VALE LAURIE ANDREWS – A MAGPIE GREAT

Received sad news on the weekend of the sudden death of former much loved Hay-ite Laurie Andrews.

Laurie passed away in Italy on September 1 while on holidays with his partner Annette and friends.

He had celebrated his 71st birthday just a few weeks before, and had been in good health up until his sudden death.

Laurie was a great mate to all who knew him. He was particularly close to his Rugby League mates with the Hay Magpies, and was a regular attendee of functions to do with the Magpies Club, especially involving the 1967 premiership team of which he was a prominent member.

Laurie travelled to Hay in October 2017 to attend the Magpies Presentation Night, and was a chief organsier of the 1967 Premiership Re-union held in Coffs Harbour late last year.

Laurie was an outstanding horseman, and represented Australian in TentPegging, He became involved in TentPegging while he was a member of the Mounted Police in Sydney.

The Australian State Mounted Police also adopted Tentpegging as a demonstration of their skill and horsemanship, participating in demonstrations and competitions at Royal Shows.

The sport got its first international recognition when the Olympic Council of Asia accepted Tentpegging as an official event in the 1982 New Delhi Asian Games. Since then countries have been hosting International Events. 1994 saw the establishment of a World Tentpegging Organization, “International Equestrian Tentpegging Association”. International events are becoming more frequent with growth of the sport in countries such as South Africa, Namibia, India, Pakistan, Israel, Great Britain, Netherlands, USA, Canada, and New Zealand.

Just reading through my ‘archives’ and came across this story I wrote about Laurie and George – two great mates – two brothers who gave 100% effort to the Hay Magpies Club during the mid-late sixties…

Players of the Past – George and Laurie Andrews

During the mid to late sixties a pair of brothers, George and Laurie Andrews from a strong Aussie Rules background made their way to Hay, and almost immediately became an integral part of the Hay Magpies.

They were employed by the late Jack Carver at Toogimbie Station, and soon linked up with Jack’s sons, Phillip and Ray.

Phil and Ray were both playing with the Magpies, and it wasn’t long before the Andrews brothers joined them in the ranks

Although they were Victorians they adapted to Rugby League like ducks to water.

Not only were they tough and un-comprising players, they were also good blokes.

Both George and Laurie have remained firm friends with all their team mates since the sixties and enjoy nothing better than catching up at reunions.

Since he sold his Water Truck in Tamworth and retired George has been a regular visitor to Hay, to catch up with his son (Laurie) daughter (Roslyn) and his grand children

On the field, George and Laurie were different style of players. George, was more a Blue Collar type player. A forward who loved mixing it with the tough players of his era in Group 17.

The game, in those heady days of the sixties, was much more physical, and not as ‘fitness orientated’ as it is now.

Training consisted of a game of touch, laps of the Oval, exercising, and ball handling. High shots, stiff arm tackling and rough house tactics were the order of the day. The ‘survival of the fittest‘.

The tougher the game the more George liked it.

Both the Andrews boys were involved in successive Grand Final appearances for Hay – 1966 and 1967

Laurie was a backline player with silky skills, and tough defence.

He was comfortable at home in the centres or or the wing, and was one of the first blokes picked each week.

Laurie left Hay to join the Mounted Police, and by the time he retired from the Police Force had risen to the position of Licencing Sergeant of the Tamworth District.

George and Laurie were blokes who played huge roles in the strong development of the Magpies Club, both as a successful organisation, and a Club to be respected on the paddock.

Both were players who gave 100% effort. Blokes who helped dig the well others are drinking from now.

Rest in Peace Laurie. You were a great mate and loved by all who knew you. Sincere condolences to Annette your extended family.

This expensive Gersen Therapy costs $6000 per week for 3 weeks. This does not include travel to Mexico or other living expenses. Her story is below. I am aiming to raise enough funds to help cover the cost for her and assist the financial burden.

“My name is Karina Schack. I’m 41 years old. I’ve been diagnosed with a terminal illness. In August 2008 at the age of 35, I found a lump in my breast which I thought little of.

