Troubled police database blamed for officer’s death

THE force’s trouble-plagued LEAP database has been blamed for the death of a senior officer in a damages claim against the state lodged on behalf of his two young sons by their mother.

After 21 years on the force Sergeant Martin “Marty” Veal, 46, took his own life on June 1, 2015, using a police gun obtained a day before against force protocols.

Eulogy:

Good Afternoon, my name is Damian Downie ( Sen Sgt ) and today I would like to take you through the service history of Sergeant Martin Veal or as we all knew him, Marty.

Firstly I would like to say that it was an honour and a privilege to manage and work with Marty over the last 2 and half years.

In April 1994 Marty began his career as a recruit at the Victoria Police Academy.

From August 1994 through to 2002 Marty worked in the Coburg area as a Constable performing general duties.   In that time the Superintendents comments on Marty’s work performance were:

“A team player who will be an asset to his next station.” and

“A professional, conscientious, effective and efficient member who is an asset to the Force and displays potential for promotion”

The reasons behind these comments were Marty’s excellent work ethic and his tenacious nature.  In May 2000 while working at Coburg Police Station, Commander Peter Graham commended Marty for his good work in that:

“After an armed robbery on Pascoe Vale Road Marty used his local knowledge of the area to predict in advance the escape route of the offenders in which Marty arrested both of the offenders, recovered the knife used in the armed robbery and the victims cash.”

In July 2002, Marty transferred to Melbourne City Police Station as a Senior Constable performing general duties.  In that time the Superintendents comment on Marty’s work performance was:

“A well conducted member whose work performance was above satisfactory.”

In March 2007 Marty transferred to Heidelberg Uniform performing general duties.  In that time the Superintendents comment on Marty’s work performance was:

“An efficient, mature and hard working member whose work performance was above average.”

Testament to this:

In May 2007 while at Heidelberg Marty was recognised for his good work in arresting a rapist and preserving the crime scene that supported the conviction of the offender, and showing the diversity of Marty’s skills.

In that same month Marty was at the scene of an accident where one of the drivers forwarded a letter of thanks to the Officer in Charge of Heidelberg.  The lady involved in the car accident wanted to thank Marty for his professionalism and support.

In June 2009 Marty was promoted to Sergeant and transferred to one of the most innovate IT projects at the time, being the Criminal Justice Enhancement Program.  Marty was an asset to the project with his extensive operational knowledge and problem solving skills.  Marty’s efforts helped to deliver enhancements to the way Victoria Police managed offenders and communicated with other government departments.

In December 2010 Marty transferred to the Operations Response Unit where he performed specialist duties such as assisting local police with public safety, road policing and crime reduction.

In September 2011 Marty had the opportunity and transferred to the Victoria Police Air wing.  Marty was involved in a range of specialist activities including:

  • Aerial observation and tactical assistance for ground units.
  • Crime prevention and detection with regular patrols of metropolitan Melbourne.
  • Supporting ground units involved in pursuits
  • Search and Rescue missions

In March 2013 Marty transferred to what was then the LEAP Management Unit, and then on to the Business Readiness and Transition Unit.  When Marty transferred we identified that he had an extensive operational, IT and specialist services knowledge.  As a result of this knowledge Marty was assigned to the LEDR Mk2 Project.  I met Marty when he commenced at the LEDR Mk2 Project and over the next 2 and half years it was my pleasure to work with him.

In his role on the LEDR Mk2 Project Marty was instrumental in delivering an IT system that benefits operational members and people in the Victorian Community.  I was always impressed with Marty’s work ethic, his problem solving skills and dedication to supporting operational members.

Marty has been awarded the Victoria Police Service Medal with 20 year clasp, National Medal and the National Police Medal of which he will be awarded posthumously today.

Marty was a team player and he will be missed by me, people in our office and the Victoria Police community.

On behalf of Victoria Police and the Information, Systems and Security Command we’d like to express our deepest condolences and sympathy to the Veal family and their loved ones.

Thank You.

Paul Northey The class of 86 is devastated by this news and there have been many messages shared today between our crew. A few of us were lucky to catch up with him at the OIG centenary dinner a month or so ago and I was lucky enough to sit next to him, something I will always be grateful for. A freak of an athlete, fantastic teammate (1st XIII, 1st XI and OIGFC), always interested in how you were going and always with a smile on his face. We are grieving today for our mate who was blessed with incredible talent and intelligence who followed his own path in life, sometimes the road less travelled. I was able to sneak a final year of footy in 98 back at OIGFC and my only teammates left from the 1st XVIII of 86 were AP and Marty. I was blessed to play that year with the great MV, sweeping across half back like a quarterback controlling the ground as if it were his own…..and it was! He was so proud of his boys and our hearts ache for them and the rest of the Veal family who are in our thoughts. Rest peacefully MV!

