98-year-old-man naked, unconscious

The frail victim was found semi-conscious with an injury to the forehead and could barely communicate with police.

The house in Dewhurst St, Coledale, was placed under police guard until crime scene police could investigate.

Meanwhile the elderly man was listed in a serious condition in Tamworth Base Hospital.

A close family friend found the victim shortly after 12pm when she forced open the front door, which appeared to have been barricaded with a chair.

Furniture was strewn across the floor, vases were knocked over and chairs tipped up.

Living alone, the man had not been in contact with friends since early in the week, and it’s possible he could have lay injured since Thursday.

Tamworth police sergeant Kevin Mcauliffe said the elderly man had an injury described as a contusion to the head and it was not known if he was dehydrated or had suffered any other injuries.

The contents of the lounge room were dishevelled, with police suspecting the man could have been assaulted in his home.

“There’s bits and pieces of furniture moved around in the lounge area and vases have been tipped over,” Sergeant Mcauliffe said.

He said a stool was placed behind the front door in a way suggesting it had been wedged to stop it from opening.

He could not confirm how the victim was injured or if anyone had broken in, however detectives are investigating the possibility of forced entry.

Sergeant Mcauliffe said it did not appear as though any property had been stolen, although again this could not be confirmed.

Police tried to interview the victim at the scene however he seemed confused and had difficulty speaking.

“If he has been there since Thursday he’s doing well,” Sergeant Mcauliffe said.

“Either someone has broken into the house and assaulted him or he’s had some kind of a turn and was thrashing about the place,” he said.

Hi everyone,
Sam Bass was my father. I just wanted to make a quick post to let everyone know of his passing and how much this group meant to him.
Last Sunday dad lost a battle he had been fighting and took his own life.
Anyone that knew Dad knew him as a lovable goofball with a giant heart that would give you the shirt of his own back.
Unfortunately, now one of the most beautiful and helpful human beings I’ve had the pleasure of knowing didn’t reach out for help when he needed it most.
My sister and I both served, and along with everyone in this group I’m sure we’ve all had more than our fair share of Friends lost to mental illness. I can tell you nothing I’ve experienced yet hits you quite like when it’s your father.
It’s ok to not be ok.
Please, please, please ask your mates how they’re doing, know YOU ARE NOT ALONE, and reach out to someone when you need.
Given the current circumstances we won’t be holding a funeral as such. Rather Sam will be cremated and once life is a bit less COVID crazy we scatter his ashes in Shoal Bay some time next year. Anyone is welcome.
Thanks to everyone in this group for allowing me to post and know that he loved you all and was on here multiple times a day.
Please feel free to send me a message on here if you feel you need and I’ll let everyone know more about the final goodbye when we do.
Regards
Mike Bass

Condolences to Bob’s family and friends.

Bob’s wife of 47 years, Helen ( who was head Matron at Taree Base Hospital ) predeceased him with Cancer in 2010.

Bob, some years later, met up again with a childhood sweetheart, Moira, and they married in 2013 and moved to Shoalhaven Heads ( South Coast ) where Bob was an active member in the local Men’s Shed and would help out the guys on the Wollondilly Historical Facebook page with his wealth of knowledge.

Bob is described as a good guy and a great boss who told me, in 2019, that he is ‘getting on a bit but enjoy a pretty good life despite the old bones and prostate cancer etc.

A bloke who didn’t mind a drop of Traminer TR2.

I first worked with Bob in 1986 at 31 Division Hurstville Police Station after leaving the NSW Police Academy as a young Probationary Constable.
At the time Bob was my supervising Sergeant. He was an awesome guy and a very respected Officer.
He was firm and measured in his response.
He headed up the NSW Police Blue Light Discos in the Hurstville area which were very well received by the younger members of the community.
I’ve spoken to a number of Bob’ old work mates in the last couple of days and we are all saddened with his passing.
RIP Bob.
You will be missed.
Thank you for your service.

Over 50 years proudly serving the Police Family

Here is a brief history of the development of Police Bank.