As a close friend had recently been diagnosed with breast cancer, I decided to go to my GP to have her check it out. She was concerned enough to schedule a mammogram and ultrasound to investigate further. She reassured me that it was most likely nothing to worry about.

As it turned out, a cancerous tumour the size of a golf ball was growing underneath my pectoral muscle, right down to my chest wall. This was swiftly removed, however the cancer had unfortunately started to spread to the lymph nodes under my armpit. These nodes were removed and an aggressive course of chemotherapy started, followed by radiation. Following about six months of treatment, the cancer was gone. I could breath a sigh of relief. At least that’s what I believed up until about 6 weeks ago.

During my six year annual check up (involving a mammogram and ultrasound) I mentioned to my doctor that I was experiencing severe pain in my chest. It felt like bone pain. She ordered a bone scan to ensure nothing ‘sinister’ was going on. The results of the bone scan revealed metastasis (recurrence) of the original cancer in my sternum, spine and sacrum. Upon being informed of this, I asked the burning question. ‘Is there chance of being cured at this point?’ The answer, ‘No, typically not.’

Typically not.

As I was alone at the appointment, my first thought was of having to break this news to my loved ones. I was numb. Just wanted to wake up. I won’t even say my worst fears had come true, as I hadn’t even imagined this scenario. There were three doctors in the room with me, all looking at me with very sad eyes. All I could do was think how difficult it must be to break that news to someone.

I was meant to go on a holiday to Vietnam the following week. This was cancelled to make way for radiation to two of the most affected areas. It was early on in my treatment when I was told about a clinic in Mexico where they are getting some excellent results in the treatment of cancer patients. The clinic is called Gerson. I started to research the Gerson Therapy and found real logic in their approach to treating serious illness. The therapy is all about building the bodies’ immune system to a point where it will heal itself.

As my oncologist was not recommending immediate systemic treatment of my condition beyond the radiation therapy I had received, I decided to make application to attend the Gerson Institute. This application was recently accepted on a week by week basis, with the hope to stay for three weeks. This wholly depends on how I respond to treatment.

I departed for Gerson on 22 November 2014. Right now, it’s 11:23pm and I sit in my hotel room in San Diego, with a shuttle bus due to pick me up first thing in the morning to take me to Tijuana, Mexico. Let the Gerson adventure begin…”

Well, this update is well overdue. Firstly, I want to say a huge thank you to Kylie for organising this page for me. When I was diagnosed in October, I could not have predicted the kindness, love and support I’d receive from my work colleagues. Thanks Kylie. I owe you big time. And thanks to all the people from work that have supported me and continue to do so on a daily basis.

Next, I’d like to thank each and every one of the beautiful people that have donated their hard earned to fund my adventure to Mexico. I didn’t see the page until about a week in to my three week stay at Mexico and by that time, about $7000 had already been donated. To say I was overwhelmed by the generosity would be an understatement. I was truly floored. I cried like a baby (in a good way) when reading the comments of support, inspiration and positivity; including from complete strangers. I can guarantee that every single comment has been read and re-read by me when I find myself struggling or doubting my choice.

My trip to Mexico was made possible by you guys and I can emphatically say that this has changed my life for the better! The Gerson Therapy has changed my life forever. My regime is strict and will continue for at least a couple of years, likely longer. The three weeks in Mexico gave me the insight and knowledge required to maintain this lifestyle to the degree required to heal. For those of you interested in exactly what’s involved in the therapy, you can visit www.gerson.org. Suffice to say, it’s not snake oils or black magic, it’s the use of wholesome, organic and nutritious food, juices and supplements, as well as regular coffee enemas (or upside down coffee breaks) to enable the body to build its own defences to assist in healing.

THE RESULTS
My bloods improved a great deal while in Mexico. My white blood cells increased steadily throughout my stay and my ph levels after a week entered the very alkaline range and remain alkaline. Cancer doesn’t like an alkaline environment.

