WINDY GALE
Another sailor’s ship has set sail.
His friends all knew him as Windy Gale.
A family man who cared for his mates.
As a seaman, he had all that it takes.
Alan served his country but never stood down.
A more compassionate man could not be found.
He was always willing and loyal to a tee,
And he never forgot his love for the sea.
He was a tireless worker who gave his all,
To any ex-service folk within his beck and call.
His tribute to the fallen is quite legendary.
Posting their details so they’re here for posterity.
Alan will be missed by all those who knew him.
But we know to which port, he will be sailing.
All we can do now is pray for fair weather.
Till the time comes when we can all be together.
Bill Charlton.
A mate.
4/12/2022

This morning I had a visit from Ray James and Alan Gale who are members of the Vietnam Veterans Association of Australia – Macarthur Sub Branch.
Like myself, both Ray an Alan are also ex NSW Police Officers.
They presented Bujustu with a certificate of appreciation for sponsoring the Vietnam Veterans Macarthur Branch.
I try to do around 7K a year in sponsorships, mainly to Macarthur community groups, schools and sports teams. This is one cause I did not hesitate for a second to sponsor.
If you are a business owner looking for a worthy cause to support, get in contact with these guys.

Did the Rural Fire Service cover up a fatal fire?

THE Rural Fire Service is being investigated by a coroner over claims it covered up suspicions that a fatal bushfire was started by one of its own volunteers.

THE Rural Fire Service is being investigated by a coroner over claims it covered up suspicions that a fatal bushfire was started by one of its own volunteers.

Motorist Ronald Gillett died and 13 homes at Abernethy in the Hunter Valley were destroyed in one of the state’s worst bushfires which a previous inquest found was deliberately lit.

Yesterday as he reopened the inquest on the basis of fresh evidence, deputy state coroner Carl Milovanovich said he would be investigating whether there had been a “conspiracy of silence”.

He said the primary focus of the new inquest was whether there had been a “cover up” over the cause of the blaze in October 2002.

One of the fresh witnesses to be called is Brendan Hokin, a member of the local Cessnock Bushfire Brigade who had been charged two days before the fire with deliberately lighting a fire that threatened Pokolbin.

He then went to fight the fire.

Hokin, then 24, pleaded guilty to arson and was jailed for 12 months with a non-parole period of four months.

He has denied any involvement in the Abernerthy blaze, which was the result of two separate fires.

But Mr Milovanovich was not told about Hokin when he held the first inquest in 2004.

After that inquest, RFS investigator Ken Hepplewhite told ICAC that he had told someone he “thought there may have been a cover-up (about the fatal fire) but that he was not part of it.”

Bushfire volunteers who were on the two Cessnock fire trucks on a training exercise when the fire started have also been interviewed by police – some for the first time – and will also be called to give evidence.

Police had taken statements from 34 new witnesses, Sergeant Julie Tillott, assisting the coroner, told Westmead Coroners’ Court.

She said the inquest had been reopened following allegations made by a local resident, Garry Price, who almost lost his home in the fire, and a reinvestigation by police.

Businessman Mr Gillett, 55, was trapped in his car and killed when the flames swept across the road through Aberdare State Forest after he was turned back at a roadblock.

Outside court yesterday, his son Barclay Gillett said he he hoped the new inquest would “get to the bottom of what happened”.

Mr Price flagged that he would be asking for Mr Hepplewhite to be called as a witness.

The inquest was adjourned to October 13 in Newcastle.

Alan Millward

4th November 2022

Passed peacefully at home with family.

A treasured husband of Jan.

Devoted father to Luke, Charlene and Angie.

Proud grandfather to Lawrence and Paul.

Aged 58 Years

As per Alan’s wishes, a private family service & cremation was held at the Coffs Harbour Crematorium, Karangi, NSW.

Hi All
please see below from Alan Millward’s wife –
Hello everyone, this is Al’s wife, Jan.
Due to very last minute unforeseen circumstances, Monday’s Memorial Service will no longer be held at the racecourse.
In lieu of this our family will be down at Diggers Beach, from 2pm Monday afternoon.
It’s a pretty special spot for us as that’s where Alan and I renewed our wedding vows for our 20th wedding anniversary…which was an unbelievable 18 years ago now. My God, time goes by so fast!
You’re all welcome to join us. Bring along a chair and a choccy milk or lemon squash, or whatever your choice of poison is…I’ll have my cup of tea! If you want something to nibble on, you’ll have to bring that as well I’m sorry to say, as I really don’t think letting me in the kitchen is a good thing right now…I’d probably get distracted and burn the place down. We’ll sit around and share a few stories and celebrate Al’s life and love.
To all those who have contributed to the Go Fund Me thingy that Charlene created for Alan’s Memorial, we will contact you personally over the next few days. We do not want anyone to feel we have misled you and will return your donations if that is what you would like.
To each and every person here, thank you from the bottom of hearts, we are so grateful for the outpouring of love and support you have all offered. We will all miss Alan in our own ways.

