WOMBAT

Weeks of careful preparation by the Young Anglicans of Wombat and Kingsvale culminated in the Y.A. Ball, held at Wombat on Friday night, when a record crowd attended from all parts of the district. Buses arrived from Young, Harden, Cootamundra and Wallendbeen, besides numerous cars, and it was soon evident that comfortable dancing would be impossible. Two car loads of patrons arrived later, and, on seeing the crowded conditions, decided to save their feet and return home immediately. The dancers already in the hall made the best of it and took all the inevitable pushes and bumps in good part, with just one object in view and that was to enjoy themselves as well as conditions would permit. The door-keepers, J. Hall and A. Lemon, and ticket sellers, Jas Hall and J. Warner, had a busy time, but evidently did a good job, for the door takings amounted to about £96.

The hall was tastefully decorated, being latticed with red and white, with balloons to soften the effect, while the stage was adorned with an archway of flowers. About 9.45 the official party, consisting of Rev. Guy Julian, Mrs. R. Hall, Rev. F. M. Hill and Mrs. B. Minehan, Mrs. Julian, and Mr. R. Hall, made their entry, and the ball was officially opened by Rev. Guy Julian, of Harden.

The five flower girls then proceeded up the hall along a lane that had been formed towards the stage to the strains of ” Rendezvous, ” played on the piano by Mrs. J. Hall, and Maureen Prothero presented a bouquet to Mrs. Julian.

Little Maureen wore a frock of blue marquisette.

Pam Winbank in a pink net frock came next, and was followed by Helen Molloy and Janet Prothero in their frocks of white net.

Then came Elizabeth Hall, in a frock of white crepe, followed by Marion Bailey in pink net.

The eleven debs, in white, with their partners, then made their way towards the stage where they were in turn presented by Mrs. R. Hall to Rev. Guy Julien.

The debs, and partners were as follows:

Betty Oldfield, partnered by Mr. Jos Gabriel, wore a frock of white flat crepe, full skirt, tight fitting waist, sweetheart neckline, mittens to match.

Marie Nicolls, partnered by Mr. Worner, frock of silk net and lace over taffeta, full skirt, with peplum and tight-fitting bodice, mittens to match.

Marion Nicolls, partnered by Mr. M. Oldfield, frock of silk net and lace over taffeta, full skirt, with peplum and tight fitting-bodice, mittens to match.

Jessie Gehrig, partnered by Mr. F. Eastlake, frock of lace and water wave taffeta, full skirt, sweetheart neckline and mittens to match.

Merle Turton, partnered by Mr. C. Scott, frock with lace top and full water-wave taffeta skirt, and mittens to match.

Dulcie Parkinson, partnered by Mr. M. Williams, frock of whit’ satin, very full skirt, square neckline, and mittens to match.

Betty Parkinson, partnered by Mr. E. Parkinson, frock of white satin trimmed with sequins, full mittens to match.

Kathleen Ellison, partnered by Mr. J. Munro, frock of white organdi over taffeta, full skirt, sweetheart neckline, and mittens to match.

The debs, and their partners then completed one round of a special dance, comprising a waltz chain step to the strains of, ” When You Were Sweet Sixteen, ” and on completion of this, ” The Blue Danube Waltz ” was the signal for all hands to join in an old time waltz. The dancing then commenced in earnest, for which music was supplied by the ‘ Rhythm Rascals, ‘ of Harden, consisting of piano, trumpet, saxaphone, accordeon and drums.

The floor was controlled by Mr. Perce Fitzpatrick, who, as M.C., did a very creditable job, and saw that all the dancers’ requirements were adequately catered for.

Supper arrangements for almost 400 people had to be on a large scale, and in this connection a large marquee had been erected to substitute for a badly needed supper room.

The supper itself was excellent, and it was quite obvious that a great deal of extra work had been involved. While on this subject, it would be appropriate to devote a special word of praise to all those people who worked so untiringly in the preparation and serving of such a supper for so many, not forgetting the able workers who kept the water boiling and ready for its various uses.

Secretary Mrs. Minehan was certainly fortunate to have such a capable and willing committee.

