15 August 2017: Classic Pursuit Vehicle FB Group· John SOLVYNS sent this interesting submission through: That’s me at the door. This particular VC Commodore did the rounds of a few places in NSW for trial purposes in, I think, 1983 or 84. It was supplied by GMH with a Garrett turbocharger fitted. I believe it was done in order to try and crack the HWP pursuit car market which was dominated by Ford. Apart from that I don’t know too much of the technical info but there are people out there who could help. It worked very well as an unmarked car as there was an element of surprise. It didn’t end well, the turbo blew and the car was last seen leaving Tamworth on the back of a truck never to be heard of or seen again. You will notice from this picture, the car had a black front spoiler and bonnet vents.

POLICE SEIZE ‘POT’ PLANTS Constable 1/cDavid WHITEMAN ( # 14994 )( left ) and Constable 1/cJohn SOLVYNS ( # 15484 ) of Frenchs Forest Highway patrol, with the ‘pot’ plants. Police seized 91 Indian hemp plants found growing in planters in bush at Terrey Hills on Sunday. They believe the plants could be part of a number of crops under cultivation in the area. The 3″ high plants were found only about 50m off Booralie Rd. ”They were sitting in a tidy group in planter trays and ice-cream containers, ” police said yesterday. ” They had obviously been well cared for. “ The plants were in peat soil similar to that bought at nurseries. Police discovered the small plantation after seeing two youths acting suspiciously in the area. They searched a nearby car and found about 250 hemp seeds, a small quantity of hashish and three pipes used for smoking the hemp. Two youths were taken to Frenchs Forest police station for questioning.
I first met John when he joined and was stationed at Eastwood GD’s. I had the opportunity to take him out in a GTR Torana for the shift as I was on Eastwood STP. John told me that is when he got the urge to join the HWP.

Dr “Tony” Raymond has just passed away after a battle with Cancer
Dr Raymond was appointed as the first civilian director of the Forensic Services Group in the late 90s and although “Director” held the equivalent rank of Assistant Commissioner In charge of over 1000 police and civilians.
Tony was responsible for pioneering new forensic techniques in NSW such as Luminol and other chemical techniques seen on shows such as CSI.
He introduced civilians into SOCO positions ( Scene of Crime Officers ) and robotics into DNA laboratories in NSW and introduced Nationally accredited tertiary training for Forensic Crime Scene Examiners.
Tony was also a world recognised Blood Splash Expert and gave evidence in many forums including judicial reviews.
Tony also became NSW police first chief scientist.
Tony’s association in various roles went for around 20 years.
We thank you for your vision, foresight and aid in bringing many, many criminals to justice.

Our Volunteer in Policing Mr Stewart Thompson has hit some career highlights in his years. Stewart is 81 years of age, yet attends the NSW Mounted Police every Tuesday to assist with the Tour Groups and in the Museum. He rises at 4:30am in summer and 5:30am in winter, to feed his 16 horses, before boarding a train to the city, where he imparts his knowledge of our unit to the community.
For an 81 year old, Stewart does pretty well. He still rides each week and is in charge of the A Troop Richmond, Windsor as part of the Australian Light Horse. He runs his own museum, which is open to members of the public, displaying a plethora of both police and Australian Light Horse memorabilia.
Stewart joined NSWMP ( Mounted Police ) in 1955 and was stationed at Bellbrook Police Station in 1958. He was the last Mounted Officer at an outstation, when in July 1961 the Land Rover replaced the horse at Bellbrook.
Stewart continued his police service at Kurindi and Katoomba and resigned from the Police in 1969.
Stewart then rejoined the Australian Army (where he was stationed at Ingleburn prior to his Mounted Police service) and he served in the New Guinea Army.
We wish Stewart and his wife Joan, a very happy celebration of 60 years of marriage next year! A fantastic milestone for a wonderful couple.

In opposition to the above information about ‘Stewarts’ Policing service – which was obtained from the Police Mounted Unit; upon his death, NSWPF advertised that ‘Stewart’ was performing duties at Katoomba at the time of his disengagement on 7 November 1955, completing 13 years service with NSW Police Force.
The 1968 ‘Stud Book’ clearly shows J.R.S. Thompson, DOB: 8 April 1934 having been ‘Sworn In’ as a Probationary Constable on the 7 November 1955 and obtaining the Rank of Senior Constable on the 7 November 1966. As of 1968 he had qualified for a promotion to Sergeant 3rd Class but had Resigned, in 1969, prior to obtaining that Rank.
He does NOT appear in the 1969 ‘Stud Book’ which also verifies this data.
Unable to find any further information on Stewart – either Military, Private or Police, than what is above.

