Sergeant Patrick William KELLY. Born Sydney 1884. Died 11/6/1922 Coast Hospital from ‘Enteric Fever‘ (Typhoid fever) aged 38. Joined 1904, 18 years Service. The attached link is to his obituary is all I can find about this man who died whilst still serving.

Some background. The Coast Hospital (established around 1882 to isolate and treat patients with infectious diseases) was particularly valuable during the bubonic plague in Sydney of 1900 and then again when soldiers returning from Europe brought the influenza virus back in 1919. The Coast Hospital became Prince Henry Hospital in 1934. In 2001 services were transferred to Prince of Wales Hospital, Sydney and the hospital site became available for residential use.

THE LATE SERGEANT PATRICK WILLIAM KELLY.

Sergeant Patrick William Kelly, of No. 1 (Clarence-street) Station of the N.S.W. Police, died at the Coast Hospital on the 11th inst. of enteric fever, at the early age of 38 years. The deceased, who was a native of Sydney, was the eldest son of the late Mr. John Kelly and of Mrs. Mary Kelly, of County Galway, Ireland, and residents of Ultimo for over 35 years.

Sergeant Kelly joined the police force in 1904, and rendered fine work to the department, gaining the confidence of the Inspector-General and other officers, and the esteem of all associated with him. The deceased was an inmate of the hospital for only one week, when he was called to his reward. He was attended spiritually during his illness by the Rev. Fathers McHugh and Quinn (Maroubra), who administered the last rites of the Church.

The interment took place at the Catholic Cemetery, Rookwood, on Friday, the 13th inst., the funeral leaving the residence of his mother, 79 Quarry-street, Ultimo.

The cortege was headed by the Police Band, followed by about 100 uniformed and 50 plain clothes men and detectives, who proceeded with the other mourners to the graveside.

The Rev. Father J. Troy (Diocesan Inspector of Schools) officiated, and, in referring in feeling terms of the remarkable courage and fortitude shown by Sergeant Kelly during his last hours, said he was typical of those who comprise the splendid force of police that the State of New South Wales is justly proud; and he took this public opportunity of expressing his appreciation of the members of that great body, who were the custodians of peace and the guardians of life and property.

The chief mourners were his mother, Miss H. Kelly (sister), Mr. J. J. Kelly (brother), Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Finn and family (Carlton), Mr. and Mrs. J. J.White and family (Erskineville), Mr. J. Farraher, uncle (Redfern), Mrs. Goodridge (Moss Vale), Mr. and Mrs. Tom Mack (Moss Vale), Mr. and Mrs. Spencer (Taralga ), also at the graveside were Superintendents Park (representing the Inspector-General of Police), Bannan, ex-Superintendents Brooks and McLean, Inspectors Turbet, Long, Robertson, Pauling, King, Mankey, and Mr. John Robinson (ex-local auditor, Commonwealth Audit Office, Sydney ). The pall-bearers consisted of six comrades of the deceased from the foot and water police. — R.I.P.

It is with deep sadness that I advise Sergeant Second Class Bruce Earl Magee, Registered No. 12500, Class 110 passed away at 1.13am this morning at Bathurst Base Hospital. His family were with him and requested their thanks to all those that have passed on their thoughts in respect to Bruce.
There will be a private funeral, and there is to be a Memorial Service at a later date, that date will be advised when it is known.

I remember Bruce as a Detective Senior Constable at Fairfield ( 34 Division ) Police Station back around 1977 – 79.

He was a really nice and approachable bloke.

JUFC to wear black armbands as mark of respect for former player Garin Collins

Joondalup United is saddened to hear news of the passing of former midfielder Garin Collins earlier this week.

Edinburgh native Collins was an integral part of the JUFC team which won the 2014 State League Division Two title without losing a game.

Dubbed ‘The Invincibles’ for their achievement, the talented side conquered the Division at the first attempt following their promotion from the Amateur League, and Collins was the Coach’s Player of the Year.

“Garin was different class the year we went unbeaten in State League Division Two and he easily won our Coach’s Player of the Year,” said JUFC NPL Operations Manager Rudy Proctor, who was part of the first team coaching staff at the time.

“His quality on the ball and will to win were on another level; when he crossed that white line all that mattered to him was winning and he dragged his team mates along with him.

“He would run through a brick wall for his team mates and coaching staff to get three points.”

As well as JUFC, Collins played for a number of Perth clubs, including Floreat Athena, ECU Joondalup, Quinns and Cockburn City, during an excellent career at State League level.

“We are all gutted at JUFC, and we especially gutted for his young children and his family in both Scotland and Australia,” said Proctor.

“Our thoughts are also with his best mate and current JUFC player Ross Edwards, I have no idea how those close to him must be feeling but we are all thinking of them and will do what we can to make things easier in any way possible.

“Rest in peace, Garin, you will forever be a JUFC Invincible.”

JUFC’s NPL first team will wear black armbands as a tribute to Collins for this Saturday’s game against Bayswater City, and everyone at the club offers their condolences to his family and friends.