At 2 p.m. it was decided to engage the orchestra for another hour, and so dancing was carried on till ‘ 3 a.m., when tired, but happy people wended their way homeward, satisfied that they’d seen the largest crowd at Wombat Hall since its erection, and still wondering where all the people came from.

Suicide of Annie B. Greener.

The Inquest.

Yesterday morning, at the International Hotel, an inquest was held upon the body of Annie Greener, who died at the hotel above named in Niagara-street on Saturday night. The enquiry was held before the Coroner, Mr. J. McLean, J.P., and a jury of twelve.

The first evidence taken was that of Thomas Blood, Police Constable, stationed at Armidale West who deposed to the effect that on Saturday night, the second inst., from information received, he went to a front parlour of the International Hotel, situated in Niagara-street, and saw the deceased, Annie Greener, lying on her back on a sofa.

Herbert Walker, Jane Walker, Ellen Wheeler, and Mary Croft were present at the time.

Witness examined the body of the deceased, but could not find any sign of life. She appeared to have been dead a few minutes. The body was warm. There were no marks of violence on the body.

Witness produced a tea cup and spoon handed to him by Jane Walker. The cup contained a little jam adhering to its sides, and what appeared to be crystals of strychnine.

In a box belonging to deceased, witness found no trace of poison. The box contained several letters which passed between deceased and a young man named Archy Fraser, and also two ladies’ gold rings.

Witness had known the deceased for the last six weeks, and she appeared in good health and spirits prior to this taking place. Could not find that the witness purchased poison of any description. In one of the letters found there appeared to have been a little misunderstanding which from a letter of later date had been made up.

Archibald Frazer deposed that he was a miner, and resided at Hillgrove West, and had known the deceased for a year, but had never promised to marry her, though he had paid for her board at the International Hotel for the last five or six weeks, on account of her illness through influenza. Remembered that on Saturday last, deceased called witness in after dinner and said, ” Mary is wanting to have a laugh at me, and she is trying to take you away from me, &c.” Witness replied that deceased was foolish to think of such a thing, and after tea deceased appeared in good spirits, till Mary Croft and witness played a game of cards, when deceased appeared a little put out. After this Mary Croft left the room, and deceased refused a drink from witness. Witness remarked to deceased that she looked very solemn, at which she only smiled.

Mary Croft then commenced to play the piano, and witness asked Annie to sing. She replied, “‘Mary will sing.” Witness said, “Do not be a fool Annie. Come on, you ought to know better.”

Witness then went to the room where Mary was playing and deceased followed, and then went into her bedroom. About five minutes after Mary Croft left the room, and witness lay down on the sofa. Shortly after deceased came out of her bedroom and went towards the bar, returning with Mrs. Walker. Mrs. Walker soon came back and told witness that Annie requested her to give some keys to witness, and then witness heard some one call out, “Archie, come quickly.”

Running to a sofa in a room, witness found deceased in a fit.

Deceased, in reply to witness’ queries, asked him to hold her head up high and not to ask her what was the matter. Witness then went for a doctor, and when he returned Annie was dead.

About four or five weeks ago people were saying unpleasant things about deceased, and she said, “I wonder if they would leave the dead alone.” Witness then said to the deceased, “If what people say is true, you don’t deserve to be looked after.”

After the game of cards Mary Croft and witness had a drink, but deceased would not have any.

Jane Walker gave evidence to the effect that she was the wife of the landlord of the International Hotel, and about five weeks ago deceased came in from Hillgrove Hospital, and remained until she was able to take a situation. Archy Fraser paid deceased’s board, and the deceased occupied a bedroom by herself.

On Saturday night deceased and Fraser were sitting on a sofa in the parlour, and deceased and Mary Croft had a game together. Then Annie Greener and witness also played Fraser and the girl Croft. Then Fraser and Mary Croft played together and deceased sat looking on. Deceased came in shortly after and said to Mrs. Walker that she wanted to speak to her, and shortly after lay down on the sofa.

Deceased complained of being sick and refused weak brandy and water, but asked for the keys of her boxes to be given to Archy. Shortly after the limbs of the deceased became rigid, and she straightened out stiff, living only about three quarters of an hour. Witness was sure that the deceased was not pregnant, and the deceased did not drink.

