So close to Christmas it’s heartbreaking to hear that one of our police family’s is doing it tough.
Detective Sergeant Phil Buchardt, a sworn NSW Police Force Officer from St Mary’s Local Area Command was diagnosed earlier this year with an advanced and aggressive throat cancer. An operation attempting to remove some of the cancer caused damage to Phil’s tongue affecting his speech, breathing and ability to eat solid food. Phil’s doctors recently advised that the cancer is persisting and may not be operable.
Phil has been in the force for 33 years and was recently awarded the National Police Service Medal in addition to previous service medals. Phil, his wife Carol, who is also a serving NSW Police Force Officer and their 6 year old daughter Shelby are desperately feeling the strain of Phil’s condition and the financial burden of ongoing medical expenses. But Phil has great mates at St Mary’s LAC. They approached us and wanted to start fundraising to help Phil and his family.
So we’re asking you to help out. All donations will go directlyto Phil, NSW Police Legacy will not take any of the funds raised through this appeal. At this time of year especially, Christmas, when it should be all about spending times with loved ones and rejoicing in our good health and happiness, please send some love to Phil and his family and donate.
DAILY life throws plenty of challenges in the path of Myrle and Ken Hauser but the Mannering Park couple take each day as it comes.
Mrs Hauser has been Mr Hauser’s carer since about mid-2005, when he developed vascular dementia.
Dementia affects thinking, behaviour and the ability to perform everyday tasks.
Vascular dementia is the second most common form of dementia, after Alzheimer’s disease, and is associated with problems of circulation of blood to the brain.
The Hausers, who have been married for 64 years, will share their story with the nation as part of a television documentary.

On the presentation of the gold watch and chain and an address as an acknowledgement of Constable Ross, intrepid conduct rescuing two persons at the risk of his own life. Three cheers were given by the 50 residents attended the Balmain Council Chambers for the presentation.
The inscription: Presented to Constable John Benoni Ross by the inhabitants of Balmain, in admiration of his heroic conduct in rescuing two lives at a well accident, 18 April 1879. Balmain 2 June 1879.
A letter from the Inspector General of Police was noted at the 27 June 1879, Balmain Council meeting, having reference to the gallant conduct of Constable Ross at the recent well accident.
The watch remains in the Ross family treasures.

Kevin Banister May 4 2020 at 4:59 PM Went for a trip this afternoon (4/5/2020) to the Pioneers Memorial Reserve, Mowbray Road, Chatswood and took a couple of photos of the resting place of Senior Constable John Benone ROSS and family. This little cemetery is a heritage site and is being maintained by Lane Cove Council and what a wonderful job they are doing. The ribbon had fallen off and I re-attached it. In the bottom left corner of the plot is a rose bush as is on most other marked graves. Even these are pruned.

A letter from Mrs Meg Chamberlin formally of Ferdinand Street, Balmain and now of Macley Island, Queensland, stated that some information on her family history could be of interest to the Association. While cleaning out a draw on a visit to her mother at the family home, a letter was found with an interesting PS, relating to a presentation of a gold watch to Constable John Benone Ross in 1879.
Constable Ross was stationed at the Watch House from 1879 to 1882 and lived in Darling Street, Rozelle, near Red Lion Street. He then moved to Chatswood where he, his wife Sarah Ann and a child died within a few days of each other in a Typhoid epidemic in April 1885. John was 32 years and Sarah was 30 years and daughter Sarah 1 year. They were buried in the church yard of the Methodist Church, Chatswood. Comrades and friends erected the headstone. Grandmother Sarah Ann Robinson reared the other four children.
In a report in the Sydney Morning Herald, Tuesday 21″ April 1879:
On Friday morning a man named Albert Drave was nearly suffocated by descending into a newly dug well 25 feet deep behind the Bellevue, now Sackville Hotel, Darling Street. A blast had just taken place at the bottom of the well and the smoke not having thoroughly cleared way before Drave descended, he was almost suffocated when he reached the bottom. His distress having been noticed by the proprietor of the allotment Mr Barthrope, he at once descended to retrieve Drave, but he was likewise became overpowered by the fumes of the powder. Constable Ross being near the spot, volunteered to descend and succeeded in bringing up to the surface first Drave, then Barthrope. Drs. Brennan and Evans were quickly on the spot and industriously applied the usual restoratives. Both men are doing well at the latest accounts.