I had a CT scan last week of my organs. The previous scan in October revealed two lesions on my liver. I received the results of the scan yesterday…..cue drumroll….the lesions on the liver have more than halved in size and are now barely visible on the pictures. I can vouch for this as I had to squint to see them! The scan also reported on my bony lesions which appear to have improved slightly. There are no new lesions in either bone or organs….cue sigh of relief… These results are fantastic! The leadup to these tests were a little, shall I say…stressful?! I just wanted some validation that what I’m doing is worth it. Well, the results speak for themselves. It’s definitely worth it!

Besides the results on paper being positive, I also feel good. I feel strong and healthy. Ironically, I’m probably the healthiest I’ve been in years.

The money which has been raised not only helped to fund the trip to Mexico, but also helped buy a second fridge (required to store the large volume of organic produce I consume every week), as well as a water distiller. The supplements alone cost about $2000 every three months, so the money provided by you has been a godsend.

Once again, thanks to you all for your incredible support through what has been a difficult time. Without a doubt, I’m made stronger and more determined in my resolve with the assistance of you all; my family, friends and colleagues.

At the time of her passing, Susan was attached to Mt Ommaney Station but prior to that, she was a long-serving member of the Fortitude Valley Police family. It has been said that Susan’s smile could light up a room…

On Tuesday 21 August 2018, Susan tragically took her own life. It’s not for us to judge how or why Susan took this path, but it’s probably fair to say right at the end she felt alone.

Sadly, this could not have been further from the truth as attested by the outpouring of love demonstrated in the comments subsequent to our earlier post, but in these situations (and there have been just too many), feelings of being alone, forsaken, isolated, forlorn and abandoned are all too common.

It is incumbent on each and every one of us to do everything in our power to ensure that our friends, our colleagues, OUR blue family members are not left to feel this way. It is up to us to take some time out of our own busy schedules to check on our mates and if required, firmly and unequivocally intervene.

It’s heartbreaking to think that in 2018, in an ever shrinking world being as connected as it ever was, that a feeling of being ‘alone’ can yield such catastrophic results time and time again.

In the meantime, we stand shoulder to shoulder with our Police brethren in their grief. In time we will celebrate how Susan lived rather than how she died.

With all due respect. I knew George as a police prosecutor at Bankstown.
I also did a prang when he was off duty, riding his motorcycle home. He got injured when a driver failed to give way. Later that driver pleaded not guilty. Another top prosecutor Bob King ever alert noticed that the driver sat awkwardly in the witness box. It was revealed that he the driver was blind in his right eye. George was granted money in third party claim and set up his own hire car business.

He was a tough but fair prosecutor & woe betide the unprepared Constable at a hearing. My wife & Barb later met through a TAFE course unrelated to the police force & became good friends. George was a pussy cat out of the job but was & remains a good friend.

Man charged over missing teenager

SYDNEY: A man appeared in a Sydney court yesterday charged with sexual assault and kidnapping after police raided a property in Sydney’s west earlier in the day.

Police had found a 17 year-old girl who allegedly had been abducted as she walked home from school on Monday.

Vanna Chea, 23, of Hinchinbrook, was remanded in custody in Bankstown Local Court after being charged with kidnapping and four counts of sexual intercourse without consent.

He also was charged with breach of a personal violence order to stay away from the victim and her family, which was issued in Fairfield Court four weeks ago, on June 22.

The case was adjourned to Monday so a Cambodian interpreter could be found.

Police Prosecutor Sergeant George Kains said the sexual intercourse was alleged to have occurred between July 18 and yesterday.

Chea was an Australian resident, he said.

Blood-stained clothes, rifle found near suspect’s house

SYDNEY: Blood-stained clothing and a sawn-off rifle were found near the house of a man charged with the murder of his flatmate, Burwood Local Court was told yesterday.

Mr Martin Kluska, 27, of Dalton Street, Dubbo, in western NSW, was charged with the murder of Mr Bruce Mannion, 37, with whom he had lived for 10 weeks at Dubbo. Mr Mannion was reported missing last Wednesday by his parents.

Police Prosecutor Sergeant George Kains told the court that Mr Kluska had assumed the identity of Mr Mannion since his disappearance, using his car and withdrawing money from his bank account.

