 to your brothers? — Yes, but that was one year ago.

That would have paid your fare home? — Yes.

Umar Lillepruun, who was called by Gajic, said he was now in custody and knew Gajic, whom he had seen in the police cells.

On Friday last, Gajic told him he wanted the police to catch him and put him in gaol because he was hungry and had no money or work.

Gajic also told him that he had been accused of trying to kill the Prime Minister. He said there was no reason for this because if he wanted to kill the Prime Minister he would have gone to Melbourne and not come to Canberra.

Migrant psychosis

Dr A. J. Merrifield, specialist psychiatrist, gave evidence that Gajic was suffering from a “migrant psychosis”.

Dr Merrifield said he had examined Gajic three times (twice in one day) on behalf of the Crown.

Gajic told him he had never been in trouble with the police, had never had a fight and that he did not want to kill anyone except Mr Holt.

Gajic had also said it would be ridiculous for him to fight or kill all the Australians who had offended him, for this would mean he had to kill half the Australians and he did not want to kill so many people.

In the final interview, Gajic had said the whole thing was bad and that it; had all been wrong. He had said that to kill the Prime Minister because other Australians were bad to him was incorrect.

Gajic had spoken of his misfortune in being caught as he was and said he had given up his intention, was going back to Sydney to start again and that his cardinal mistake was in taking a taxi without having money to pay.

Dr Merrifield said Gajic was suffering from a migrant psychosis, which was a variant of schizophrenia, which was delineated from the more classical variety in the sense that the isolation of migration seemed to play a large part in it. One of the symptoms was a rejection of the host country and a desire to return to the mother country.

Gajic had been isolated in the community and had not found anyone to communicate with and had become increasingly withdrawn.

Dr Merrifield said that Gajic had said that from the time he came to Australia he had been treated badly by Australians who had called him bad names like “wog” and “bastard“. He said there was no particular reason for them saying such things.

Dr Merrifield said there was no suggestion that Gajic was hearing voices because he had asked him if he heard people saying these things when he was in bed and his answer was, ” What a silly question. I sleep by myself “.

It was believed people had called Gajic derogatory names and he had, from these, built up his resentment.

Without finding any relief for it, Gajic finally felt that expression was essential and hence the plan to shoot the Prime Minister.

Answering Mr Watson, Dr Merrifield said the condition of migrant psychosis was a major mental illness and not uncommon in the migrant population.

Paul is described as a nice bloke who was a quietly spoken gentleman.
He was a very thorough and meticulous Detective. A Registered Psychiatric Nurse before he joined. Always had a ciggie and cuppa in his hand when out the front of Newcastle Police Station with a brief in hand. Happily frequented the Grand Hotel Newcastle on many a Friday afternoon. A pleasure to work alongside and somehow always reminded us youngsters that we drove too fast! A real good cop who could tell a good yarn. He has many friends in the Newcastle area who, along with his family will miss him dearly.

You came into my life. We laughed. We cried. We loved. And then you left. You were not forgotten. Now you have left again, but you will not be forgotten. You gave me memories so that I will have flowers in springtime. Rest in peace my Dear Friend and Love. My Prayers, Blessings and Love goes with you.

I’m sorry to hear that Paul has left this world. I knew Paul well both during his nursing days and also for a time after he joined the police force. I found him to be a thorough gentleman with a beautiful soul. He had a special gift for being able to communicate with people of all types and this saw him do well in both professions. He also had a fabulous sense of humour and I shared many a funny time with him. He will be missed, but never forgotten. R.I.P Paul, and my sympathy and condolences are extended to your family and friends…Nadia Wane

Lifelong St George resident John William Baxter died peacefully in his sleep at his Rockdale home on Saturday morning aged 92.

‘Jack’ was well-known in the community for his love of golf and played at Kogarah Golf Club every week until he was no longer able.

He attended Hurstville Boys High School before enlisting in the Royal Australian Air Force at age 18.

Mr Baxter served in the RAF for two years achieving the rank of Leading Aircraftman (LAC).

He saw action in Borneo, where he was wounded by a gunshot to the leg and spent six months recovering in Jervis Bay.

Mr Baxter met his future-wife Valerie soon after and the pair were married January, 1957.

He served in the NSW Police Force for 35 years, retiring in 1981 after being injured in a serious car accident. The sergeant served at Regent Street, Philip Street, Darlinghurst and Maroubra commands.

Mr Baxter also played rugby union with St George Rugby Union Football Club (now known as Southern Districts), delivering a man of the match performance – his final appearance in the league –  in the club’s then only premiership victory, against Gordon.

The football highlights didn’t end there, with the forward captaining a NSW Police side against the New Zealand police team in a 1958 interdominion.

Mr Baxter was also known to play a friendly spot of tennis with local legend Ken Rosewall.

He also coached junior cricket at Arncliffe Cricket Club in the 1970s.

Mr Baxter was a voracious reader and his love of books was rivalled only by his joy in sharing a glass of wine with his wife.

The Baxters raised their children in the same Rockdale house they lived in for 53 years.

Mr Baxter is survived by two children, three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He will be farewelled in a funeral service at Rockdale Guardian Funerals (374 Princes Highway, Banksia) at 10.30am on Friday, February 9.