Jarrod Gieschen Fantastic footballer, great mentor / clubman and a really good fella. Such a tragedy – thoughts are with the Veal family. RIP Marty.

George Gabriel Haros Vealy, no words but plenty of premiership memories. A question though: Why mate? Please boys if anyone else is feeling shit….. TALK! Talk to me. Talk to your mates. Talk to someone. Gx

Daniel Bernet Tragic news. Champion fella who had time for everyone. Thoughts are the with family

John William Stevens I loved playing with you because you had a calming influence over the team. If it was a tight game I always felt safe when you were there and knew we’d win and most of the time we did. You were a fantastic player and a wonderful clubman. You bled brown and white and the brown and white community is feeling your pain tonight. My thoughts and love go out to the whole Veal family who have given so much to our great club. I will always picture you sweeping across half back and pushing forward to kick one of your legendary goals in front of the pavilion. We will honour you at our 20 year reunion, a year in which you won the B and F and dominated in the GF. Here’s a picture of 2 of our greats sharing a beer with you tonight from the other side of the world. The third beer is for you mate. RIP

Glen Douglas Absolutely gutted hearing about this tragic loss..Vealy you had a massive heart on and off the ground..I can still hear you screaming at me to “Switch it” and watch you take off..farewell skipper. RIP #10.
Our thoughts and condolences to the Veal Family.
Chanz Crowley My thoughts are with his family and friends. His influence on many young men (including myself) at the club will be my lasting memory. Welcoming and caring. Gone too soon. #10

Dale Hawkes Marty, you were a legend at the footy club. Such a selfless person as a player, coach and administrator over so many years. I’ll always have great memories of playing with you in your ever reliable “sweeper” role in defence, bailing us out on so many occasions. Very sad news. Thoughts are with your friends and family. RIP mate.

Ryan Coleman Totally unbelievable. Such a great man who was so great to so many of us. Vealy always cared and was so supportive. Very sad news. Thoughts are with his family.

Trent Cormack Great bloke legend of club ,so sad to hear the news,RIP Vealy

John Smart Only played 2 seasons of seconds footy in the late 90s for old ivanhoe. Marty used to prop up the back line when we were short on numbers. It was easy to see Marty was a class above. In my minimal dealings with him he was a lovely fellow and made me feel welcome. I bumped into him last year nearly 15 years later and he remembered me and was exactly the same. Rip marty.

Nick Duggan In my short time at the club you were clearly a dedicated loyal clubman the kind of person footy clubs can’t do without !!
RIP Marty .

Dan VanWinkel Loved my time at OIGFC and I remember Marty as a very helpful, passionate and highly respected man with a wicked sense of humour. Hope everyone at the club is holding up.

Sam Pearce Marty Veal (MV), club legend, leader of men, an inspiration as a player and a great example of a true clubman! We’re thankful to have known you mate and our thoughts and prayers are with the family, close friends and all who knew you! What a great man!

Kayne Theodossi Shocked… What a star, gave his heart and sole for the brown and white, I really appreciated his feedback and advise.. Rest easy mate!

Steve Smith I had the pleasure of knowing Marty and his family through Banyule football and cricket clubs. Saddened by the news. My thoughts are with the whole Veal family. R.I.P. Marty

Steve Chalkley Martin …

My team mate. My committee mate. My confidant. My friend.
I can’t understand why and you, you strong stubborn headstrong bastard can’t explain it to me now.
A great man who we both know always told me there is a reason for the mad world we live in but I’m struggling to believe that right now.
You were more than a mate. More than a friend. You shed light when there was sometimes only dark.

You shook my hand on a wing one day (playing for Banyule) and told me I wouldn’t see you again. And your 35 possessions and 4 goals summed that up. I was banished to the seconds at OI almost never to return

I shared so many moments. Watched you determined to conquer what the world put before you. I am at a loss to figure this one.

I love you. I pay my respects to your family. I will always be indebted to you for how you made my life better.

I’m not religious but I trust you are at peace with yourself.