Suspicious Death.
ON Wednesday evening Senior-constable Ross, who is in charge of the North Willoughby station, received intelligence from a man named Henby that a death under suspicious circumstances had taken place in the district. He accordingly proceeded to a house near Burn’s Bay, Lane Cove Road, occupied by William Cox, who is stated to be an old resident of the district. In one of the rooms was found the body of Ann Sophia Cox in bed, looking to all appearance dead.
Dr. Rorke, of North Shore, was at once communicated with. He soon arrived, and expressed an opinion that deceased had probably met with her death in consequence of external injuries. The only female clothes in the house beyond those found on the woman were a chemise and another garment, both of which were stained with blood.
Under the circumstances the constable apprehended William Cox, the husband of the deceased, at a late hour last night, and he his now lodged at the St. Leonards police station.
Upon being questioned as to the occurrence the prisoner declared that he knew nothing of the cause of his wife’s death beyond that she had sustained a fall, and expressed ignorance concerning the garment stained with blood. It appears that Cox informed Henby of the death of the woman in the first place.
The police state that prisoner has been often seen of late under the influence of drink, and his domestic matters did not seem to have been of a happy character. He is described as of no occupation.
Funeral Prayers for the repose of the soul of Mr Syd Gallagher will be held in St Joseph’s Catholic Church, Station St, Chelsea on WEDNESDAY (Nov. 18, 2015) at 11 a. m.

It is with sadness that we advise the passing of retired member Syd Gallagher following an illness.
The Executive of the AEA-V, on behalf of its members, wish to
friends and colleagues.
Syd was a member in the Private Sector and worked for PSV. He was also the OH&S Rep at PSV and worked tirelessly to improve working conditions.
Syd mentioned in his resignation letter to the Union upon his retirement that he had been a union member for his entire working life and strongly believed in the protection and improvement of workers welfare, conditions and industrial rights.

ACLO’s started off as Ministerial Employees but are apparently now Public Servants as a job is advertised at Bre with a Clerk Grade 3/4. He died from Cancer.

Alan lost his life after a short battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife Veronica, two daughters, Jenny & Maree and two sons – serving officers with NSWPF, Anthony & Michael.
Alan participated in the 100th year anniversary ceremony regarding the murder of Constable Miles O’Grady at Nerrigundah whilst he ( Alan ) was stationed at Moruya on 9 April 1966.

AN Albury man, who today lost a Quarter Sessions appeal against convictions for resisting arrest and assaulting a constable, alleged that he was bashed by police.
James William Gehrig, 53, woodcutter, of Prune lane, Lavington, an Albury suburb, told the Court he was about to go to bed on October 17 when police arrived.
They said, ” you have been kicking up a bit of a disturbance and are drunk, ” he added.
Gehrig said he told them it was his brother who had caused the trouble.
The next he knew he was being hit on the head with a baton.
Gehrig said he fought off the constables and kicked one in the knee.
When he reached the police station, another constable punched him under the chin while he was still wearing handcuffs.
When the handcuffs were taken off, he was knocked to the ground, and ” they stuck the boot into me, ” Gehrig said. He had been kicked and punched almost senseless. One policeman had jumped on his chest.

Dr. Felix Favaloro, Albury doctor, had treated him, and he had spent eight days in hospital.
Dr. Favaloro told the Court that when he examined Gehrig, he had a swollen face, blackened eyes, and numerous bruises on the back and shoulders, four broken ribs, and a probable contusion of the lung.
Constable Leslie George Robinson and Constable John Raymond Curtin( # 7287 ) denied that Gehrig had been punched or kicked inside 0r outside the police station.
Constable Robinson said Gehrig had kicked him in the face, chest, and stomach.
Gehrig’s ribs might have been broken when he fell on him during a scuffle, he said.
Judge Brennan reaffirmed the Court of Petty Sessions convictions on November 13 on charges of resisting arrest, assaulting Constable Robinson, and causing malicious damage to a pair of police trousers.
He varied the sentence 0n the assault charge from 12 months’ good behaviour bond to a 10/ fine. He confirmed fines on the other two charges of 10/ each.
KJ is described as a pipe smoker and a rider of the old Vespa motor cycle. He was a ‘true gentleman and bloody good copper’.
His mates will remember him from the ‘end of night shift’ bbq’s at Campbelltown and his “easy country” style.
Glen DenholmWell, Mr Higgins would sit in the meal room, addressing everyone not by their first names but by calling them Mr Lewis, Mr Carrol, Mr Denholm ect.
He had an old enamel mug which was always filled with black tea and incessantly smoked Winfield cigarettes with a cigarette holder. This holder was supposed to filter all the tar and nicotine out of the cigarette before it got into your lungs, and it was black, filled with a black tar and looked obnoxious. We all smoked so I suppose it did not matter.
On night work he would go out alone and sit on one of the over passes on the expressway waiting for a break and enter to occur in the hope that he could snare someone. If there was a bust, he would never go to the bust, but allow others to go and he would head to the outskirts. Many is the time he snared a couple of would be crims using this tactic.
Just a really good, honest and lovely man. I can say that I had never seen the man annoyed or even upset, although when a friend of his suddenly resigned and the real story came out later KJ would not believe it.
We are all so lucky to have had him in our lives and the world is a poorer place without this lovely private man. Those who knew him should count themselves very lucky to have been touched by him.
Safe journey old mate, we all will see you, one day, on the other side.
