Police gear up for nostalgic chaos that was Beatlemania

SYDNEY: Scenes reminiscent of Beatlemania are expected tomorrow when rock superstar Paul McCartney makes his first in-store record appearance since the days of the Beatles.

Thousands of McCartney’s fans are expected to turn out to try to get a glimpse of – or meet – the former Beatle when he appears for 30 minutes at Brashs’ city store to sign copies of his latest album, Off The Ground.

EMI Music spokesman Tom Enright said police had been enlisted to assist with crowd control.

” We’ll have masses and masses of security guards to make sure that people file in and out of the store correctly, ” Mr Enright said.

” And of course, the store will be barricaded. ”

The control technician of the City of Sydney police, Inspector Paul Moseley, would not reveal how many police would be in attendance.

” There will be police on hand to assist security guards with the maintenance of order in the store, ” he said.

Escapers caught in Goulburn

Two prison escapers had been caught in Goulburn yesterday, after police received a tip that they had boarded a train to Goulburn from Sydney, Constable Paul Moseley, of Goulburn CID said yesterday.

The escapers had been serving six-month sentences at Silverwater Jail, near Parramatta.

One, Mr Anthony Coleman, 20, walked out of the jail early on Monday, and the other, Mr Gary Lee, failed to report back to the centre after being allowed weekend leave last Friday.

Three other prisoners who have escaped since last Friday are still at large.

Mr Raymond Wright, 24, serving 18 years for armed hold-up, cut bars in his cell and climbed the security wall at Goulburn Jail on Tuesday, and escaped.

Mr Barry Millane, 39, serving a life sentence for murder, escaped on Friday night while attending a basketball game at the Sydney Boys’ High School.

Earlier on Friday a young prisoner absconded during his regular cooking class at East Sydney Technical College at Darlinghurst.

Man shot in head in Cabramatta ambush

A man ambushed in his car and shot in the head in western Sydney remained in a critical condition today.

The man was driving his car along Hughes Street, Cabramatta, at 2.45pm (AEST) yesterday when a person ran up to the car and fired shots at him, police said.

The 30-year-old was shot a number of times, including in the head.

A woman in the car was uninjured, Cabramatta Police Superintendent Alan Becke said.

The man was treated at the scene by ambulance officers before being taken to an undisclosed hospital where he underwent surgery.

He was still in a critical condition today.

Police had spoken to witnesses and canvassed the area in search of the offender.

Investigators appealed for anyone who was in the vicinity of Hughes Street, or who might have witnessed the incident, to contact Cabramatta Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Wednesday 9 September 1987, page 10

Paroled man charged over strangle death

BOWRAL: A man on parole after serving a jail term for malicious assault was charged in Bowral Local Court yesterday with the murder of a 43-year old woman.

Mr Gregory Ronald Keaton, 32, of Moss Vale, is charged with murdering Ms Patricia Ann Murray at Moss Vale on Saturday.

Detective Sergeant Alan Becke told the court that Mr Keaton went to a hotel last Friday and, after midnight, followed the woman to her home.

An argument developed between the two because he believed Ms Murray was going to report him and his de-facto wife to the Housing Commission and Department of Social Security.

Sergeant Becke said that during the argument Mr Keaton strangled Ms Murray.

It was understood Ms Murray had said that Mr Keaton, though employed, was receiving unemployment benefits and that his de-facto wife was receiving a single-parent benefit.

Mr Keaton was remanded in custody to appear in Moss Vale Local Court on Monday.

The court had been told that Mr Keaton was on parole, having been convicted in 1982 of malicious assault inflicting actual bodily harm to have sexual intercourse.

His de-facto wife and two of her five children were in court.

Condolences to Therese, Tammy & Wendy.

98-year-old-man naked, unconscious

The frail victim was found semi-conscious with an injury to the forehead and could barely communicate with police.

The house in Dewhurst St, Coledale, was placed under police guard until crime scene police could investigate.

Meanwhile the elderly man was listed in a serious condition in Tamworth Base Hospital.

A close family friend found the victim shortly after 12pm when she forced open the front door, which appeared to have been barricaded with a chair.

Furniture was strewn across the floor, vases were knocked over and chairs tipped up.

Living alone, the man had not been in contact with friends since early in the week, and it’s possible he could have lay injured since Thursday.

Tamworth police sergeant Kevin Mcauliffe said the elderly man had an injury described as a contusion to the head and it was not known if he was dehydrated or had suffered any other injuries.

The contents of the lounge room were dishevelled, with police suspecting the man could have been assaulted in his home.

“There’s bits and pieces of furniture moved around in the lounge area and vases have been tipped over,” Sergeant Mcauliffe said.

He said a stool was placed behind the front door in a way suggesting it had been wedged to stop it from opening.

He could not confirm how the victim was injured or if anyone had broken in, however detectives are investigating the possibility of forced entry.

Sergeant Mcauliffe said it did not appear as though any property had been stolen, although again this could not be confirmed.

Police tried to interview the victim at the scene however he seemed confused and had difficulty speaking.

“If he has been there since Thursday he’s doing well,” Sergeant Mcauliffe said.

“Either someone has broken into the house and assaulted him or he’s had some kind of a turn and was thrashing about the place,” he said.

Scotty, so long ago mate, solo cycle course in the middle of winter 1998; rain, sleet, snow and just a little bit of sunshine; and, most of all, four weeks with a great bunch of blokes.
All of us, a lot younger then, in what seems like a very different time; when a pair of king gee overalls, a standard issue leather jacket, some elastic sided baxter boots, a pair of leggings almost identical to those worn by the light horse in WW1, and whatever gear you could borrow from one of the certified cyclists back at work, were considered safe enough to wear as we scooted around the country side.
Precious memories, even more precious now.
Whatever the cause, I’m so sorry to hear you couldn’t stay around. Whenever our paths crossed, you always had a smile. May that continue to be the case wherever you find yourself now.
RIP my friend.

Arthur Norman NEVILLE, Arthur NEVILLE, Supterindent NEVILLE
A wonderful Retired Police Day and BBQ at Mona Vale PS yesterday ( Thu. 7 Sept. 2017 ) compliments of the Northern Beaches LAC under the command of Supt Dave Darcy # 20783 and his team including Pat Chipchase # 8781202, Jason Christopher # 31625 and Damon Flakelar # 31418.
Of particular interest was young Probationary Constable Jake, on his 2nd day in the job, in a photo taken with our oldest Northern Beaches RPA Member, Arthur Neville # 5823 ( who was a Boss at Mona Vale in the 1980s ) and Supt Dave Darcy.
All those attending were presented with a ‘Retired’ lapel pin.
Thanks to Supt Darcy and all who were on hand to make this memorable event possible.