Always

Steve

Craig Nichol An amazing bloke always great with his time, so sad to hear this, my thoughts are with the Veal family

Robbie Chalkley Marty .. That twinkle you got in your eyes .. The smile you gave when talking of your passions .. You gave your heart and hand to so many .. Steve, Jaimee and I were so fortunate to have you in our lives ..
Rest now .. Thoughts and love to all the family xxx

Danny Gleeson A better person u could not meet rest in peace Marty

Alfie Jenkins Was only at the hoers for a couple of years and could tell that the man would do anything for Club. True gentleman and legend. RIP Marty

James M Wooster Marty. We went to the same Primary School – and played footy together all those years ago. We attended at the same Grammar School – and played footy together there as well. In 1992 I joined OIGFC and again we played footy there together and won three premierships with you patrolling the backline like a panther protecting his own. I followed you and other great mates into the same career pathway. And I’m glad I did. And we share the same first name. You were a leader and were damn good at it. You inspired many and guided others. I’m finding it hard to accept what has happened; I can’t believe the tragedy. My thoughts and prayers go out to the VEAL family and to the OIGFC family. Spiritually you are in a much more calmer and peaceful place. RIP mate. From a fellow BIG 7 member.

Belinda Hill Words cannot describe how much this is effecting those touched by Marty at some point in there lives… From all the Tolley Family – Mark, Craig, Allan, Robyn and myself, we pass on our deepest sympathy’s to all the Veal‘s at this difficult time. RIP xo…

Karen Schmidt My thought & prayers are with the Veal family & the extended OIGFC community at this very sad time

Richard Evans (Former VAFA President)

On Tuesday night I attended a gathering at Chelsworth Park, home of the Old Ivanhoe Grammarians’ Football Club.

It was an impromptu gathering called by the President Kevin McLean. At very short notice, the Club came together to honour a former Captain and leader of the club, Martin (Marty) Veal.

Married for some fourteen years, with two young sons, Martin, a Policemen, his life ended tragically on Monday morning, the first day of a very cold winter.

Upon hearing this tragic news, the Club decided to invite all associated with it to meet at Chelsworth Park; come together and try to work out how such a tragedy could occur and how best to deal with the human emotions. A committee man, Dan Bodycoat, himself a Police officer and grief/trauma counsellor addressed all present.

Why you might ask am I relating this sad event to you?

For many years whilst privileged to be part of the VAFA Board I stressed on many occasions our Association was more than a football competition. We are a mixture of clubs; men and women, who by their association are uniquely placed to embrace each other in circumstances that I have described where we can support, console, show concern, and offer our help and love to those most in need of it.

I know Management and Board are across many of the issues, such as depression, confronting people in our clubs . In your position you are able to “strengthen our arm” in dealing with such issues and showing leadership.

Last evenings’ experience whilst sad was uplifting, to see over ninety young men and women embrace each other and share a sad burden that had befallen them and their club and to find comfort in each other’s company. I urge you all Management and Board, players and supporters, as you steer the future, to even further cement links and ties with everyone in the VAFA; embrace them, hear their story and always be there for them.

If you or anyone you know need to talk, you can call Lifeline on 13 11 14. The VAFA and the player led initiative Thick and Thin encourage all in the VAFA community to #StartTheConvo if you or anyone in your circle need to talk.

Two Victoria Police officers take their own lives in a week

  • Nino Bucci and Cameron Houston

Victoria Police is grappling with the suicides of two officers in a week, as it awaits a high-level review of mental health issues within the force that is expected to recommend an overhaul of support services.

As Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton described the challenge of mental health issues among police as “one of the most important issues” he had to face, the families of the two officers were mourning the sudden losses.

In 41 days this year, two officers and a police employee have taken their lives. It has been almost 10 years since a Victoria Police officer died on duty, according to the Police Association honour roll.

The first officer who died this week was from Echuca police station, but ended his life at a house in Tocumwal, a small town in NSW about 110 kilometres to the north-east.

The other officer ( SenCon Paul Anthony BRENNAN ) was from Mordialloc station, and is understood to have taken his own life after being involved in a minor traffic incident in the bayside suburbs on Wednesday night.

Neither officer was on duty at the time of their deaths.

“The death by suicide of a police member is always cause for enormous concern at Victoria Police. Looking after our people is one of our highest priorities,” police spokeswoman Acting Sergeant Melissa Seach said.

“We are heavily committed to improving the mental health support available to all our staff.

“We know that anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress can all be triggered by the stressful situations our people can find themselves in.”

Acting Sergeant Seach said the Victoria Police Mental Health Review would be completed in late March. Mental health experts have been consulted as part of the review.

“Suicide has long been a problem for Victoria Police as it has been across the population in general.

“Victoria Police understands that with improvements in recognising and addressing mental health issues, the incidence of suicide can be reduced and we are committed to doing this.