West Australian football is in shock following the sudden death of the likeable Scot Garin Collins.
The left-sided frontman first played for Sorrento in 1994 and over the years turned out for such clubs as ECU Joondalup, Bassendean Caledonian, Floreat Athena, Mandurah City, Wanneroo City, Joondalup United, Canning City and Quinns winning many awards along the journey.
He was an integral part of ‘The Invincibles’ when Joondalup United clinched the 2014 State League D2 championship without defeat – after shifting from the amateur ranks the season prior. Proof of his impact came in the form of the Coach’s Player of the Year award.
“His quality on the ball and will to win were on another level,” said Rudy Proctor, Joodalup’s NPL Operations Manager.

A Hibbees fan from Edinburgh, Garin passed away earlier this week – he had turned 38 last month.

JUFC’s NPL first team will wear black armbands against Bayswater City this Saturday.

The Western Australian football family offers its deepest sympathy to Garin’s family and friends.

Feeling safe on campus

‘Look out for the vest: we’ll do the rest’ could be the motto of the new contract security staff who are now patrolling the Crawley campus.

The University now employs security guards 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They wear blue vests with bands of red and white checks to ensure staff and students notice them and know they can ask them for help.

Garin Collins, a UWA staff duty officer and field supervisor, said there was a fine line between providing a presence and unnecessarily interrupting people as they work.

“But we want everybody to know we are here to help,” he said. “I think, at first, people weren’t approaching us because they thought we were parking inspectors!”

The contract staff constantly patrol the campus four at a time – in two pairs. They are part of a complete security upgrade being implemented by Bob Leaver.

Mr Leaver has been the Manager of Security for 18 months and is completing a new master plan for the University.

“It started with a lot of staff training, then we got the Wilsons Security contract guards on board,” he said. “We are in the process of creating improved response services and hoping to get an electric vehicle to make our night time escort service quicker and more efficient and enhance response capabilities to incidents and emergencies.”

The most visible change is that security guards are now also on duty during daylight hours. There were only night shifts before the new regime.

“We’ll find that our incident statistics will increase,” Mr Leaver said. “But that doesn’t necessarily mean more crime on campus. It means we are detecting more incidents and dealing more efficiently with crime and problems.”

He said the guards recently made a citizen’s arrest of a man who was trying to break into a vending machine near the Maths building recently.

“The evening patrol noticed the locks had been tampered with and they assumed whoever had done that would come back. So we put on extra patrols the next day and the man came back with a drill to drill out the lock – and he was arrested.

“That could not have happened last year, without security staff working in daylight hours,” Mr Leaver said.

The contract staff provide the foot patrols; the UWA staff supervise and help them, and are available for emergencies.

Mr Collins said he thought students were slowly getting used to seeing the uniformed guards around the campus and even inside some areas such as libraries. “At first, it was like seeing police walking through your work area. You ask: What’s happening? Now they realise nothing’s happening, but I hope they are feeling safe.”

Mr Leaver said the new guards were high quality employees who had a focus on customer service, had good education and experience, and were able to deal with any incidents.

He said he anticipated that the new security plan would eventually include improved closed circuit television cameras, ‘Help’ points and lighting to make the campus even safer.

Policeman mourned after fatal crash in Shepparton

A POLICEMAN has been killed on his way to work in a tragic car crash in Shepparton.

Acting Sergeant Gavin Sproule, 37, from Kialla, was driving to work when he collided with another car at the intersection of Verney Road and Nightingale Way just after 9pm on Saturday.

He was flown to hospital but died on arrival. The Shepparton-based officer is being mourned by loved ones.

Inspector Troy Hargadon paid tribute to Acting Sergeant Sproule.

“Gavin was a well respected and valued member,” Insp Hargadon said.

“He had recently spent a period of time carrying out duties as a supervisor and he was well on his way to achieving his goal of promotion.

“He was much loved and respected by all. He is remembered by his wife and children.

“Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this tragic time.

“It will have an impact on our local members who do a wonderful job and who have lost a colleague and a friend.

“Victoria Police will continue to support our members in these tough times.”

Friend Annette Newman wrote on Facebook: “Rest in Peace Gavin. You will be sorely missed by everyone that knew you.”

“You will be forever missed but never forgotten. Will always love ya mate you were one in a million! And I was very lucky to call you my friend,” read another post.

A Police Association spokesman said it would provide support to Act Sgt Sproule’s family and colleagues

“The Police Association is deeply saddened by the death of one of our members, who was killed while on his way to working night shift in Shepparton,” a spokesman said.

“We offer our deepest condolences to his family, and we have reached out to them, and to the member’s colleagues who attended the scene, to offer any assistance and support they require.

“A senior Police Association representative is in Shepparton today to help guide affected members through this tragic time.”

The female driver of the other car was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Investigators believe that a car travelling on Nightingale Way turned right onto Verney Road and collided with Act Sgt Sproule’s ute.

The vehicle flipped and came to a rest on its roof.

Off-duty police officer killed in Shepparton smash a ‘true legend’

A police officer killed in a car accident while on his way to work on Saturday night has been remembered as a “true legend”.

