Apparently Slats has been unwell for some time and was medivaced from Phuket to Australia, with liver failure. He spent several days in Hospital, in January, with Cellulitis in his left leg together with deep vein thrombosis.

His mother and sister flew from Australia to Phuket on the 31 October, 2017, but Slats passed away on an AirAmbulance flight back to Australia from Bangkok.

It has come to notice that the son of Darren, Ryan Jack “Slats” Slattery, passed away on the 29 December 2017, aged 29. Just over a month since Darren passed away.

Assault Charge Against Constable Fails

A charge of unlawful assault brought against Constable Maurice George Adams of Dubbo Police, by John Perrln, 69, military pensioner, of Darling Street, was dismissed by Mr. R. A. Kersley, S.M., at Dubbo Police Court yesterday.

Perrin alleged that Constable Adams twisted his arm and tried to shove his face into the bottom of a police motorcycle sidecar when he was arrested on August 23 on an indecent language charge.

Perrin was fined £10 or ten days hard labor on this charge. On another count of using insulting words to Constable Adams and Constable John Wilson, he was fined £3 or six days.

Sergeant Russell Alfred Goggin, of Dubbo Police, said at 12.35 p.m. on August 23, he was at his home lying down when he heard Perrin, who lives near him, calling out in a loud voice about somebody having let a horse into his garden. Perrin swore in a loud voice from 12.35 p.m. until 12.55 p.m., when constables Adams and Wilson in response to a phone call, arrived in a motor cycle outfit and arrested him, the Sergeant added.

Constable Maurice George Adams said that, accompanied by Constable Wilson, he went to Perrin‘s house and heard him using offensive language in a loud voice, accusing the neighbors of letting a horse into his yard. He and Constable Wilson arrested Perrin and took him to the police station.

Perrin, cross-examining Constable Adams, asked, ‘Do you remember saying: ‘I will put the boot underneath you?” Adams: ‘No.’ “Or saying: ‘I will bash your wife across the face’ when you arrested me?’ Adams: “No. I did not say anything at all.” “When you got me into the motorcycle did you ram my head down into the bottom of it?’ Adams: “No.” Have you been a military policeman?” Adams: ” No.”

POLICE EVIDENCE

Evidence corroborating Constable Adam’s statements was given by Constable John Phillip Wilson, who said Perrin was swearing in a loud voice when they arrived at his house.

At the station, Perrin said he wished to charge Constable Adams with assault, Constable Wilson continued. At no stage had he heard Constable Adams utter threats towards Perrin or his wife, nor had be used undue force when arresting him.

Perrin told the court he had found the horse in his garden, and a neighbor had run across the street to Sergeant Goggin‘s house. Shortly after, two policemen arrived and said: ” We are investigating about a horse being in the garden.” He was standing on the back verandah, and one of the policemen said to him: ” I will put the boot underneath you.” When he was arrested his wife said: ” No don’t take him.” The policeman he said, replied: ” I will push your **** face in.”

Perrin denied having used indecent language. Perrin claimed that what he said in front of the Police Station was that he ” was being treated like two German Baths,” meaning that he was not receiving fair treatment. He said the words could have been mistaken for something else. The police advanced another version of his words.

WIFE’S EVIDENCE

Perrin‘s wife, Irene Maude Perrin, said she discussed the presence of the horse in the garden with her husband, but they used low voices which could not possibly be heard in the street. When the policemen arrived, she showed Constable Adams the garden. He came back and grabbed Perrin‘s arm, and said: ” You are coming with me. I’ll put the toe of my boot under you.” “He then twisted my husband’s arm up behind his back,’ Mrs. Perrin said. ” I told him to leave my husband alone, and he said, ‘I will smash your face in for you and I will smack your face.’ He then took my husband out to the side car. He tried to push his head in to the side-car of the motorcycle.

To Sergeant Goggin, Mrs. Perrin said she had not walked to the front gate, and looked up and down the street on several occasions, nor had she called out. ” For God’s sake keep quiet.” She said someone had deliberately led a horse into the garden. Mr. Kersley convicted Perrin of the offence.