1970-79

Rapid Growth of Services
The Credit Union employed its first full time administration officers in 1970 to meet the growing demand for services. By late 1971, membership had reached 2,583 and deposits grew by over half a million dollars from the previous year. By 1972 the organisation was lending nearly $50,000 per month.

Appointed Representatives
Bob Dines became Chairman in 1970 with Arthur Sharp taking on the General Manager role the following year, a position he would hold for over a decade. Ian Pettit, Terry Seery, John Gorman, Bob Page, Merv Taylor and Alan Dahl joined as Directors in the early to mid seventies. Alan Dahl was elected Chairman in 1975 with the auditing firm, Nicholls & Thomas (Kevin Thomas principal), appointed in the same year.

Around this time the Credit Union appointed Dennis Neate as a ‘Field & Promotions Officer'(the forerunner to our Business Development Officers of today) to increase awareness of Police Credit Union across the state.

FLASHBACK FRIDAY | Photos from the Leader’s archives

  • Murray Trembath

Blue Light Discos run by Hurstville police in 1983 proved a huge success both socially and financially.

Twelve discos run between May and December that year packed Hurstville Council’s Marana Auditorium and recorded a profit of nearly $20,000.

Teenagers under 18 paid $2 entry to the discos, which were alcohol-free and supervised by off-duty police.

“Blue Light Disco Committee treasurer, Sergeant Bob McCloskey, announced a profit of $19,774,” the Leader reported.

”The number of teenagers at the discos regularly exceeded 1200 and forced organisers to pre-sell all tickets and hold none at the door.

“Up to 15 police have donated their spare time to each disco to make sure the dances ran smoothly.

“The discos were so successful that smoking could be banned without fear of numbers falling”.

More than $13,000 from the disco proceeds was donated to St George Hospital for new equipment.

Police Commissioner Cec Abbott attended the final disco of the year to present a cheque to hospital chairman Joe Orr.

A donation was also made to help buy a new bus for the Sunnyhurst special school at Penshurst.

The first Blue Light Disco was held in Victoria and the movement spread throughout Australia and across the globe.

Bob Dines in civvies on the end. 06 Apr 1982 was when King Karl Gustaf of Sweden ended his official visit to Sydney – probably the very last for which I wrote the Operation Orders. The photo was taken at Government house where the King had expressed his wish to personally thank the M/C escort squad before leaving for the airport. I didn’t normally get involved in this phase of such visits, but I was included as the “back room boy” who “looked after him,.” not just the usual flock of dignitaries and higher officials. My previous message gives the location.

Sergeant 3/c. K. R. (Ron) Wark – In November 1966,
12 members of the Police Rifle Club travelled to Tasmania to participate in the Annual Dunlop Shield Australian Police Rifle Club Competition, and although they did not win
the event they maintained a high standard of shooting.

In October, 7 members of the Club competed in the 1966 Queen’s Shoot held at the Anzac Rifle Range, Liverpool.

During 1966 the Club entered 2 Grade Teams in the Metropolitan District Rifle Clubs’ Union, which commenced participation in a series of shooting matches against Melbourne, beginning in August, 1966 concluding in June, 1967.

Sergeant 3/c. K. R.(Ron) Wark was one of three of the Police Rifle Club member to be selected from 540 members of the Union for inclusion in a team of 15 to represent Sydney.

West Wyalong Advocate (NSW : 1928 – 1954),

Monday 8 March 1954, page 2

UNGARIE MAN TRIED TO RESIST CONSTABLE

An Ungarie man had thrown himself to the ground several times in attempting to resist arrest, the West Wyalong Court of Petty Sessions was told on Friday.

Before the court was James Robert Fitzgerald of Ungarie, who pleaded guilty to two charges.

Fitzgerald was charged with resisting arrest on March 4, last Thursday, and using indecent language within the hearing of persons passing in Ethel Street, Ungarie.