Sergeant Kains said blood stained clothing and a sawn-off .22 rifle were found in the garage of the Dalton Street house.

He said what appeared to be two bullet holes were found in Mr Mannion’s car which Mr Kluska had been driving.

Mr Kluska’s girlfriend told police that the defendant had scrubbed out the boot of the car and dumped property at Centennial Park, the

court was told.

Since Mr Mannion’s disappearance Mr Kluska had withdrawn $12,000 from Mr Mannion’s bank account and had spent four nights at the Boulevarde Hotel with two women.

Mr Kluska also had placed a $2000 deposit on a car and attempted to use Mr Mannion’s car as security to buy a motorbike.

He was arrested yesterday when attempting to collect the $2000 deposit from a car yard on Parramatta Road at Burwood.

Public Solicitor Ms Dorothy Hughes, in a bail application, said the defendant strongly denied the allegations and had not breached previous bail conditions.

The court was told that Mr Kluska was on parole until 1996 after serving sentences for previous convictions involving kidnapping and breaking and entering offences.

Magistrate Derrick Hand refused bail and remanded Mr Kluska in custody to appear in Burwood Court on August 4.

Man killed mother: police

SYDNEY: A 22-year-old man who allegedly kicked and punched his mother to death was found asleep beside her body on Christmas morning, Waverley Local Court was told yesterday.

Mr Robert Craig Taylor, of Glebe, was charged with having murdered 45-year-old Mrs Barbara Taylor.

The prosecutor, Sergeant George Kains, said it was alleged that Mr Taylor had returned to the Glebe house with his girlfriend at 2.30am on Thursday after attending a Christmas party and attacked his mother after an argument with his girlfriend.

A Justice of the Peace, Mr Peter Scanlan, refused bail and adjourned the matter for mention to the Coroner’s Court on January 5.

I would like to celebrate the Life and Times of my best mate. PD Survivor Jeff.

He came in to the world on 21/5/2007 with some siblings.

Father NSW Police Dog Haas of some Notoriety.

Mother a NZ Police Brood bitch with poor mothering skills. She ate all but two of the pups.

A surrogate mother, also a NSW PD killed the 2nd last one.

The remaining pup, Survivor Jeff.

His Grand father by all accounts was a well respected and feared South African Police Dog. His seed much sought after.

Young Jeff proved to be a bit of a hoodlum when being puppy walked and very high spirited.
I was due to re-team in June 2008. As a 52 year old Sergeant Dog Handler who was never the fastest bloke on the track I was given Jeff. Partly as punishment by the Ma’am – ( Supt Julie Middlemiss ). I think she believed, from prior progeny from HAAS that all failed to become police dogs, Jeff would follow suit.

I met Jeff, after some debate with Ma’am saying I needed time to get some sort of a bond two weeks before the course commenced at Bringelly in June 2008.
I met this stringy 12 month old ( B 21st May) dog and immediately felt a bond with him. Took him home and kept my mouth shut at what a cracking good dog I had in case someone changed their mind.

I commenced the course with some great blokes and dogs ( I may be corrected but this might be one of a few, if any, who all commenced and completed the course with same dogs)
Mark Smith and Harry, John Basan and Bernie, Gav Lawrence and Odie (Bodie), Paul Cornale and Boags.

I was still the slowest bloke on the course with one of the fastest dogs. Jeff made me look good; and for the next 10 years made me look good.
Great course with some great blokes. I was very fortunate to win the “Chuck Connor” trophy by about half a point from Mark Smith who with Harry had great obedience.

Jeff was not a brilliant Police Dog nor I a brilliant handler. He did everything I asked of him and then gave more. Being a supervisor I found myself locked in the supervisors office most shifts counting glocks answering phones, doing CMF, PMS, COPS everything but catching crooks.
Every chance I got I would escape and hunt developing Jeff. He loved the work.

In 2009 an opportunity came up to travel to Queensland Police Academy to train in Human Remains Detection (Cadaver) There were two positions. Paul Cornale and Boags were selected and I threw my hat in the ring.
The bosses fought but I begged and even cried I think to be allowed to go.
Bruno,(Paul Cornale) Boags, Jeff and I went!

