LEST WE FORGET

A Warrior’s Farewell

Go now and travel beyond the void
Seek the green column and when you meet
See once more those smiling faces
Hear again laughter and sounds of marching feet

No more the visions of the bloody past
Gone are the nightmares and lingering pain
Soon you will be home at long, long last
United with fallen comrades once again

And when the final roll is called
Another page of history complete
You will rest with brave spirits such as they
In a camp where you will find restful sleep

Go swiftly now and seek your past
Your duty done for all to tell
With pride of who and what you were
And now we bid you a fond farewell

George Mansford – December 2007

Homeward Bound

I saw the shooting star burning so bright
Falling, falling, fading and soon from sight
So distant and yet so near
In its wake, a soldier’s journey so very clear
Duty, sharing, caring, courage and sometimes fear
No longer a mortal in life’s short race
A contented spirit bound for home somewhere in distant space
This fiery trail I saw tonight marks a warrior’s farewell
Leaving behind another legacy of proud deeds to tell

George Mansford © April 2012

The Soldier stood and faced God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as his brass.
Step forward now, Soldier,
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My Church have you been true?’
The soldier squared his shoulders and said,
‘No, Lord, I guess I ain’t.
Because those of us who carry guns,
Can’t always be a saint.
I’ve had to work most Sundays,
And at times my talk was tough.
And sometimes I’ve been violent,
Because the world is awfully rough.
But, I never took a penny,
That wasn’t mine to keep…
Though I worked a lot of overtime,
When the bills got just too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear..
And sometimes, God, forgive me,
I’ve wept unmanly tears.
I know I don’t deserve a place,
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around,
Except to calm their fears
If you’ve a place for me here, Lord,
It needn’t be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don’t, I’ll understand.
There was a silence all around the throne,
Where the saints had often trod.
As the Soldier waited quietly,
For the judgement of his God.
‘Step forward now, you Soldier,
You’ve borne your burdens well.
Walk peacefully on Heaven’s streets,
You’ve done your time in Hell.’

Barry Blanchette – NSW FALLEN POLICE
I remember Carey telling me he was walking downhill at Long Tan. It had been raining and the rubber trees appeared to be glistening. Unfortunately it was not the rubber trees but the NVA & their weapons.
He was wounded and laid for quite some time before being extracted.
RIP.

BAILEY, Susan Olivia Queensland Police Service Senior Constable A well respected police officer and friend to many. Passed away suddenly, 21 August 2018. Susan was a member of the Service for over 10 years. She last served as a Senior Constable at Mount Ommaney station. Family, friends and colleagues are invited to attend Susan's funeral at Mt Gravatt Cemetery and Crematorium at 2pm Friday 31 August 2018.

She loved sports, helping the community and was described as having an infectious laugh and a big heart filled with kindness, always ready to help.

RIP Senior Constable Susan Olivia Bailey????

Ladies and Gents,

VALE

Senior Constable Susan Olivia Bailey 4026013.

At the time of her passing, Susan was attached to Mt Ommaney Station but prior to that, she was a long-serving member of the Fortitude Valley Police family. It has been said that Susan’s smile could light up a room…

On Tuesday 21 August 2018, Susan tragically took her own life. It’s not for us to judge how or why Susan took this path, but it’s probably fair to say right at the end she felt alone.

Sadly, this could not have been further from the truth as attested by the outpouring of love demonstrated in the comments subsequent to our earlier post, but in these situations (and there have been just too many), feelings of being alone, forsaken, isolated, forlorn and abandoned are all too common.

It is incumbent on each and every one of us to do everything in our power to ensure that our friends, our colleagues, OUR blue family members are not left to feel this way. It is up to us to take some time out of our own busy schedules to check on our mates and if required, firmly and unequivocally intervene.

It’s heartbreaking to think that in 2018, in an ever shrinking world being as connected as it ever was, that a feeling of being ‘alone’ can yield such catastrophic results time and time again.

In the meantime, we stand shoulder to shoulder with our Police brethren in their grief. In time we will celebrate how Susan lived rather than how she died.

BLUE HOPE stands ready.

‘Plane Destroyed in Crash Landing – –

The Truscott Flying Club’s plane, Robin, was wrecked when it made a forced landing in a paddock near Hollywood holiday resort ( Lansdowne – 2163 ) on the George’s River on Wednesday. The single occupant of the aircraft, Mr. Leon Creagh, 21, of Botany, a student pilot, was unhurt. Creagh ‘undershot’ the paddock he had selected for a forced landing

and stalled the aircraft to avoid hitting overhead wires. The plane dropped into the paddock in an almost straight and level position from a height of 40 feet and hit the ground with such force that it fell to pieces. Robin, a De Haviland 60 Gipsy Moth, was used for years by Dr. Clyde Fenton on aerial medical trips in the Northern Territory. ( Leon is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernie Creagh, of Gloucester ).

It is reported that Steve collapsed, at work, whilst carrying a type writer in 1980 – 4 years prior to a spot being found on his brain via scans.
Steve was off work for 3 months prior to this ‘spot’ being found.
As a result of this incident and dropping the type writer, the matter was classified as Hurt On Duty ( H.O.D. ) until the Commissioner of Police eventually reversed that decision causing Steve to have to fight for his entitlements during such a hard time in his life.
Being the policeman that he was and dedicated to “the job”, Steve was more concerned and disappointed about NOT being granted his Sergeant’s rank than he was of the Commissioner reversing his H.O.D. status.  Steve had already passed his qualification exam but because he now found himself on ‘Light Duties’, he was deemed not able to fulfil the role of Sergeant and thus, was not promoted past the rank of Detective Senior Constable.
Steve, having being diagnosed with the blood clot at age 34 and having Served NSWPF for 35 years, was eventually Medically Retired from NSWPF, aged 51,  on 4 October 2001 due to his continuing health decline.
During his early Retired years, Steve worked at the local Police Boys Club with the Bicycle Safety program, which he developed, with the RTA ( now RMS ) providing the push bikes and helmets that he used at local schools to teach the young students bicycle safety on our streets.  Since Steve could no longer provide this service due to his illness, no-one has taken up the slack to provide this useful service to the local youth.
Steve, due to his severe debilitating illness, spent his last few years in the full care of his wife, Lorraine.
Steve, in his healthier years was a strong swimmer and represented NSWPF in the Police Olympic pool at Narrabeen and won Gold.
May Steve forever Rest In Peace.