The Police Prosecutor, Sgt. J. C. Wells, told Mr. W. Finlay S.M. that, at 9.30 p.m last Thursday night, Constable Kenneth Ronald Wark of Ungarie had spoken to Fitzgerald about language used in his home.

Apparently, the language was being used to his wife.

Attempting to arrest him, Fitzgerald had resisted, violently throwing himself to the ground on a number of occasions.

A civilian had to assist the officer and Fitzgerald was carried bodily to the car.

During the struggle, Fitzgerald had torn the constable’s coat at the seam and the coat now had blood and a grass stain on it.

Fitzgerald was last convicted at West Wyalong Court on January 6, 1954, for practically identical offences.

Mr. Finlay was told that Fitzgerald is a fettler by occupation, and he was now on transfer to Griffith.

Fitzgerald was fined £5 on each charge, and ordered to pay 10/- to Constable Wark as compensation for the damage to his clothes.

He was further ordered to enter a good behaviour bond of £30 for a period of two years.

Police in Nielsen inquiry cleared

SYDNEY: Three senior policemen have been publicly cleared of corruption allegations raised against them at the Juanita Nielsen inquest.

The NSW Minister for Police, Mr Anderson, told State Parliament yesterday that an internal police inquiry had found no evidence to substantiate allegations made by Mr Jim Anderson, a former associate of Mr Abe Saffron, a Sydney businessman.

Mr Jim Anderson asserted in September last year that he had seen Mr Saffron make cash payments during the 1970s to a number of policemen, including Assistant Police Commissioner Jim Pyne, Detective Sergeant Brian Ballard and a licensing officer, Inspector Keith Dunlop.

The Minister quoted Deputy Commissioner John Perrin who, with Executive Chief Superintendent Russ Sadler, conducted the investigation, as saying, “There is no evidence available to substantiate any of the allegations made by Anderson. . . or that any of the police and former police referred to by him have in any way been guilty of improper conduct”.

The Minister said that since Mr Jim Anderson was “involved in criminal proceedings it would be inappropriate to comment on any detail” of the investigation.

John was working at the Police Recruitment Office, Police HQ in 1954 when his brother, Don Avery ( NSWPF # 7893 ), applied to join the NSWPF.

After transferring to, and working from, Bega Police Station, John left the employ of NSWPF ( Resigned / Retired ? ) and then became an Insurance Broker in late 1970s, or possibly early 1980s and later moved to Griffith, NSW.

Survived by his wife Noreen, and children Christoper, Alison, and Joanne, 5 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.

Noreen subsequently died in Griffith in June 2018.

Her memorial service was 13 June 2018 at Griffith Ex Servicemans Club following private cremation.

…The Eulogy for John Edward Avery…
Welcomed into the world on 22nd January, 1936, in Chatswood,
NSW, John Edward Avery was the youngest child born to Francis
Daniel and May Columbia Avery (nee Barnes). There was Joan,
Edna, Don, Frank and John and John is now survived by his brother,
Don. Their father’s occupation was given as a “coal
lumper”…….
…A family friend, Alan Elworthy, to commence the Eulogy…
************
…Memories of John from his grandchildren…
************
John has had heart problems for many years. At the age of forty-
seven, he underwent quintuple by-pass surgery and then thirty years
later had a triple by-pass operation. John was one of those people
very attuned to his physical health and he managed his health
problems very well. His outlook was always positive, modest, stoical
and he never told anyone of any problems he had or suffered with.
Towards midday, on Tuesday, nine days ago, John realised that he
had a problem and so he called the ambulance to take him to the
Gosford District Hospital. Sadly, in spite of the best efforts of the
medicos, he was not able to recover and it was there at Gosford, John
Edward Avery, aged seventy-nine years, very suddenly and un-
expectedly departed this life on Wednesday, 18th March, 2015.
He will be very sadly missed by all those who knew and loved him. It
is a great debt we owe to men like John Avery for he was a man who
volunteered and was prepared to sacrifice his life in the military
services of this country. John also good and faithfully served the
citizens of NSW in the NSW Police Force for a period of sixteen years.