Mary Ann Croft deposed that she was a domestic servant at the International Hotel, and knew the deceased and Archy Fraser. The latter and deceased had been keeping company. Fraser and witness on Saturday night played cards against deceased and Mrs. Walker, and then witness and Fraser had a game. Never heard of any unpleasantness between Fraser and deceased.

About two or three minutes after this witness went to the bar, and about a quarter of an hour afterwards deceased called and said: “Come in Mary ; take my hand ; I am going to die ; pull off my boots.” Witness took off her boots and then deceased had a fit, during which she was frothing at the mouth, her limbs being drawn up.

Fraser then came in. Witness had never heard the deceased threaten to poison herself. On Saturday the deceased appeared more distant towards witness than previously. Had never seen Archy going into deceased’s bedroom.

The jury returned a verdict that deceased died by poison self-administered.

INDECENT ASSAULT.

Michael Kelleher, an old man about 60 years of age, was charged with indecently assaulting a lad named Herbert McFadden [aka Herbert McFyden ; Herbert McFayden ].

The prisoner, who was undefended, pleaded not guilty, and the following jury were empannelled: [sic] JP McKinlay (foreman), JM Duncan, EG Wakeford, W Miller, R Allingham, G Bliss, HW Pearson, C Howe, D Fraser, BG Dawson, J Rogerson, and WJ Moore.

Constable [Thomas] Blood, deposed to arresting the accused, who said he had only been down the street to the bridge, and had never put his hands upon the boy. He said he was not right in his head, and was not accountable for his actions when there was a full moon. Accused denied being near the spot indicated in the charge.

Herbert McFadden, a lad 10 years of age, who, not knowing the nature of an oath, made a declaration, and gave evidence to the effect that as he was coming home from school one afternoon in November, he was accosted by the accused, who took him under a bridge and committed the offence complained of.

GE Ratcliffe, a little fellow who had to be accommodated with a chair to enable him to see over the top of the witness box, gave evidence.

William Coucom, a lad 7 years of age, who also made a declaration, identified the accused as the man he saw take Herbert McFadden under the bridge.

Sarah Burrows, married sister of Herbert McFadden, deposed that Herbert came home on the evening in question and made a complaint, and, from an examination made on the following evening, certain stains were found on his clothes.

Martha McFadden, mother of Herbert McFadden, corroborated the last witness.

Ernest McFadden, a lad of 12 years of age, also gave evidence.

Accused [Michael Kelleher] made a statement to the effect that it was a made up affair, as the parties had a down on him. He denied ever having committed the offence. He had lived in the district 30 years, and no one could ever say he did a wrong thing.

Four witnesses were called for the defence, but no evidence was given with reference to the date on which the offence was alleged to have been committed.

His Honor having summed up, the jury, after a short deliberation, returned a verdict of guilty.

In answer to his Honor, Senior Sergeant Rafferty said he had known the accused for about 25 years, and there was nothing against him beyond that he used to drink to excess. He was remanded for sentence.

Car vandals’ busy Sunday morning in the south

A series of about 20 automobile offences in Canberra’s south which were committed early on Sunday morning have prompted the Australian Federal Police to warn motorists to hide or remove any removable fixtures from their cars to discourage thieves.

In Waramanga early Sunday morning, 14 automobiles had windows smashed, and two had property stolen from inside.

During the same period, six vehicles had petrol syphoned from them in Wanniassa, and two cars were stolen from Oxley and later recovered in Isabella Plains. Both cars had been stripped and vandalised.

Acting Inspector Terry Paff said that the offenders were probably in their late teens, and were stealing items for their own use.

He said there had been 1063 car-related crimes in Canberra between July 1986 and February this year, and that the increase in car crime was a result of a shift in crime trends away from burglaries as a result of Neighbourhood Watch.

He said that a special effort in the form of extra manpower was being made by police in an attempt to discourage thefts, but that it was ultimately up to car owners to secure their vehicles.

People with confidential information regarding automobile offences were asked to contact police on 497444.