I spent a month with Bruno in the antiquated barracks in Oxley loving every second of it.

Jeff excelled himself in the course and we were all accredited as Human Remains detection teams. There was a bit of QLD NSW rivalry but the QLD guys were so good to us. Best dog on the course was Tank handled by Ben Mac. What a cracking good dog. Little tough bastard bit like a croc. And Ben built like a bull didn’t need a dog.

I was so happy to be away from the office, phones PMS, CMT, COPS S.H.I.T. CMF and the rest playing with smelly body pieces and skid marked undies was heaven.

We returned to Sydney and increased the Cadaver dogs to 3 from 1 with Dave Cole and OSCAR ( Great Cadaver dog, son of ANJA my previous PD)

Together we did many jobs and Jeff, god bless him loved the work. He would not stop searching to the point I would have to tie him up or put him in the car so he would rest.
I was always very proud to be his handler when looking for missing people with their loved ones present thanking us for our efforts. Working with SCC, Homicide and Gangs Squads, educating them on where likely spots to hide or find bodies and how to get rid of bodies. They always remarked, ” You have thought about this a bit haven’t you “? Worried looks followed.
I was just so happy to be out in the bush with Jeff looking for a body. Jeff always did me proud and, as I said, made me and the Dog Unit look good.

In 2011 the PTSD bus hit me. As a result I was retired on 18th July 2013.
At this juncture I was not thinking properly ( more than usual). I must thank Mick Goodwin the Boss at the time he gave me Jeff. I believe without Jeff, Jane Mayer-Simcock my wife and girls Dayna and Kyrah, Things might have not gone so well.

From 2013 onwards Jeff and I were together, Jane could always find me, Just look for Jeff.

He continued to help people, Training dogs with aggression issues, Rangers how to deal with Dangerous dogs. People with fears of dogs. Everyone who came in to contact with the big fella loved him.
He had no malice or any vices. This may be hard to believe, but many can attest to it, but when working off lead he never chased any game, cat, other dog, roo’s wallaby’s, rabbits. He would just watch them go by and continue searching.

Last week on Wednesday he showed some lameness in his left shoulder. On and off over the last couple of years.
I took him to the vet Saturday started on some anti inflammatories.

Monday I was not happy and went back.

Heavier drugs, X-Rays Tuesday. Lunch time Tuesday shown number of spurs on spine and fused disc on thoracic. Probably accounting for shoulder pain not picked up in previous visits.
We were sending the x-rays to canberra for a specialist to view and looking at CT Scan in Canberra.

Wednesday 18th, 5 years since retirement, Jeff worse. Could not move properly fell on his face having dinner.

I decided on Wednesday it would be his last night – Thursday would be his last day. Put him to bed at foot of our bed and he did not move all night.

Thursday morning 19th he could not get up. I went out with Jane to do the horses. He always comes up. Some how he got to the middle of the hall way. When we got back, he had managed to get to the door to the garage but no further.

I picked him up and took him to the vet where he was put to sleep in the back of his ute with me holding his head.

I took him home and left him in the ute until after lunch. Jane and I went up near the horse sheds to the track where I walk the dogs every day and he was laid to rest in the bush facing the house so he can still look after us.

I will now be able to say g’day every time I walk past.

Jeff thank you for all you did, your patience with a dumb handler ( you probably deserved a better one) your work ethic and care of all our family even Mollie (Cavoodle) who only in the last week spoke to you.

The memories this brings back, one of the many tales about the old Sandstone Police Station at Gosford was that Ted Albury was meticulous about signing the many pads that were in existence in those days.

His standard signature was “Noted E.G. Albury“.

A few fellows who shall remain nameless took it upon themselves to reproduce that signature on every piece of paper that existed in the Station.

Noted E.G.Albury was cropping up on files all around the State and was strongly rumoured to have been seen on the back of a calendar hanging in the Commissioners Office.

The camaraderie and fellowship which existed amongst the troops in those days will forever remain in my memories.