ASSAULT CHARGE

Giving evidence in his charge brought against Constable Adams of unlawful assault, Perrin said that when he was arrested, Adams twisted his arms behind his back and tried to shove his head into the floor of the side-car.’ Constable Adams again twisted his arm when he was being taken into the station and caused him considerable pain.

He was later examined by a doctor, Perrin added. Constable Adams denied Perrin‘s statements, and was corroborated by Constable Wilson, who said that if Const. Adams had twisted Perrin‘s arm, he could not have failed to notice it.

The case was dismissed.

Mayor’s multicultural wardrobe

ARTHUR Frauenfelder has forged another official link with Asia thanks to Albury residents George and Ester Krooglik.

Mr and Mrs Krooglik yesterday presented Cr Frauenfelder with a traditional robe and hat from Balkhash in the central Asian republic of Kazakhstan.

It was a gift from Balkhash Mayor Tokushev Kazhmurat Abylkhairovich in exchange for Cr Frauenfelder’s letter of friendship and other Albury mementoes.

Cr Frauenfelder and his wife, Julie, have previously visited China, where Albury has a sister cities link with Nanping.

Mr Krooglik, an Albury police officer, said he and his wife recently visited Kazahkstan to catch up with relatives.

“I was impressed with how Balkhash was a rural city like Albury and had a lake, too,” he said.

Mr Krooglik was born in Australia of Russian parents who had lived for many years in China.

His family had left Russia after the 1917 Bolshevik revolution and lived in East Asia.

FARMHAND, 17, CHARGED

WITH MURDER OF TAXI-DRIVER

A young Victorian farmhand was charged at Phillip St. police station at 4.30 am today with the murder of Joseph Edward Fisher, 29, Dee Why taxi-driver, at Church Point, last Saturday. He is Peter Mannington Harvie, 17½, of Eildon, a township about 60 miles from Melbourne.

Harvie was arrested shortly after midnight on Wynyard ramp, by Constable Bruce Soane and *Probationary Constable Kevin Proud, who were on beat duty. It is understood Harvie approached the two constables, said something to them, and accompanied them to Phillip St. police station. Harvie was questioned by Detective-Inspectors Calman and Rogers, of the CIB Homicide Squad, and wrote out and signed a long statement.

Dressed in old clothes — a high-necked woollen sweater over a working shirt, heavy boots and an old overcoat — Harvie was taken by car to the culvert at Church Point where Fisher‘s body was found. He was then brought back to Phillip St. police station and charged with murder.

Melbourne lead

As the charge was read Harvie gazed straight at the sergeant without speaking, and was then locked in a cell.

Harvie appeared before Mr. Macreadie, SM, at the Children’s Court, Albion St., at 10 am. Proceedings lasted only a couple of minutes.

Harvie was charged with the murder of Fisher and formally remanded until July 24, the date on which the coroner will hold the inquest. Harvie was then taken back to the CIB.

On Saturday at 11.30am Christopher Mallis, the owner of Fisher‘s cab, saw the cab being driven in Oxford St., Paddington, by a stranger.

Mallis stopped the cab and the stranger ran away.

Police then discovered bloodstains, a spent .22 calibre cartridge and Fisher‘s watch and cigarette lighter in the cab. A sawn-off pea rifle was found later in the backyard of a house near where the cab had been stopped.

Following publication of a photograph of the weapon in Melbourne newspapers yesterday, Detective Petty, of the Melbourne CIB, was visited by several youths.

Detective Petty communicated with CIB chief James Wiley, at the Sydney CIB. and detectives on the Fisher case then were instructed to search Sydney for a Victorian youth. It was while they were combing the city that Harvie was arrested by Constables Soane and Proud.

Farewell to Cliff McHardy

THE death has occurred at the weekend of former prominent Lithgow sports broadcaster and police officer, Cliff McHardy.