One dead, one saved in fire

A woman died and a man was rescued by two policemen in a house fire in Melba yesterday.

The two policemen are to be recommended for a commendation.

Constable Terry Paff and Constable Neil Palmer, on the 10pm to 6am shift, were on patrol when, just after 5am, they noticed smoke billowing up from a high-density housing area in Melba.

” Terry notified Operations [ that ] we could see smoke and we headed in that direction “, Constable Palmer said yesterday. ” As we neared the area we could see clouds of black smoke issuing into the air.

” We arrived at the house in Boult Place and saw that the lounge-room area was gutted and we could hear the roof starting to collapse as we pulled up “.

They went to the front right-hand side of the house and smashed a window to get in. They went into what was the main bedroom of the house, which by then was full of thick, black smoke, forcing them to turn back.

While Constable Paff went to the front door and kicked it in, Constable Palmer went to the rear of the house, pulled up a barbecue skew and smashed a window which led to the back bedroom.

” I jumped up on the window sill and through the smoke saw what appeared to be a form lying on the bed “, Constable Palmer said.

He yelled at the person that the house was on fire, and to ” get out ” but the person ” did not answer or move “.

” I picked up an object from a bench and threw it at the person and again yelled to get out.

” At this stage he said, ‘ What the hell is going on ‘ … as the man came towards me I pulled him through the window.

” As I was helping him through the window I heard the fire brigade start up “.

The man, Mr John Mordaunt, of Hackett, in his early 40s, had told him that there was a woman in the house.

” I went to the front of the house and saw that Terry was all right, but as we could not get into the main lounge room we had to give up our search for anyone else in the house “, he said.

” We think that the chap was only saved because the door to his bedroom had been closed and a vacuum had been created in the loungeroom. During the entire time we heard the sounds of the roof collapsing.

” The woman was later found in a corner of the loungeroom “.

Police will not issue the name of the woman, identified as Mr Mordaunt’s de-facto wife, until all relatives had been informed.

Constable Palmer had been taken to the Royal Canberra Hospital with a sprained ankle but was later allowed home. Constable Paff and Mr Mordaunt were not injured.

Chief Inspector Max Bradley, Officer in Charge of Belconnen police station, praised the action of his two officers. They had demonstrated outstanding dedication to duty, spotting the fire and responding to it.

” But for their courage in entering the blazing town house there could well have been another life lost “, he said.

” I will be recommending to the commissioner that they receive some appropriate commendation in recognition of their action “.

Belconnen detectives are carrying out an investigation into the fire, the cause of which is not yet known. Police said there were no suspicious

circumstances.

Firemen from the Charnwood and Belconnen brigades extinguished the fire in 15 minutes.

Two dogs also perished.

Two sent for trial over the death of a twin baby

There was a poignant scene in the old stone courthouse at Katoomba on Wednesday, when a detective handed the District Coroner ( Mr. P. O. Medlicott ) a photograph of the body of a six-weeks-old baby boy, described by doctors as shrivelled, wasted, and a victim of malnutrition.

Turning to the baby’s parents, who had been charged with manslaughter, Sgt. A. Waining ( assisting the Coroner ) said: ‘I don’t suppose you want to see it. You are entitled to see it, if you want to.’

The baby’s father, 26 years-old railway fettler, Leslie Williams, studied the photo impassively, but his 35 years-old de facto wife, Mrs. Peggy Winifred Lillian Poile, whose long hair flowed over her shoulders, turned away, hid her tear-stained face in the arms of a police woman, and sobbed convulsively.

The story told to the coroner began two years ago, when Mrs. Poile, having left her legal husband, went to live with Williams.

On April 19 last the couple, giving the name of Mr. and Mrs. Williams, called at the home of Mrs. Gwenllian Cousins, in Walgett St., Katoomba, seeking accommodation. ‘They had no money,’ said Mrs. Cousins.

‘Williams said he would pay me three weeks’ rent when he received his pay from the railways, which he did.

‘Mrs. Williams looked very ill, and was obviously expecting a baby, so I let them have No. 2 flat. ‘She didn’t make any preparations at all for the arrival of the child or children. People gave her things. ‘The flat was never tidy. I told her she should clean it up.’

