Retired Sgt 2/C ( NSWPF ) William David HANNA was buried with his wife, Jessie, after his death on 10 December 1953. Jessie predeceased him by 20 years. William ( also known by the nickname of ‘Barlow’ ) was cremated at the Eastern Suburbs Crematorium, Sydney, and his ashes later buried with Jessie. May they forever Rest In Peace together.
WILLIAM is NOT mentioned on the Police Wall of Remembrance *NEED MORE INFO
FURTHER INFORMATION IS NEEDED ABOUT THIS PERSON, THEIR LIFE, THEIR CAREER AND THEIR DEATH.
William David HANNA was the third child born to David HANNA and Susan Anna SMITH. He was born on the 10th March 1884 at Woorooma Station, Moulamein NSW.
After his Boer War service in 1902, the next recorded record of his life was on 12 July 1903 when he reported the death of his brother, John Alfred Hanna at the Jerilderie Hotel NSW Australia.
As a returned soldier he was offered a career in the NSW Police Force, and was appointed as an Ordinary Constable on the 1 April 1906, (information obtained from the NSW Police Gazette dated 11 July 1906).
His service number was 8363 and he was posted to the far North Coast country towns of Murwillumbah and Mullumbimby. A few years later he was posted to Hillston, in far western NSW.
Members of the HANNA family knew him by the nickname of “Barlow”.
On the 31st March 1908 he married Jessie TAMLYN in the Mount Hope district of NSW.
William and Jessie had three children. William David Gregory was born in Condobolin during 1909. The second child born was Grace May Dorothy who was born on 16 December 1911 at Hay NSW. The third child Jessie Margaret was born at Urana NSW on the 14th June, 1913.
When John Alfred Carroll HORGAN moved from Jerilderie NSW in the late 1920’s, to take up a job the GPO in Sydney, he boarded with his uncle, William David HANNA, who was a Crown Sergeant by this time, in the NSW police force. He resided at 71 Rosebery Avenue, Rosebery NSW where it was common for relatives to arrive at his home and stay for whatever time they liked.
A family source advised that Uncle Barlow’s relatives and friends would visit on a Saturday and drink beer in the garage.
When transferred to Sydney NSW William David held postings at Darlinghurst, Redfern, Paddington, Randwick and Botany Police Stations as a Crown Sergeant.
Molly HORGAN recalls that when she was completing her nursing certificate during the 1940’s at St. Vincent’s Hospital, Darlinghurst, she would often receive a visit from Crown Sergeant William HANNA, just to see if she was alright and making sure she had everything she needed.
Molly also knew him as Barlow and stated he was a wonderful caring man.
Crown Sergeant William HANNA was professionally acquainted with Sydney’s major underworld figures of the day. He was also a member of the Orange Lodge and Masonic Lodge.
He was sent to the Hunter Valley Region on several occasions for Bush Fire control and Law and Order at times of the infamous Coal Miners Strikes during the 1930’s.
On one occasion he was severely beaten in a brawl and finished up in Hospital. His family could not get near him because of the number of Chinese residents holding a vigil around his bed side. He had an affiliation with the Chinese population and believed they were good citizens.
William David HANNA owned three houses in Sydney; I have located five addresses that he lived at in Sydney: one a flatette above the Lynx Service Station on the corner of Gardeners Road and Tunstall Ave, Kensington, another residence at 155 Botany Road, Botany, “Akaroa” Mount Street, Randwick,
The Sands Directory of 1917 and 1918 recorded his address as Mort Street, Randwick and his final residence at 71 Rosebery Ave, Rosebery.
My sister Valerie recalls that she and our mother visited Uncle Barlow in Sydney. As children my sisters would be threatened with “uncle Barlow”when they misbehaved.
William David HANNA died aged 70 on the 10 December 1953 at his Rosebery NSW residence.
His death certificate states he was a widower, married at the age of 25 to Jessie TAMLYN at Mount Hope NSW. He died of a carcinoma of the stomach, which he suffered with for two years and was under the care of a Doctor John C. RADFORD.
He was cremated on the 11th December 1953 at the Eastern Suburbs Crematorium. The undertaker was T. Moncrief, Reverend J.A Ross, Church of England Minister conducted the service and C. Higgins was a witness to the cremation.
His ashes were taken to Urana NSW and buried with his wife Jessie TAMLYN. His death certificate gives his daughter Jessie HANNA as the informant of his death and also gave 71 Rosebery Avenue, Rosebery as her address.