John was also one of those people who managed other people very well, for he was very, very organised with everybody and that included his family. It is his family who declare that John liked to do things his way.
Having said that though, John liked people, appreciated them and he was always quick to acknowledge those who had achieved something positive or good or performed admirably.
Those sorts of attributes are absolutely necessary to anyone with John’s aptitude for volunteering to do things for his fellow-man and society.
As an ex-president of two country Lions’ Clubs, a Life Member of the Sydney Adventist Hospital, a former Probus Club member, as well as being the current president of Terrigal Senior Citizens Association, John was always volunteering for something.
He was one of those people who was always busy, he could not sit still nor stop his mind from working, generally for the betterment of others.
John thought quietly and acted frankly, without fear or favour and, his penchant for organisation helped him to achieve what he wanted and better outcomes for the various organisations he supported. I am told that paperwork has been instituted more than twelve months ago, of which John was completely unaware, seeking to invest him with an Order of Australia Medal for his services to the community.
There is a saying, “we should build bridges, not barricades, stepping stones, not stumbling blocks.” John really did that and he didn’t do it in a serious or grim manner either.
He was known for his jokes or story-telling ability and John liked to laugh.
John also enjoyed travelling and, throughout his life, has been just about everywhere on this planet. More recently, he had discovered ocean cruising and had only returned from one such adventure, a couple of days before his passing. Above all else, the love of John’s life was his wife Noreen and he was a beloved husband of fifty-seven years, a much-loved and proud father of three, an adored and proud grandfather of five and great- grandfather of two, as well as a loved brother and a good friend.
His work here is now done.
May he rest in peace.

Still carrying a torch for the Games

Date: 25/01/2000

By ANTHONY DENNIS

A torch aloft. A flickering flame. A solitary runner. For an Olympic movement that has done its level best to dishonour its own stature, what does it say about such an event where three simple symbols can convey as much meaning and emotion as a gold medal?

Since its successful candidature, nearly seven years ago, the 2000 Olympics have been Sydney’s Games. The lighting of the flame in Olympia, Greece, on May 12 will be the single act which converts the Games into a truly national event and celebration of nationhood. Sydney’s Games will, hopefully, become Australia’s Games.

It will be a chance for Sydney, a city that in recent years had become somewhat self-obsessed to the exclusion of the other 15 million Australians – remember them? – to reach out to the rest of the nation.

It will be a rare opportunity, too, for the city to engage with the country and vice-a-versa.

So the torch relay is one of those unique sporting events that manage to surpass sport itself. But, above all, it will be a chance for ordinary Australians to prove how extraordinary they can be.

Nearly four years ago, ordinary Americans took part in the torch relay as it passed through the United States on its way to Atlanta.

The expressions on their faces were a contrast to some of the gold-medal-winning athletes, whose faces were often a portrait of arrogance and domination, especially on the running track where the Olympics go onto what is near enough to a war-footing.

Once participation was enough. Now winning is all. Even the IOC’s elaborate advertising campaign refers to the belief that you don’t win silver, you lose gold.

But the torch relay may be a vestige of the more traditional values of the Games in which participation was paramount.

There is an honesty about the relay that seems to have been lost from the broader event.

Now it’s the turn of Australians like Mr Gordon George Avery, of Bulli, named today as a 2000 torch-bearer. Mr Avery, who turns 75 on February 11, won silver at the 1948 London Olympics in the triple jump.

His thoughts typify the spirit of the relay and the old values of the Games: “The Olympic torch for me is the symbol of the Olympic Games. If you have ever been an Olympian and competed against all these people from other nations you can understand why an Olympian feels like he does.

“We feel like we understand the rest of the world, because we’ve lived and competed on a level playing field with all nations. Often they’re our very best friends without a thought of race, colour or creed.”

John Konrads, an extraordinary Australian whom no ordinary Australian could begrudge carrying the torch, agrees. “The torch is one of the very important elements … it brings the Olympics back to its origins in ancient Greece and relays that heritage to the current Olympic city,” said the 57-year-old who won gold in the 1500m freestyle at the 1960 Rome Games.