On May 15, Mrs. Cousins drove Mrs. Williams — as most of the witnesses called her — to the Blue Mountains District Hospital.

‘Grey-Looking’

Sister Edith Mary Jones, of the hospital’s obstetric ward, told the coroner that Mrs. Williams first gave birth to a girl weighing 41b 4.5 oz., and 15 minutes later, to a boy weighing 41b 4.5 oz.

Mrs. Williams took her babies, Gary Lawrence and Lesley Gail, back to her flat on May 29.

On Tuesday, June 23, Mrs. Cousins noticed that Gary was ‘a bit grey looking,’ and told Mrs. Williams she should take him to a doctor at once.

About 5.30 that afternoon, Mrs. Williams asked a neighbor, Beryl Fay Martin, also known as Mrs. Andrews, to mind the children while she went to meet her husband.

The babies’ parents returned home shortly after 9 p.m. ‘They had both had quite a few drinks,’ said Mrs. Andrews. ‘I think you could say they were drunk.

‘Mrs. Williams picked up the boy and started feeding him on the breast, and I think Mr. Williams went to pay the rent,’ she said.

The landlady, Mrs. Cousins, said that later that night she saw Mr. and Mrs. Williams in bed fully clothed.

‘Pretty full’

Next night, according to a statement, Williams allegedly made to police, he and the babies’ mother again went out and got ‘pretty full.’

About 5.45 next morning, Mrs. Williams hurried to Katoomba police station, carrying Gary, wrapped in what Const. Maurice John Tyler described as ‘a grubby shawl.’

The constable said Mrs. Williams told him: ‘When I woke up this morning, the baby was cold and grey. I tried to get a taxi to go to the hospital.’

The constable took Mrs. Williams to the hospital. Sister Ruby Helen Wilson said that when the child arrived at the hospital, it was dressed in grubby clothes and wrapped in a dirty shawl.

‘I examined the child and found it was very cold, blue, dirty and obviously under-nourished,’ said Sister Wilson.

‘I contacted the matron, placed the baby in an oxygen tent and packed it with hot water bottles.’

Dr. Alfred Kenneth Jones, relieving Government Medical Officer at Katoomba, said he examined Gary at 11 o’clock the same morning. ‘He was obviously very sick, and deeply cyanosed — that means blue,’ said the doctor. ‘He was very wasted, consistent with a state of malnutrition.

In my opinion, medical attention should have been sought for the child considerably earlier.

‘Wastage would have occurred over perhaps two to three weeks, and I think should have been obvious to any person having care of the child.’

Gary Williams died about 4 a.m. next day, June 26.

Seven hours later, Dr. Jones said, he performed a post-mortem examination. The baby was very emaciated, and there was almost complete absence of sub-cutaneous fat.

‘Shrivelled up’

The small Intestine was completely collapsed, due to the absence of food. ‘It would seem that the persons who had charge of the baby had not given it sufficient to eat,’ the doctor said. ‘In my opinion, the cause of death was malnutrition, with terminal pneumonia.’

Dr Philip Hudson Macindoe, of Wentworth Falls, who also examined the baby, while it was in the oxygen tent, said it was ‘wasted, underweight, and shrivelled up,’ and apparently suffering from malnutrition.

Dr. Alfred Alcorn, of Echo Point, said that at 4 p.m. on June 26, at the request of Det. Sgt. Fisher he examined Mrs. Williams’ baby daughter, Lesley. She was thin, and in his opinion was also suffering from malnutrition. Her condition was now ‘quite improved.’

William James Irons, district officer of the Child Welfare Department, said he accompanied police in an inspection of the Williams’ flat on June 25.

‘Did the best’

The premises were filthy, and unfit for children he said.

Det.-Sgt. John Thomas Fisher ( NSWPF # ???? ), of Katoomba, said he had told Williams: ‘It’s alleged the baby was green yesterday morning, when Mrs. Cousins saw it.’ Williams replied that he had a hangover, and added: ‘I was that crook I didn’t feel like worrying about it. I sat in the backyard in the sun,’ said Fisher.