Trooper William David HANNA – 22 – 3rd NSW Imperial Bushmen- Boer War 1902
In 1902 William David HANNA then aged 18 enlisted in the Colonial Army to fight against the Boers in South Africa.
William HANNA like so many other young men lied about his age stating he was 20 years old to get into the colonial army. He gave his occupation as “station hand” and was a Trooper in the 3 NSW Imperial Bushmen with the service number of 22.
This contingent of soldiers, arrived in South Africa and when peace was declared, immediately returned to Australia. He was awarded the Queens South Africa Medal, with clasps serving at Belmont, Transvaal, Rhodesia and South Africa, 1902.
Records of The 3rd New South Wales Imperial Bushmen gave the following information:”
In January 1902 a new squadron for the Regiment was formed in Cape Town from Australians already in the country, as was another squadron in February. This brought the strength of the regiment to 500.
About 1,000 men in total are thought to have served in the unit, although it had no more than 600 at any time.
During May 1902 some of the men whose time had expired returned to Australia in the transport Ansonia but many more, and all the officers, volunteered for further service.
200 Victorian Riverina Bushmen, raised by J. S. HORSFALL, reinforced those who stayed. (I believe that his future brother-in-law, John Joseph HORGAN were part of this 200 being from the Riverina Area).
William’s older brother John Alfred HANNA was also serving in South Africa at the time with the 3rd Battalion Australian Commonwealth Horse (NSW)
The regiment spent the remainder of its time serving with William’s column in west Transvaal, until peace was declared in June 1902.
On 12 July 1902 the regiment sailed from Durban, Natal, for Australia, on board the transport Drayton Grange arriving in Sydney on 11 August”

Photograph from todays police tribunal concerning drug by Frenchs forest police. Arriving back from lunch, center former Constable Andrew Neilson, with Barrister Peter Dailly (left) and instructing Solicitor James Hall. Constable Neilson … seriously affected by alcohol. An off-duty police officer was too drunk to remember if he was in Frenchs Forest police station the night the duty officer smelt burning cannabis in the station, the Police Tribunal heard yesterday. Constable Andrew Neilsen told the tribunal he had been drinking jugs of Kamikazes – a cocktail of vodka, tequila and Cointreau – and remembered little of the night. March 1, 1994. Gundy death referred to Royal Commission
SYDNEY: The Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody is to investigate the death of David Gundy, who was shot dead during a police raid on his home in April this year.
Commissioner Hal Wootten, QC, said yesterday that Mr Gundy’s case would be added to the list of deaths to be investigated.
No date has yet been set for the hearing, although it is not expected to start until next year.
It had been expected there would be legal argument as to whether Mr Gundy’s death fell within the commission’s jurisdiction, but yesterday that jurisdiction was not disputed.
In a written submission, counsel for the State Government, Michael Finnane, QC, said armed police involved in the raid had taken up positions at the front and back of Mr Gundy’s house to prevent anyone leaving.
He said in those circumstances the State Government accepted that Mr Gundy and everyone else in the house was “in a real sense in custody of the police officers at the relevant time”.
Counsel assisting the commission, Stephen Norrish, QC, and James Barnett, counsel for Mr Gundy’s widow Doreen Eatts, backed the State Government view.
But counsel for the Police Association, Peter Dailly, said he had been instructed not to make any submission either way.
David Gundy, 32, was killed by a shotgun blast when police from the Special Weapons and Operations Squad raided his home at Marrickville, in Sydney’s inner west, early on April 27.
Detective Sergeant Terry Dawson told the Gundy inquest his shotgun fired accidentally when Mr Gundy attempted to take it from him during a brief struggle.
At the time police were hunting for John Porter, 27, over the shooting of two police officers in the city three days earlier. One of the officers subsequently died.
Porter was not found in the raid on Mr Gundy’s home or at any of the other five Sydney homes raided at the same time. He was arrested in Queensland on May 3 and is now awaiting trial.
At the end of a two-month inquest, a jury found police had acted in the course of their duty and that Mr Gundy’s death was an accident.
Outside the commission, Mr Norrish said the commission would have a brief to investigate the conduct of the inquest and specifically look at some issues not examined by State Coroner Kevin Waller.
He said he could not pre-empt the areas of investigation at this stage. But one possible avenue might be the suggestion that advanced notice of the raid was given to some members of the press.