“The organisation will continue to work … [with] partners such as the Police Association, beyondblue and independent universities to improve our services and ability to break down barriers and help those at risk.”

In October, The Age reported that an officer had taken her own life at a police station, soon after she was deemed fit to carry a service firearm, despite suffering from mental illness.

The leading senior constable ( Simone CARROLL ) was a mother of three.

It was also reported that a senior police officer who was charged with murder suffered mental health issues for almost a decade before he allegedly shot and killed a man during a routine intercept in Windsor in 2013.

Senior Constable Tim Baker, 44, allegedly shot Vlado Micetic three times in the chest during the intercept, and claimed he acted in self-defence.

He is believed to have an extensive history of psychiatric problems, raising further concerns about Victoria Police’s handling of mental illness and its policies surrounding access to firearms.

Mr Baker took extended leave on several occasions because of his illness, and was only allowed to resume work after approval from a Victoria Police psychiatrist.

But less than a year before the shooting, it is believed Mr Baker was involved in a serious altercation with another officer that should have set off alarms, according to colleagues of the accused man.

The coroner is also set to investigate the death of a sergeant ( Sergeant Martin James VEAL ) who took his own life last June.

It is believed at least five officer deaths are before the coroner. More than 40 Victoria Police officers have reportedly committed suicide since 1990.

The force said they would not comment on the circumstances of the officers’ deaths while they were the subject of coronial investigations, including whether they were reviewing access to service weapons.

The first officer  ( Ray McNISH ) who died this week was from Echuca police station, but ended his life at a house in Tocumwal, a small town in NSW about 110 kilometres to the north-east.

The leading senior constable ( Simon CARROLL ) was a mother of three.

Constable Glenn Wallace, died in a car accident on Friday 19 July 1985.

It is believed that during his shift he had broken down a colleague’s front door to stop the colleague’s wife’s attempted suicide. I presume she was treated and lived.

After his shift, he went to the local pub with his mates, as was the culture in those days.

No doubt the day’s events played a big role in heading to the pub—not that a reason was ever needed.

Some time later that night he drove home intoxicated and had a head on accident with a truck, which killed him instantly.

He died in part uniform, probably with his Cronulla / Sutherland Police Rugby League team track suit top on.

He hadn’t been home, but he was deemed not to be on duty as he hadn’t gone straight home from his work place.

He was only 25. He was in the Highway Patrol at Gundagai.

A true man’s man with a heart of gold and iron fists. You wouldn’t want to take him on.

Two idiots did at Cronulla one night on night shift. He was in the station alone and ran outside to stop an assault on the street. The two idiots attacked him. He left one unconscious and the other with a broken jaw. More fool them.

He was very important to all of his family, and of course his many friends. He was our leader, albeit often unwillingly, and his loss has darkened all of us forever.

The Evening Advocate ( Innisfail, Qld )     Tuesday  20 April 1943     p 1

FATAL FIGHT ABOUT SHEEP

NARRABRI. — A row about the death of a sheep was alleged to have led to a fight in which a man was killed. Mr. Thornton, PM remanded Henry Charles Legg, 68, teamster, to April 19 on a manslaughter charge, and jailed three other men for assault.

Legg is charged with having feloniously slain William James Dalton on April 3. Royal James Dalton and John Thomas Dalton were sentenced to two months’ jail, and Alfred Dalton to one month on charges of having assaulted Mounted Constable John Keegan, who was not on dut.

Royal and Alfred Dalton are sons, and John Dalton a brother of the dead man.

Constable Keegan said that in the yard of the Tourist Hotel, shortly before 6 pm, John Dalton accused him of having lied about the death of a sheep. Keegan said that when he told Dalton to go away or he would find himself locked up, Dalton said : “You are not game to put me in.” He replied: “None of you Dalton mob will bluff me.” Keegan said that Royal Dalton came out of the hotel, said, “You can beat the Daltons, can you?,” and attacked him. He knocked ” Royal Dalton down. Keegan added: “As I went to speak to Legg, who had asked to see me, Alf Dalton ran out of the hotel, and grappled with me. “Then Royal, John, Alf, and William Dalton were all on top of me, punching, and Alf was kicking me.

“I saw Legg pull William away and give him a sort of punch. William fell and struck his head on a concrete path.

Legg said he saw the fight start, and tried to stop it.

Jean Elma Comber, barmaid, said that Keegan might have had two drinks that afternoon. He was sober.

Detective Chamagn: Was Legg drunk?— No. I don’t think so.