Williams told the coroner he did not wish to give evidence at the inquest. Mrs. Poile, however, elected to enter the witness box.

Her evidence consisted of two sentences, spoken between tears. ‘I just want to say I did the best for the baby.’ she sobbed. ‘Honest, I didn’t realise he was so ill.’

The coroner found that Gary Williams died from pneumonia, following malnutrition, which was the result of lack of care by its parents, and that the parents feloniously slew the child.

He committed Williams and Mrs. Poile for trial at Parramatta Quarter Sessions, and allowed each £100 bail.

Death of Constable Carpenter.

The death of Constable William Carpenter, who was in charge of the Moss Vale police station from August 10, 1891, to May 25, 1894, and was then transferred to Parramatta, took place at the latter town on Saturday last after a long illness.

After recovering from a severe attack of pneumonia he was retired as unfit for further service.

A few weeks later he was again taken ill with an affection of the heart and from that attack never recovered.

He had been in the service about 30 years and was a most efficient officer and highly respected by all who knew him.

He was twice married, his first wife and their child predeceasing him nearly twelve years, their remains being laid to rest at Bowral.

He married again, and leaves a wife and eight-year-old son to mourn their loss.

He was a brother-in-law to Mr. H. Jervis, Moss Vale.

Deceased’s remains were interred in the Church of England cemetery at Rookwood on Monday last.

DEATH OF CONSTABLE CARPENTER

Constable Wm. Carpenter ( for really he died in harness, though the authorities regarded the matter, technically, in a different light ) passed away on Saturday evening.

A few weeks ago he appeared to make a rally from the effects of his serious attack of illness ; but matters took a fatal turn a few days later, and then the end came, somewhat suddenly.

The funeral, which was largely attended, took place on Monday afternoon, the Rev. H. F. L. Palmer reading the Burial Service at the graveside at the Necropolis, Rookwood, and Mr. Ralph Metcalfe having charge of the funeral arrangements.

The clergyman took the opportunity afforded by the presence of scores of men ( some of whom, by the nature of their occupations, have but limited opportunities of attending public worship regularly ) to say a few earnest and solemn words suited to the occasion, referring to the opportunities afforded during this life of doing some good and thus ” rising ( through Christ ) to the life eternal. ” Mr. Palmer referred in a few affectionately-toned words to the gentleness and patience and valour, in suffering, of the comrade there departed, whose career and character had won him such universal respect and esteem in all the districts in which he had lived in Australia. Among those present at the funeral were : Inspector Grugeon, Dr. Kearney, ex-Sub-Inspector Fowler, Senior-Sergeant Bennett, Sergeant Nies, Mr. T. R. Moxham, Messrs. C. E. Byrnes, A. Holmes, Alderman Telfer, Messrs. G. H. Mobbs, J. Ridal, W. Board, W. Moxham, West Harkins, Smith, Robertson, R. Yates, Gimbert, Eddie, Allison, Qrr, Mortimer, Denman, Campbell, Williamson, Gill, Rafter, Overton, Gilchrist. Mahony, Senior-Constable Noble ( an old friend, from Wollongong ). Mr. Trelford ( special constable, Minmi, who had served with the deceased in the Irish constabulary in the old country ), Messrs. Before H. Connell, and J. H. Caird Js P. Petty Larceny.- Christina Linklater, who appeared before the court with an infant in her arms, with which she had been incarcerated since the previous night, was charged with stealing a saddle the property of one William Goodwin, who valued it at 5s.

Constable William Carpenter, being sworn, stated that he apprehended the prisoner between 11 and 12 o’clock on Wednesday night, and charged her with stealing a saddle ( produced ) from a horse’s back in Tory’s Yard.

She said she knew nothing about it ; he believed her to be under the influence of drink at the time ; he took her to the lock-up with her baby in her arms ; he believed she had five children at home with no one to look after them. Prisoner elected to be dealt with summarily, and was ordered to be imprisoned in the Kiama lock-up for 24 hours.