“It brings back very fond memories of other Olympic ceremonies I have attended. I will be very proud when I am running with the torch, which will be a permanent souvenir to keep as a family heirloom.”

The organisers like to describe the torch relay as the real start of the Games, but they’re saying so with a degree of desperation now.

The start of the relay can’t come a moment too soon for the IOC and SOCOG, eager to galvanise a jaundiced world and host nation in support of the Olympics.

Even a cynic studying the torch relay’s route around the continent would have to concede that it is brilliantly conceived. It’s a retirees’ blueprint for the ultimate round-Australia trip.

Keep the map. A few of us may choose to use it one day – Mount Isa to Mount Kosciuszko, Broome to Byron Bay, Darwin to Dubbo.

The torch relay is one of the few creations of Nazi Germany that the civilised world has not rejected. Not even the residue of hatred and bitterness from a world war was sufficient for London to abandon the relay at the 1948 Olympics.

The Truth Saved Him From Gaol

The fact that he had told the truth with regard to his seeking work saved a man from being gaoled for vagrancy when he came before the Goulburn Police Court yesterday.

He is William Roy Carroll, of no fixed address, and he was sentenced to the rising of the Court.

Constable D. Dulgin told the court of the circumstances in which he had found the defendant in a shed in Back Street.

Other police gave supporting evidence and explained to Mr. A. J. Paton, S.M., who was on the Bench, the conditions under which track rations and relief are granted.

Carroll told Mr. Paton that at the time of his arrest he was genuinely intending to leave Goulburn and find work.

He said he had a suitcase which contained 9 shirts, three hats, a pair of boots, a pair of shoes, a frying pan and “accessories,” and other clothing.

The case was adjourned to check up on his statements and later the suitcase was produced in court.

Constable W. Huff also tendered a letter which indicated that Carroll had sought work at the Government Employment Office.

Mr. Paton said he would give him a chance to get out of Goulburn and threatened to give him a stiff sentence if he came along again on a similar charge.

Three Months’ Gaol For Speeding

SYDNEY, Monday.

A driver of a semi-trailer which travelled up to 70 m.p.h. from Mascot to Wollongong, pursued by police, was to-day gaoled for six months.

The driver of the truck, Peter Justin Gleeson, 28, of no fixed address, also ‘had his licence cancelled for three years.

Mr. Avery, S.M., in Central Court, imposed the maximum sentence for the charge of dangerous driving.

Constable Huff, of 21 Division, said the semi-trailer at times veered to the wrong side of the road, forcing traffic to pull up and pedestrians to scatter for safety, while the police car was almost forced on to the foot path.

A road block was put up at Wollongong, but nine miles on the Sydney side, Gleeson lost control of the semi-trailer and ran off the road. Gleeson was found lying in the bush 60 yards away.

Man for trial over mother’s death

SYDNEY: A 22-year-old man was committed for trial yesterday on a charge of murdering his mother.

Mr Mark Frederick Yarad, unemployed, of Cronulla, appeared in the City Court, charged with having murdered Mrs Alma Isabella Yarad at Cronulla on March 15.

Mr Goldrick, SM, found that a prima facie case against Mr Yarad had been established, and committed him to the present sittings of the Central Criminal Court.

The man’s father said his son had undergone a complete personality change after leaving school, and had been abusive toward his mother

Mr Callile John Yarad, a bookmaker, said his son had been a perfect person until he was 18, being a fine scholar.

After finishing school his son would return home for a while and then go off again, and would never keep in touch with his parents, he said. During this time he had found his son had been taking “pot”.

Mr Yarad said a parcel, which he thought contained a gun, was delivered to his son at their home on the morning of the alleged murder.

That afternoon Mr Yarad sen. had gone out and when he returned he found the police at his house.

Detective-Sergeant W. Huff told the court he had gone to the house and had seen Mr Mark Yarad.

Sergeant Huff said Mr Yarad told him, “I have shot my mother — she’s inside”.