On 24th May, 1880 Constable Thomson was on duty at the Binnaway Racecourse when his horse ran him into a tree, causing severe head injuries. He passed away about four weeks after the accident.
The Australian Town and Country Journal of 10 July, 1880 reported that “David Peter Thomson, who was first class constable in the mounted police, breathed his last at Coonabarabran last week, after a month of severe and trying illness, says the Mudgee INDEPENDENT, June 30. Constable Thompson met with a terrible accident on the Binnaway racecourse on Queen’s Birthday, his horse dashing him against a tree, and partially fracturing his skull. Deceased’s brother, Mr. John Thompson, railway stationmaster at Parramatta, was in constant attendance upon the sufferer during the last fortnight of his illness. The funeral was very largely attended, the Grand United Order of Oddfellows walking in procession.”

The constable was born in 1846 and joined the New South Wales Police Force on 10 January, 1873. At the time of his death he was stationed at Coonabarabran. He is not listed in the official New South Wales Police Honour Roll.

About 7am on 4 June, 1929 Sergeant Lanham finished his shift at the North Sydney Police Station and shortly thereafter collapsed and died. The following brief article appeared in The Sun of 4 June, 1929.

AFTER NIGHT’S WORK POLICEMAN DROPS DEAD.
Returning from duty at North Sydney about 7 a.m. to-day, Sergeant William J Lanham of Willoughby-road, North Sydney, collapsed and died. Sergeant Lanham had been suffering from high blood pressure. He was 50 years of age and had been connected at different times with the North Sydney. In 1914, he and Inspector Pattinson and Detective-Sergeant Miller and others arrested a gang of desperate thieves at Willoughby. Subsequently he was promoted and transferred to Paddington. Last year he was again appointed to North Sydney.

The sergeant was born in 1878 and joined the New South Wales Police Force on 3 January, 1908. He was stationed at North Sydney. He is also variously referred to as Lanaham, Lanahan and Danaham. He is not listed in the official New South Wales Police Honour Roll.

Joe GARDEN was at Mudgee Police Station around 1987-88 in uniform. Not sure where he was prior to that.
Joe started in the Detectives office as an ‘A’ lister around that time. He was left high and dry after the designated detectives moved on and he was forced to run the detectives office ‘one out’.
Apparently Joe hit the bottle quite badly and finished up banging up a police vehicle ‘on duty’ whilst intoxicated.
Had some major fights with ‘senior officers’ and was forced onto sick leave.
Joe was ‘Force transferred’ to Dubbo Intelligence Office and worked there for a year or two before he drew his service revolver, went home and shot himself.
It is believed that Joe was aged in his late 20’s or early 30’s, married with young kids at the time.
( 2019 ) Information is that Joe had attempted a drug over dose and had been admitted to Dubbo Base Hospital where, apart from other methods, he was orally administered ‘charcoal’ to absorb the poison.
He was seen, in Hospital, by a Mental Health worker who asked how he was.  Joe’s forceful reply was ” I’m FINE !! ” and Joe repeated that statement.
Later, that morning, Joe was discharged home.
Joe attended Dubbo Police Station where he picked up his Police issued revolver and went home where he placed a pillow slip over his head before fatally shooting himself, in the head, whilst on the lawn.
May you forever be at Peace Joe.

About 9am on 16 May, 1917 the sergeant was speaking with two men in the street in Gulgong when he suddenly became ill and had to be assisted to his home. He sadly passed away later that afternoon. He had apparently been ill with neuritis for about two years prior to his death.

The Mudgee Guardian and North-West Representative of 17 May, 1917 reported on the sergeant’s sudden death.

POLICE SERGEANT BLEECHMORE – SUDDEN DEATH AT GULGONG.
A painful sensation was caused at Gulgong on Wednesday afternoon, when it became known that Sergeant Bleechmore, officer in charge of the local police, had died suddenly. About nine o’clock on Wednesday morning the sergeant, as he was standing in Mayne-street opposite the Centennial Hotel, talking to Mr. W. G. Ashford MLA, Minister for Lands, and a representative of the Sun, who were both on their way to Coonabarabran to attend the Show there, was taken suddenly and seriously ill. He was taken to his home, where he lingered until two o’clock in the afternoon, about which time he breathed his last. Sergeant Bleechmore had been in ill health for some time, suffering from neuritis, but none of his friends (nor, it may be believed, he himself) anticipated that matters were so serious with him as it has transpired they were.

The sergeant was held in high esteem in Gulgong and the news of his tragically sudden death gave the townspeople a painful shock.