Kev is remembered, by his many work mates, as having NSW Number plates KEV-000 displayed on his vehicle(s) – an old yellow Chrysler then a gold Holden Statesman at Hurstville.
He is also remembered as being a great bloke by his work mates.
He has been highly respect by all that have worked with him and is being greatly missed by his wife, children, grand children, sister & brother-in-law.
If everyone had Kevin’s integrity and loved and cared for their family and friends as Kevin did, the world would be a much better place.

Detective Sergeant Warren John REID. (Ret’d)
A member of the New South Wales Police Force from 31 October 1966 to 08 October 1998.
Registered Number: 12304.
While this is a sad time for all, today we should take the opportunity to not only grieve for the loss of a friend, colleague, father and grandfather but to also celebrate the wonderful life of Warren John Reid.
Detective Sergeant Warren John Reid served the New South Wales Police Force and the community with outstanding dedication and devotion to duty for 31 years.
Today, we farewell a highly regarded and dedicated officer. Detective Sergeant Warren John Reid sadly passed on 27th May 2020, aged 75 years.
Warren approached life and his career as a police officer with determination, confidence and enthusiasm. He was a policeman through and through, and like many police who take on that role he loved it.
Warren joined the New South Wales Police Force on 31 October 1966. After successfully completing his training at the Police College, he was sworn in as a Probationary Constable. This was an exciting time, being the same year when Robert Menzies retired as Australia’s longest-serving Prime Minister and is succeeded by Harold Holt. Decimalisation; the Australian currency is changed to dollars and cents, with the Australian dollar replacing the Australian pound., Warren was exposed to various facets of policing working at Newtown Police station learning his trade in general duties. A year later, he was confirmed as a Constable and remained at Newtown until 1969
On the 19th November 1969, Warren decided to try his hand in plain clothes and applied for training at No.21 Squad where he undertook Detective training. Shortly after this, Warren was transferred to No. 4 Division at Phillip Street, Sydney performing Criminal Investigation Duties. Warren was promoted to Constable First Class and performed plain clothes work, and no doubt with the older and more experienced Detectives of the time who decided to give him the jobs and reports no one else wanted to do. This was done to see how keen he was. He would have been preparing himself and studying the Crime Acts & proofs in preparation for the notorious Bull Ring. In February 1970, he was given a permanent job as an Investigator.
Between 1970 and 1977, Warren transferred between Phillip Street, North Sydney and Hornsby undertaking criminal investigation duties. In 1973 after undertaking so many years in training, he was officially given a Detective designation. During this period in 1976, Warren was again promoted to the rank of Senior Constable.
It was in 1978 where Warren changed his job roles and worked back in general duties at North Sydney for four years. In 1981, Warren become involved in Licensing Police duties at Central and two years later, continued in Detective’s duties in criminal investigations.
In 1984 after studying the Sergeants promotion books, he was successful in passing the Sergeant 3rd Class examination and in June that year, he was officially promoted to Sergeant 3rd Class.
Warren being a consummate plain clothes investigator wanted to further his passion as an investigator. Later in 1985 he moved across to the Drug Law Enforcement Bureau and worked at Gosford Police District.
Between 1986 and 1997, Detective Sergeant Warren Reid worked at Eastwood, Chatswood, Pennant Hills and finally at Gladesville, he remained to his retirement in 1998, still performing investigative duties.
At the end of his career Detective Sergeant Warren John Reid had provided over 31 years of outstanding service to the NSW Police Force and the community of NSW. His achievements are outstanding and are a tribute to his work ethic and professionalism.
On the 22 April 1983, Warren was awarded the National Service Medal recognising the special status sworn police officers have in protecting the community. Eligibility for this Award requires a minimum of 15 years ethical and diligent service.
His last award was presented on the 29th October 2015 by receiving the National Police Service Medal
To the Reid family members and friends on behalf of the New South Wales Police Force I extend our deepest sympathy for the passing of a remarkable and admired friend and colleague.

Police Ode
As the sun surely sets, dawn will see it arise.
For service above self-demands its own prize.
You have fought the good fight; life’s race has been run, and peace, your reward, for eternity begun.
And we that are left shall never forget.
Rest in peace, friend and colleague, for sun has now set.
We will remember, we will remember.