The burial will follow at the Mary Mackillop Cemetery, Humphreys Road South Kincumber, ( Turn right off Empire Bay Drive onto Mackillop Rd, then turn right at ‘T’ intersection onto Humphreys Rd and continue down to the Cemetery and Historic Old Catholic Church and old Orphanage.

Gerry Wall recently received his “OBE” Over Bloody Eighty Certificate this year at our Retired Police branch and will be sadly missed.

His wife Marilyn, daughters Sarah and Simone and family have expressed a desire for the Retired Police to have an input in farewelling Gerry.

Service Medals (large) may be worn as a mark of respect to Gerry.

Police gear up for nostalgic chaos that was Beatlemania

SYDNEY: Scenes reminiscent of Beatlemania are expected tomorrow when rock superstar Paul McCartney makes his first in-store record appearance since the days of the Beatles.

Thousands of McCartney’s fans are expected to turn out to try to get a glimpse of – or meet – the former Beatle when he appears for 30 minutes at Brashs’ city store to sign copies of his latest album, Off The Ground.

EMI Music spokesman Tom Enright said police had been enlisted to assist with crowd control.

” We’ll have masses and masses of security guards to make sure that people file in and out of the store correctly, ” Mr Enright said.

” And of course, the store will be barricaded. ”

The control technician of the City of Sydney police, Inspector Paul Moseley, would not reveal how many police would be in attendance.

” There will be police on hand to assist security guards with the maintenance of order in the store, ” he said.

Escapers caught in Goulburn

Two prison escapers had been caught in Goulburn yesterday, after police received a tip that they had boarded a train to Goulburn from Sydney, Constable Paul Moseley, of Goulburn CID said yesterday.

The escapers had been serving six-month sentences at Silverwater Jail, near Parramatta.

One, Mr Anthony Coleman, 20, walked out of the jail early on Monday, and the other, Mr Gary Lee, failed to report back to the centre after being allowed weekend leave last Friday.

Three other prisoners who have escaped since last Friday are still at large.

Mr Raymond Wright, 24, serving 18 years for armed hold-up, cut bars in his cell and climbed the security wall at Goulburn Jail on Tuesday, and escaped.

Mr Barry Millane, 39, serving a life sentence for murder, escaped on Friday night while attending a basketball game at the Sydney Boys’ High School.

Earlier on Friday a young prisoner absconded during his regular cooking class at East Sydney Technical College at Darlinghurst.

Sheep shot

SYDNEY. Sunday. Police are investigating the shooting of 34 merino rams, valued at more than $4,500, on a Goulburn property.

Detective P. Moseley, of Goulburn, said some of the sheep had been killed and others had been crippled and had dragged themselves about until they died.

John Thomas Lawler was born about 1870 at Burrawang (near Berrima) NSW.

John Thomas Lawler was sworn in as a Probationary Constable on the 16^th August 1890. He was confirmed as a Constable on the 16 August 1891. He was promoted to Senior Constable on the 1^st January 1895.

He married Mary Waldron Johnston in 1892 at Moss Vale. At the time he was stationed at Wee Waa. They had five children. One died as an infant. Two boys and two girls survived childhood.

Senior Constable Lawler was first stationed at Moree then Frederickton, Macksville, Gladstone and Port Macquarie (1904).

On the 22^nd October 1912 Senior Constable Lawler was returning to Port Macquarie from the Quarter Sessions at Kempsey. He suffered from an attack of appendicitis but managed to make it to Telegraph Point. He was conveyed to the Hastings District Hospital where he had an operation. The appendicitis was complicated by peritonitis. A clot formed on his brain which paralysed one side of his body. Senior Constable Lawler died at the Hastings District Hospital on the 8^th November 1912. He was 43 years old.

He was the Secretary of the Parents and Citizens Association, a member of the School of Arts Committee and a prominent adherent to the Presbyterian Church.

Senior Constable Lawler was buried on the 9 November 1912 in the West Port Macquarie Cemetery. His funeral was attended by the Mayor of Port Macquarie, the President of the Hastings Shire, the President of the Agricultural Society and Sub-Inspector Edwards. All flags in town were flying half staff and business places and hotels were closed as the procession moved through town.

In 1913 the gratuity for his widow was increased from 280 to £310.