Sergeant Bleechmore was 49 years of age, and had been 27 years in the police force, and six years in charge the police at Gulgong. He leaves a wife and five children — four sons and one daughter.

The eldest son, who is 20 years of age, is employed at the Railway Station at Dunedoo. A second son is a school teacher, whilst the daughter is the youngest of the family. The three younger children – (as was also Mrs. Bleechmore) with their father when, he died.

The Leader of 25 May, 1917 provided a few more details of the incident and death of the sergeant.”Referring to the death of Sergeant Bleechmore, at Gulgong, the town’s “Advertiser” says: About two years ago deceased developed an attack of neuritis, and had sometimes suffered very much from the complaint. He lately had a recurrence of the attacks, but not to that extent to provoke uneasiness amongst his family and friends. He finished his work at the stable, and then went and had breakfast. At this time he appeared to be in the best of health and spirits.

The Hon. W. G. Ashford was passing through Gulgong on Wednesday morning, and he sent a message to Sergeant Bleechmore that he would be pleased to see him. Shortly after 9 o’clock Sergeant Bleechmore went out and met the Minister, who had with him a representative of the “Sun” newspaper. The trio were talking near the Centennial Hotel, when Sergeant Bleechmore remarked that he had suddenly become unwell, and said to the Minister, “May I put my hand on your shoulder?” Almost immediately he collapsed, and would have fallen only for Mr. Ashford’s promptitude in catching him. It was seen that Sergeant Bleechmore’s condition necessitated his removal to his home, where he was taken by Messrs. A. E. Souter and B. J. Naughton. Dr. Lees was immediately summoned.

“The sergeant was born in 1868 and joined the New South Wales Police Force on 14 April, 1890. He was the officer-in-charge of police at Gulgong and was survived by his wife Maria and five children.

Sergeant Watts succeeded him at Gulgong Police Station in July, 1917. He is not listed in the official New South Wales Police.

Leo Smith’s Death.Coronial Inquiry. An inquest touching the death of Leo Alexander Smith, who was recently found dead at Cumbandry, was held at the Court House, Gulgong, before the District Coroner, Mr. W. Arnott, P.M. on the 9th instant.

William Albert Bleechmore deposed that at about 7 p.m. on Friday night he was coming from Home Rule, and met a lady and two children in a sulky half-way down Caffrey’s Hill, which is 1 mile from the Post Office. About 160 yards behind the sulky he met deceased, who was riding horseback. Spoke to him and passed on. About 9 p.m. on the same night saw Mrs. Smith drive to Judge’s shop. Went down and saw the dead body of deceased whom he had spoken to on the hill, and which he identified as Leo Smith, son of Michael Smith, of Cumbandry. Carefully examined the body. Found a large abrasion on the right knee and a small scratch on the top of the right ear. There were no other external marks of violence. At 6 o’clock this ( Saturday ) morning went to a place on the Home Rule road just across where the railway line crosses the road, saw tracks where a horse had suddenly turned off the road and a great number of horse tracks where it had evidently been bucking. There was a mark where something had lain on the ground, and a small damp patch about the size of the palm of his hand. Two yards further on from the mark found the hat ( produced ), which is similar to that worn by deceased. Went to Smith’s residence at Cumbandry, and examined the pony that deceased was riding. It did not show any marks of having fallen, but on the saddle the right knee pad and right flap had marks of where it had grazed the ground. Was of opinion that the horse had bucked on to its side without falling and had thrown deceased who was an exceptionaly good rider for a boy.

William Richard Wall deposed that he was a Butcher, residing at Gulgong. He identified the boy as Leo Alexander Smith, who was his nephew, and was 13 years and 10 months old. He was born near Mudgee and was a schoolboy. Saw him about quarter past 6 yesterday ( Friday ), in Gulgong. He was just going to get his horse to start home. At about 8 p.m. his sister, Mrs. Smith, came to his place and saw that Leo had not come home, and she had found his pony, near Avery’s gate. Went with her in the sulky and found deceased lying not far from the road. Picked him up and handed him into the sulky to his mother. He was then quite warm. Brought him to Mr Judge’s and sent for a doctor.

Henry Joseph Harris, a duly qualified medical officer, residing at Gulgong. deposed that at about 9 a.m. last night ( Saturday ) he was summoned to the house of Mr. J. Judge. On arrival he saw the body of Leo Alexander Smith. He was fully clothed, with the exception of his boots and stockings. The only mark visible was an abrasion on the right knee. Was of opinion his neck was broken. He appeared to have been dead at least one hour. His Worship found that the deceased died from the effects of injuries accidentally received by falling from his horse.