You worked in various rolls at the old Warilla Police Station from HWP and Detectives.
You were a great worker at Port Kembla in Court Processing.
I have video of you participating in a Cricket match between Warilla GD’s and HWP when we played in 1987 – but, unfortunately, the quality isn’t worth displaying.

Newtown police officer’s 34 day cycle challenge for colleague

When Senior Constable Anthony New offered to cycle from Perth to Sydney to raise money for his colleague Pam Sutton, she initially refused.
But after thinking about the uncertainty she faced with her latest cancer prognosis, she finally agreed.
Ms Sutton has provided administrative support to the officers at Newtown Police Station for 11 years. She has taken most of her sick leave and eaten up much of her super.
“It’ll help me catch up on medical bills … I don’t know what will happen (in the future). It’s a bit of a backup,” she said.
Senior Constable New will set off from South Mole Lighthouse in Fremantle and finish the 4000km journey at the Sydney Opera House 34 days later.
He hopes to raise at least $10,000 when he ‘pedals for pam’.
“It was just out of the blue. He said, ‘I will be riding from Perth to Sydney and I’d like to be able to support you and whatever is going to happen in the future’,” Ms Sutton said.
“It’s incredible that he would do that for someone else.”
“(At Newtown police station) we all get along really well … we’re good friends and we support each other,” she said.
Ms Sutton’s battle with cancer has been long and gruelling.
Since she was diagnosed with stage three bowel cancer in 2014, she has had part of her bowel, liver and lung removed, radiotherapy, chemotherapy and brachytherapy.
The cancer has now spread to her lymph nodes.
“The prognosis is not going to go away. It’s just going to be there. I have a win, I think I’ve beaten it, and then it says ‘hey you haven’t beaten me’ … it’s an ongoing battle between me and the disease and I’m going to win,” she said.
Ms Sutton has grandchildren and three kids in their 30s and 40s, which keep her going.
But work has also been a saving grace, so it’s pressing that she is receiving so much support from her colleagues.
“Coming to work helps. If I didn’t come to work, I think it would be very easy to give into the fatigue. (It’s good) coming to work and having people around me who are so positive. Just to say, ‘How you going?’ or “I’ll carry that for you’,” Ms Sutton said.
Senior Constable New started working at Newtown Police Station around the time Ms Sutton was first diagnosed with cancer.
“She’s just a really positive lady and wants to help out the officers. She’s worked in the station and helped out with counter inquires, she’s good with the public … she’s just a great lady,” Senior Constable New said.
“It makes the ride more important for me … I can ride for somebody and help a work colleague.”
Senior Constable New was a decathlete, a state champion in track and field, in the army reserves, but he said this solo bike ride across Australia is another beast.
“This is the hardest thing I will do but it’s nothing compared to what Pam will go through … if I suffer a little bit of pain out on the road.”
During the month of September, Senior Constable Anthony New will challenge himself to ride 4000km from Perth to Sydney, all while raising funds in support of his colleague Pam, who is living with cancer. Anthony will set off from South Mole Lighthouse, Fremantle (WA) and aims to finish 30 days later at the Sydney Opera House.

Here is Pam’s story:
Pam Sutton is a much loved and valued member with the Inner West Police Area Command. Pam has worked for NSW Police for 11 years as a General Administrative Support Officer.
Pam was diagnosed with Stage 3 Bowel Cancer in January 2014. She underwent surgery and began her first round of chemotherapy.
Since being diagnosed, Pam has continued to fight a courageous battle. Pam has endured many rounds of chemotherapy over the years as the cancer was found to have spread to different parts of her body. After Doctors detected cancer in the liver, Pam underwent another operation to have part of her liver removed followed by more chemotherapy.
Further tests revealed the cancer had spread to one of Pam’s lungs resulting in another operation to remove the tumour from the lung. Another gruelling round of chemotherapy followed. Further tests showed the cancer had spread to lymph node near the heart. Pam underwent radiotherapy and a particularly intense round of chemotherapy. The chemotherapy treatment could not continue as Pam’s immune system became too weak for further treatment. As a result, the chemotherapy treatment was stopped to allow Pam’s immunity to improve. The treatment had fortunately shrunk the size of the tumour, however, when the treatment ceased the tumour grew back.
Recent tests have shown the cancer has spread to the bladder and another lymph node. Pam has recently started another round of chemotherapy.
Pam has battled this illness for the past five and a half years, and to the amazement of her peers has taken minimal leave during treatment and recovery. She has continued to show up to work despite everything she has endured and even in times of feeling very unwell and weak due to the chemotherapy treatment. Her dedication, strength and her positive attitude are a wonder to all that cross her path.
Pam’s medical expenses have been ongoing and as anyone could image a huge burden to her. We’d like to ask anyone who would like to contribute to this worthy cause, to make a donation.
