Despite the Official Police email stating that “Records indicate that Assistant Commissioner Day was performing duty as the Assistant Commissioner, Crime at the time of his retirement on 22 May 1985, completing 39 years service with NSW Police“is incorrect as other records show him starting as a NSW Police Cadet, starting at the Academy on the 26 May 1941 and finishing, upon Retirement, on 22 May 1985. 4 days short of 44 years Service.

The Executive of the AEA-V, on behalf of its members, wish to
friends and colleagues.
Syd was a member in the Private Sector and worked for PSV. He was also the OH&S Rep at PSV and worked tirelessly to improve working conditions.
Syd mentioned in his resignation letter to the Union upon his retirement that he had been a union member for his entire working life and strongly believed in the protection and improvement of workers welfare, conditions and industrial rights.

Alan participated in the 100th year anniversary ceremony regarding the murder of Constable Miles O’Grady at Nerrigundah whilst he ( Alan ) was stationed at Moruya on 9 April 1966.

Policemen, citizen cited for bravery
SYDNEY, Tuesday. — Four policemen from country areas in NSW and one citizen from Robertson have been awarded the Queen’s commendation for brave conduct.
The awards were announced today by the Governor of NSW, Sir Roden Cutler.
Sergeant John Francis Stanley, Bathurst, was awarded the commendation for dealing with an emotionally disturbed man in possession of two loaded pistols and a .303 rifle.
He went to the man’s home and was forced to stand up against a hallway with the weapons pointed at him.
Sergeant Stanley struggled with the man and managed to disarm him.
Train crash
Sergeant Leonard George Valentine Jenkins and Mr Henry Edward John Donovan, of Robertson, risked their lives to save the crew of a locomotive which had crashed while hauling a number of petrol tankers.
Hundreds of gallons of petrol had escaped from the fuel tankers, creating extreme danger of explosion and fire.
Both men extinguished a fire burning adjacent to the locomotive, directly under a large fuel tanker.
Senior Constable Frank Thomas Byers and Constable Robert Reginald Lidden, both of Brewarrina, posing as kangaroo shooters, overcame a man who was armed with a shotgun and a .22 repeater rifle.
The man was later sentenced to twelve years hard labour on a charge of wounding another man with intent to murder.
AN Albury man, who today lost a Quarter Sessions appeal against convictions for resisting arrest and assaulting a constable, alleged that he was bashed by police.
James William Gehrig, 53, woodcutter, of Prune lane, Lavington, an Albury suburb, told the Court he was about to go to bed on October 17 when police arrived.
They said, ” you have been kicking up a bit of a disturbance and are drunk, ” he added.
Gehrig said he told them it was his brother who had caused the trouble.
The next he knew he was being hit on the head with a baton.
Gehrig said he fought off the constables and kicked one in the knee.
When he reached the police station, another constable punched him under the chin while he was still wearing handcuffs.
When the handcuffs were taken off, he was knocked to the ground, and ” they stuck the boot into me, ” Gehrig said. He had been kicked and punched almost senseless. One policeman had jumped on his chest.
‘ In hospital ‘
Dr. Felix Favaloro, Albury doctor, had treated him, and he had spent eight days in hospital.
Dr. Favaloro told the Court that when he examined Gehrig, he had a swollen face, blackened eyes, and numerous bruises on the back and shoulders, four broken ribs, and a probable contusion of the lung.
Constable Leslie George Robinson and Constable John Raymond Curtin( # 7287 ) denied that Gehrig had been punched or kicked inside 0r outside the police station.
Constable Robinson said Gehrig had kicked him in the face, chest, and stomach.
Gehrig’s ribs might have been broken when he fell on him during a scuffle, he said.
Judge Brennan reaffirmed the Court of Petty Sessions convictions on November 13 on charges of resisting arrest, assaulting Constable Robinson, and causing malicious damage to a pair of police trousers.
He varied the sentence 0n the assault charge from 12 months’ good behaviour bond to a 10/ fine. He confirmed fines on the other two charges of 10/ each.
Another ‘mentioned’ Brother is Roger. It is not known if Roger was in the Police.

When Thomas Wood Leonard was born on June 17, 1886, at Wingidgeon Station, Coonamble, in New South Wales, his father, Edward, was thirty six and his mother, Elizabeth, was thirty two.
He married Violet Rabey on December 1, 1908, in Windsor, New South Wales.
He then had three children by the time he was twenty seven.
Thomas Wood Leonard was made a Probationary constable on February 7, 1910, Badge Number 9062.
The family initially lived between 1931 – 1937 at 140 Balmain Rd Leichhardt East but by 1949 he was a Sergeant living at 200 Belmore Road Blakehurst with his wife and children.
He was a Sergeant Third Class upon his retirement on the 16 June 1946, the day before his sixtieth birthday and was awarded the Imperial Service Medal on the 25 March 1947.
He had been based over the years at Petersham (11 Division), Central (1 Division), Regent Street (2 Division), Balmain and Narrandera to name a few stations. Ex-Sergeant Leonard died on April 10, 1957, in Sydney, New South Wales, at the age of seventy from heart failure.