“I AM GOING TO DIE, TED.”EVIDENCE AT INQUEST.A coronal inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the death of Mrs. Gray was held by Mr. Arnott, P.M., at the Gulgong Police Court on Thursday morning last.

William Albert Bleechmore, Sergeant of Police, deposed ” About 12 o’clock midnight on the 17th instant Mr. Gray, husband of deceased, came to the police station and informed me that his wife was dead. I immediately went round for Dr. Harris, the Government Medical Officer, and in his company went to Gray’s residence at Lagoon Paddock, about two miles from Gulgong. I saw the deceased lying on the bed. In company with Dr. Harris I took the body inside the house and the doctor carefully examined the body.

Edmund Gray, manager for Geo. Rouse‘s farm and residing at Lagoon Paddock, Gulgong, deposed: Only my late wife and myself were living at the house. My family were away in Sydney and Portland. We retired to bed about 10 p.m. We were sleeping on the front verandah. Deceased was in her usual state of health just before she went to bed. She did not complain. During the last few days, which were very hot, she complained of a smothering feeling about her chest. During the last two years she complained about shortness of breath if she had much exercise. As far as I know she was never treated for heart trouble, but, about two years ago, she underwent an operation for the removal of veins from one of the legs. About a quarter to eleven on Wednesday got her a drink. She started coughing. I was half asleep and was slow in getting up. The deceased got up and went to the water near by. I overtook her and gave her a drink from the water bag. She then came back to the verandah and sat on a sofa. She started spitting up phlegm and said, “I’m going to die, Ted.” I made no reply as I did not take her seriously. She asked me to strike a light and see what she was spitting up. I struck a match and she again said “I am going to die, Ted.” She jumped up off the couch and went to the bed and lay down. She was still coughing. I lifted her upon one knee as she seemed to be smothering. She then gave one long breath and died. The deceased was 51 years old, and was born at Gulgong. He and his wife attended a funeral the day before, and at the graveside his wife was overcome by the heat and fell on to her knees.

Dr. H. Harris, residing at Gulgong, deposed: About 12 midnight, accompanied by Sergeant Bleechmore, I visited the house of Mr. Gray, about two miles from Gulgong, and there saw deceased lying on a bed in her night dress. I could see no marks of violence on the body. About two years ago I gave deceased a course of treatment, and found that she had a somewhat enlarged fatty heart. I should say from indications, after listening to Mr. Gray’s evidence, and from my own knowledge, that deceased died from a disease of the muscle of the heart. The P.M. found that death was due to natural causes.

Horse Trainer Killed   Death of John Hartley.

Members of the racing fraternity were greatly shocked when they learned that John Hartley had been killed as the result of an accident on the Tallewang road on May 25th. He was about 50 years of age and was well known as a horse trainer. He had been for some time residing at Mundooran. He was well known in Mudgee and Gulgong.

A magisterial inquiry was opened at the Gulgong Police Court on Thursday morning last by Mr. George Rouse, deputy coroner.William Albert Bleechmore, Sergeant of Police, stationed at Gulgong deposed: At 12 midnight on the 25th May, I received a telephone message from the Rev. H. Woodger, at Tallewang, to the effect that he had found a man lying on the road near the Tallewang school, with his face covered with blood. I immediately proceeded to the place, accompanied by Dr. Payne. I there saw a man lying on the left-hand side of the traffic part of the road. I turned the body over and saw that it was that of a man about 50 years of age. I knew the man by sight, but did not know his name. The body was fully clothed, including an overcoat ( produced ). About six yards from where the body was lying I was shown this piece of an overcoat ( produced ) which corresponds to the portion of an overcoat missing from that found on deceased. The body was lying with the face downwards, and the left arm straight out from the body. There was a mark five yards back along the road, as if the body had been dragged. There was a number of abrasions on the face, particularly a large one over the right eye, and on the right side of the nose. The left ear was black or bruised, and had blood about it, and the bottom lip of the mouth had teeth marks buried in it. Both knees had a little skin off, and on the left shin there was an abrasion about three inches long. I saw no other marks of violence on the body. I found the sum of £1/3/ on deceased, also a metal watch and chain. About 100 yards further along the road from which the body was found, I found a bottle full of spirits, which I believed to be rum, and for over two miles further along the road at intervals I found a rug, a blanket, and an enamel plate. Late in the morning I went along the road in the direction of Stringy Bark, and six miles from where the body was found. I came across deceased’s horse and sulky. The sulky contained blankets, tent, and general cooking utensils, and rabbit traps. It looked as if deceased had been shifting his camp. I had the body brought to Gulgong. I know nothing of deceased’s antecedents. The soles of deceased’s boots were torn off from the front part. In my opinion deceased fell out of the sulky, and was dragged for five yards along the road, and probably by his over coat catching in some part of the vehicle. The lost piece of the coat, including the pocket, was caused to be torn from the overcoat.