Mr McHardy, always a larger than life personality, was Detective Sergeant in charge of criminal investigations in Lithgow through to the mid 1970s.

He was transferred on promotion to Penrith where he retired with the rank of Detective Chief Superintendent. His retirement home was at Glenbrook but he kept in regular contact with Lithgow. Mr McHardy conducted the live broadcasts of Group 10 rugby league for Radio 2LT which were a popular feature of weekend sport at that time.

Mr McHardy told the Lithgow Mercury that one of his biggest disappointments in unsolved crime was the bizarre incident in 1970 when an attempt was made to derail the royal train during a night time passage through Lithgow with the Queen and Prince Phillip en route to Orange.

A log was placed across the tracks in a cutting at Bowenfels but was dislodged by a ‘sweeper’. The incident was officially hushed up but 30 years later made international headlines when revealed in the Mercury following an interview with the retired detective.

The disclosure even resulted in Mr McHardy being contacted by a Hollywood producer interested in making a movie about the drama.

Mr McHardy, who was in his 90th year, is survived by wife Colleen, daughters Ann Marie and Karen and son Peter and their children.

TWO MONTHS’ GAOL FOR ASSAULT WITH STOCK WHIP

An Inverell man — described by police as ‘an absolute nuisance‘ — who was said to have assaulted Inverell Jockey Club secretary, Jack Marquart, with a stock whip, was sent to gaol for two months by two Js.P. at Inverell Court to-day.

He was William David Gordon Munsie, aged 50, of no fixed abode. Munsie pleaded ‘not guilty’ to having unlawfully assaulted John Ambrose Marquart at Inverell racecourse on December 30, 1952.

Constable Clifford Mason McHardy said about 3:20 p.m. on December 30, following a telephone call to Inverell police station, he went to the stable at the rear of Inverell racecourse, where he was told something. ”

I saw the defendant riding a horse alone a track running at the rear of the course. ” When I first saw him he would have been about 300 yards from me. ” I started to follow him in the police truck along the roadway, and at the time the defendant was walking the horse. ” He appeared to look round and broke his horse into a full gallop.”

Const. McHardy said he pursued the defendant for about two miles through the paddock and all the time the defendant kept the horse at a full gallop.

” Marks On His Back “

” I arrested the defendant at his camp on December 31, and when I told him it was alleged he had assaulted Jack Marquart with a whip and had tried to run him down with his horse at the back of the racecourse, Munsie said: ” I was trying to make him let go of my bridle “. Const. McHardy said Munsie was then taken to Inverell police station and charged. The whip had been recovered at the racecourse at the time of the incident.

He said he had spoken to Marquart at the course and he had a number of marks down his back. Answering the defendant, Const. McHardy said Munsie went for two miles from the time he followed him to the time he lost him.

John Ambrose Marquart, clerk, of 85 Vivian Street, Inverell, said on December 30 last he was at the Inverell racecourse. He said Munsie went to the racecourse about 3 or 3.15 p.m. ” The first salute I got from Munsie was when he rode up to the loading ramp where the horses unload, and said: ‘Good day, Marquart.’ ” ” I said: ‘Good day. Chappie’. ” He rode away to some men at the new stable doors, and the next thing I knew was that Munsie was bellowing abuse and very bad language. ” I walked over towards him and said “Get away out of the road as quick as you can.’ ” He turned towards me with the horse he was on and charged straight for me. ” He appeared to be in a very drunken state and all you could hear was very bad language coming out of his mouth.” said Marquart. ” When he charged me I stepped aside and took hold of the horse by a check rein he was using on the horse. ” I held the horse by the rein, and then Munsie got into me with a double whip. ” He tried to flog me with the whip from the horse. ” He struck me with the whip. ” The marks on my body show he struck me at least three times. He hit me on the left shoulder,” Marquart said. ” I took the whip off him during the struggle. ( The whip was produced in Court ).