EXCLUSIVE:

Tragedy as a dedicated cop and mother of two 12-year-old twin girls ends her own life sending shockwaves through police ranks

  • Much-loved senior female officer Audra Jaeger died at home on October 28
  • Understood the senior constable was on stress leave from Wollongong posting
  • 50-year-old was a mother of two 12-year-old twin girls and was found at home
  • Her sudden death is the second suicide by a NSW police officer in two months

A ‘dedicated’ policewoman and mother of twin girls has ended her own life, rocking the New South Police force just two months after another officer also suicided.

Senior Constable Audra Jaeger, 50, who died on October 28, leaves behind 12-year-old twin girls, Harper and Evie.

Daily Mail Australia understands Ms Jaeger, who served in Sydney‘s eastern suburbs and at Wollongong, was on stress leave and died at home.

Ms Jaeger joined the police service at 28 and served for 21 years, working at Bondi and Waverley stations, before moving to Wollongong, south of Sydney.

She also worked at PCYCs in Sutherland and Lake Illawarra and took part in cancer charity work as part of a Cops Against Cancer cycle team.

A former colleague, Dianna Mackay, has started an official fundraiser to raise money for Ms Jaeger’s two daughters.

She shared a heartbreaking photo of the twins in front of a giant love heart drawn in the sand.

‘Senior Constable Audra Jaeger sadly passed away on 28 October 2022. She is survived by her twin daughters, Harper and Evie, who are both just twelve years old,’ Ms Mackay wrote.

‘Audra was an amazing person, friend, work colleague, partner, mumma and daughter.’

Ms Jaeger was ‘much loved by everyone who knew her’ Ms Mackay said.

‘Audra lit up the room no matter where she was; at work, at home or at play.

‘[She] was a massive beacon of light and burst of positive energy and even with her passing, her shining light will never be extinguished.’

One donor wrote ‘Such a beautiful person gone too soon, rest easy Aud.’

Tributes poured in from colleagues and loved ones, many through the charity, NSW Police Legacy.

It shared the tragic news on its social media pages on Wednesday: ‘We’re sorry, family, but we have more heartbreaking news.’

A NSW paramedic who had a chance encounter with her a week before her death said Ms Jaeger was ‘dedicated’ and friendly.

‘[She was a] dedicated Emergency Services colleague, our paths crossed many times for many different reasons and Audra always greeted me with a smile followed by a quick chat, we even had a chat at a restaurant the week before her passing, if only we knew, now it’s another sad loss that may have been prevented,’ he wrote.

‘RIP sister in blue,’ a former sergeant wrote.

‘Audra was always a pleasure to work with at the PCYC,’ a Sydney mum posted.

‘So so sad… a truly lovely person’ another woman wrote.

The tragedy comes less than two months after the body of off-duty male officer, Tanzeel Iftikhar Bashir, 23, was found in the Royal National Park.

Constable Bashir was found in the Royal National Park, south of Sydney, at about 12.40am on Saturday September 3 ( 2022 ).

Police had launched a search for the young off-duty officer at about 10.30pm on September 2 after concerns were raised for his welfare.

His colleagues found the Bankstown Police Area Command officer the following morning.

All funds raised for Audra Jaeger’s twins will be put into a trust for Harper and Evie Jaeger, and will be given to the girls when they turn 21.

The fundraiser has the modest target of $10,000 and had raised $2,655 by Wednesday evening.

Man charged after two drownings

SYDNEY: A man who hired out an allegedly unseaworthy boat to five men, two of whom drowned when it sank in 1982, has been charged over the incident.

Mr Rodney Ernest Frank Steventon, of Burwood, in Sydney, has been summonsed to appear in the St James Court of Petty Sessions on September 24.

At Glebe Coroner’s Court on Friday, an inquest into the deaths of the two men heard that Mr Steventon had been summonsed on a charge alleging that on or about July 24, 1982, he had sent the vessel Fortuna out in an unseaworthy condition, endangering the lives of the master and crew.

Coroner Margaret Sleeman found that the master, Mr Angikasi Tine, and engineer, Mr Souhial Shami, had drowned on September 9, 1982, when the Fortuna turned over and sank east of Port Stephens, north of Newcastle.

Sergeant Hilary Hansen of the water police said that the 15-metre diesel steel fishing boat had been owned by the Mutual Acceptance Corporation and leased by Mr Steventon.

The boat’s crank case had broken down a day after leaving Sydney for Fiji on July 24, 1982, and the vessel had been towed into Port Stephens.

It had set off for Fiji again on September 7, but had sunk in rough seas early on September 9.

A distress signal had been sent by the master and the engineer, but only the three other crew members had made it to a life raft, to be picked up by a Japanese freighter several hours later.

Sergeant Hansen said that the report of the Marine Operations Division included recommendations on shortcomings of the boat’s life raft, instability in the vessel and lack of survey certificates.

It had been suggested in the report that the matter be referred to a Court of Marine Inquiry.