Harold Woodger, Rector of Gulgong deposed On the 25th instant I was at Tallewang, and left the public school at 11.30 p.m. About 100 yards from the house I noticed the body of a man. Standing over the body was a yellow dog. I was accompanied by Clarence Bleechmore, and I sent him back to the public school to ask Mr. Kinder, the teacher, to come, and he came and looked at the body, and said the man was apparently dead. I drove to Tallewang Hotel and rang up the Sergeant of Police in Gulgong, informing him that there was a dead man on the road near Tallewang School. I then returned to the scene of the accident, and awaited the arrival of the Sergeant and doctor.

Kenneth Campbell, hotelkeeper, residing at Tallewang Hotel, deposed that he saw the body and knew the deceased. He was at my place on the 25th instant, arriving about 12 o’clock. He left about 2 o’clock, and returned about 6 p.m. Whilst at my place he had drinks during the day. He left my place about a quarter or half-past ten at night. He was travelling alone in a sulky. When he left he was a little under the influence of liquor. He took a bottle of rum with him. He said he was going to Stringy Bark. Another old man named Kelly was going to the same place, but I am not sure whether he was riding or driving. They had been drinking together that day. I believe deceased was going to Kelly’s camp to stay. Kelly had a bottle and a flask of whisky. I considered deceased was capable of managing his horse when he left my place.

Percy Herbert Payne deposed: I am a legally qualified medical practitioner, residing at Gulgong. On the morning of the 26th May about 12.30 a.m. I was awakened by Sergeant Bleechmore, who informed me that he had received word from Tallewang that a man had been injured, and asked me if I would accompany him. Sergeant Bleechmore and I set off and after proceeding about 17 miles along the road to Tallewang we were stopped by a party who informed us where the body of the man was lying. I examined the body and found the man was dead. There was a contused wound over the right eyebrow, and blood over the side of the face, and clotted blood was issuing from both nostrils and mouth. There was also an abrasion on the left knee cap, and one about four inches long on the shin-bone of the left leg. Death, in my opinion, was instantaneous, and due to a fractured skull. This could have been caused by deceased falling from his sulky directly on to his head.

John Andrew Lynch, hotelkeeper, residing at Gulgong, deposed to having identified the body as that of John Hartley, who by occupation was a horse-trainer; and a native of Grenfell (N.S.W.). Witness thought he was about 52 years of age. Deceased generally lived at Stringy Bark with James Kelly. The Coroner returned a verdict of accidental death.

THE FUNERAL The remains were interred in the Gulgong general cemetery on Thursday day afternoon last, the Rev. Mr. H. Woodger officiating. The mortuary arrangements were carried out by Mr. S. J. L. Turner.

William Albert Bleechmore not a miner but a Police Officer

Di Nash of Canberra is a descendant of Samuel Nash and Harriet née Coombe (Chapter 12 in The Complete History). She has emailed us with information about William Albert Bleechmore who was born in Auburn in 1867, son of Caroline Bleechmore née Coombe, Harriet’s younger sister. Caroline was widowed in 1869. William spent his adult life in mining areas of New South Wales but was not, as we surmised, a miner. He was a police officer. Di informed us that he was appointed a probationary constable on April 14 1891. He worked in various places west of Sydney and was the sergeant in charge at Gulgong when he died quite suddenly in May 1917. He had been chatting to the Minister for Lands and a Sydney reporter in Mayne Street Gulgong when he collapsed and was taken to his home, where he died several hours later. [1] Wendy Walker, who is a great-great granddaughter of William and Jane Jacka through their eldest daughter Mary Lilla Jane, is a long time researcher of Jacka and Coombe family history. She recently sent us related information about William Albert Bleechmore’s career in the New South Wales Police Force including references to the New South Wales Police Gazette for 1902 and 1911.

Di has suggested that perhaps Caroline and William went to New South Wales after the death of Benjamin Bleechmore, Caroline’s husband and William Albert’s father. Unfortunately the fate of Caroline is still a mystery. Di told us that William Albert’s death certificate listed his deceased father but had no information under the heading ‘mother’. This suggests William lost touch with his mother, perhaps because she was long dead by 1917 or perhaps because they had a falling out.