Marquart said he was wearing only a shirt and took the full force of the blows. ” After the first blow, I said to him: ‘For God’s sake. Chappie, go away. If you don’t I’ll have to send for the police’. ” I got my son to inform the police.” Marquart said the defendant was not employed at the racecourse on that day. He had no authority to be in the enclosure. ” I gave him no provocation to charge me and try to run me down.”

” Look Out, Jack “

He said he walked towards the gate to try to entice Munsie away. ” I was walking about 10 paces away when he came for me a second time. ” I heard someone say: ‘Look out. Jack.’ I stepped aside and Munsie went past me. ” It was the second time he tried to run me down. ” He saw the police coming and took to the hills.” Marquart said he had possession of the whip when Munsie charged him a second time.

Messrs B. A. Wood and J. Carmody, Js.P., were on the Bench. Sgt. J. McD. Dwyer prosecuted. Sgt. Dwyer said Munsie had a long record including a conviction for assault on December 15, 1947. for which he received one month’s hard labor, and another conviction for assault on June 24, 1949, when he received 14 days. ” He’s an absolute nuisance,” Sgt. Dwyer said. ” He’s only just been discharged from gaol. He’s no sooner out than he’s in again.”

Convicting Munsie, the chairman of the Bench. Mr. Wood, said: ” This sort of thing will not be tolerated. You have a very bad record. You will go to gaol for two months.”

Race with the stork

Three police constables ( half of the Merrylands force ) have just completed a race with the stork. Their three babies, all born in Parramatta Hospital, are boys.

Constable Wally Gibson narrowly won the event by two hours from colleague Constable George Marshall. Constable Laurie Shields came a poor third two weeks later. The three mothers and the boys ( all six of them ) are reported to ‘be fit and well’.

WRONGFUL ARREST

CLAIM AGAINST CONSTABLE REJECTED

A Parramatta District Court jury on Friday rejected a claim for damages against a police constable.

Laurence Beresford Tibbles, of Chetwynd Road, Guildford, sued Constable Laurence Shields, of Merrylands, for £1.000, alleging wrongful arrest, assault and malicious prosecution.

Mr. N. Nelson, for Tibbles, said his client had used insulting words when Constable Shields came to his house on December 20 last. Constable Shields had arrested Tibbles ” on the spur of the moment ” knowing that no offence was committed as the words had not been said in a public place, A magistrate in a lower Court hearing had dismissed the charge of insulting words on the grounds they could not be heard in public. and showed ” reckless indifference ” in arresting Tibbles.

Mr. S. Ross, for Shields, said the constable honestly believed an offence had been committed and had acted within his powers.

Judge Cameron Smith ordered Tibbles to pay costs.

driving an unregistered motor cycle. . He is John Barry Kedwell, 18. of Hassell Street, Wetherill park. : Constable L. Shields, of Merrylands, said that when he and another constable stopped Kedwell, he pulled out some notes, and said. ‘Will £5 do between the pair of you?”

FLOOD RELIEF

PUBLIC MEETING AT GUILDFORD

Last Wednesday night a public meeting was convened by Guildford Sub-Committee of Holroyd Council’s Flood Victims’ Fund, held in Guildford School of Arts. The election of office-bearers resulted as follows: President. Aid H. Maley; hon, secretary, Aid. O. D. Young; hon. treasurer. Mr. Bob Porter; Mr. Arthur Robinson, president Guildford R.S.L. and Constable Shields, of Guildford Citizens’ Boys Club, completed the executive committee.

After considerable discussion, general opinion of the meeting was that the best method to raise money was by conducting functions. It was decided that it was too late to commence a house to-house collection. Many suggestions were put forward. the three principal ones being, to approach Hoyts Theatres for use of the Regent Theatre for A Sunday entertainment, an evening at Mr. Charlie Davis’s private theatrette, and an open-air concert in Guildford Park.

If any persons have any suggestions that may assist the committee, they are invited to contact the sectary. Ald. O. D. Young, at Guildford Hardware Company, who. with the treasurer, Mr. Bob Porter, will also accept any donations.