Acting Sergeant Gavin Sproule, a member of Shepparton Highway Patrol, was on his way to night shift when a car collided with his Toyota ute about 9pm.

The Kialla man, a father of two young children, was airlifted to Melbourne but died on arrival.

Shepparton Inspector Troy Hargadon paid tribute to his colleague on Monday afternoon.

“He was vibrant and well-respected member who is sadly missed,” he told reporters.

“[He] has been a local member for a number of years having worked in Shepparton and most recently in an acting in the role as a supervisor.”

Inspector Hargadon said a number of officers who had attended the scene on Saturday night were friends and colleagues of Mr Sproule.

“It is a significant event when people lose their lives on our roads and no doubt it always has an impact on the wider community,” he said.

“The complexity for us is that it is a colleague, and unfortunately, some of his peers and his friends, they responded to the horrible scene we were faced with on Saturday evening. They did so in such a manner that was outstanding and [I’m] certainly extremely proud of the efforts that they put in on that evening.”

Inspector Hargadon also praised the efforts of other emergency services and the greater community who provided the support on Saturday night at the scene of the crash.

He said officers who were traumatised by the incident were receiving ongoing care and counselling.

Mr Sproule, 37, has been remembered as a much-loved officer, with The Police Association said they were “deeply saddened” by the tragedy.

“We offer our deepest condolences to his family, and we have reached out to them, and to the member’s colleagues who attended the scene, to offer any assistance and support they require.

“A senior Police Association representative is in Shepparton today to help guide affected members through this tragic time.”

Tributes have poured in on social media for Mr Sproule, who was described as “a really great bloke” and “true legend” who would be sadly missed.

TRIBUTES are flowing for Wimmera man Gavin Sproule.

Gavin, 37, died after a car crash at Shepparton on Saturday night.

He had worked as an acting sergeant for the Victoria Police, based in the Goulburn Valley, for about 10 years.

Gavin grew up at Pimpinio before his father Paul took the reins as the police officer at Minyip.

Older brother Brad Sproule said Gavin was like any little brother.

“He was very adventurous, very boisterous, full on, flat out. But then he also had a very soft side,” he said. “He was very caring and loving.”

Brad said Gavin took those traits into fatherhood and became an exceptional parent.

Gavin and wife Jayne have two sons, Max and Beau.

“He and Jayne were a really good couple. There are always highs and lows in relationships and they just got through everything.They worked together,” Brad said.

Brad said Gavin wanted to follow in their father’s footsteps as a police officer, but tried several jobs before he embarked on that journey.

“He was a farm hand and did a bit of truck driving, but he loved the police force,” he said.

Gavin started his policing career in Horsham and later worked in Shepparton.

“When he was younger he pushed a lot of boundaries but he ended up being a very respected and very good police officer,” Brad said.

“He loved the job and was good at it.”

The life of Shepparton police Acting Sergeant Gavin Sproule will be celebrated at a funeral service in Mooroopna on Monday.

Acting Sgt Sproule was killed when his car and another vehicle collided at the intersection of Verney Rd and Nightingale Way just after 9pm — on Saturday, February 17.

Earlier this week colleagues remembered Mr Sproule as a ‘‘vibrant and respected’’ man.

‘‘He’s a brother, he’s a father, he’s a husband, and he’s a valued member of our organisation,’’ Shepparton police Inspector Troy Hargadon said.

‘‘To lose a life at any circumstance is a tragic event, and it has a significant impact on anybody, whether it’s a member of the police force, or a community member.

‘‘I’d like to thank the community for their support. Please stick with us, we are here, we are dedicated to serving you. We will continue to do that day in, day out, regardless of the circumstances.’’

Insp Hargadon said traffic diversions would be in place on Monday with vehicles expected to be diverted on Echuca Rd, Mooroopna.

‘‘Respectfully, we ask the community to be mindful,’’ he said.

Hundreds of people are expected to attend the full police honours service including police horses, motorbikes, vehicles and a pipe band.

Acting Sgt Sproule had been stationed at Shepparton and Mooroopna, for a number of years, and also had connections to the Cobram and Wangaratta forces.

The funeral service will be held at the Sir Ian McLennan Community Centre on Monday, February 26 commencing at 1pm.

A private cremation will follow.

Paul is described as a nice bloke who was a quietly spoken gentleman.

He was a very thorough and meticulous Detective. A Registered Psychiatric Nurse before he joined. Always had a ciggie and cuppa in his hand when out the front of Newcastle Police Station with a brief in hand. Happily frequented the Grand Hotel Newcastle on many a Friday afternoon. A pleasure to work alongside and somehow always reminded us youngsters that we drove too fast! A real good cop who could tell a good yarn. He has many friends in the Newcastle area who, along with his family will miss him dearly.

I’m sorry to hear that Paul has left this world. I knew Paul well both during his nursing days and also for a time after he joined the police force. I found him to be a thorough gentleman with a beautiful soul. He had a special gift for being able to communicate with people of all types and this saw him do well in both professions. He also had a fabulous sense of humour and I shared many a funny time with him. He will be missed, but never forgotten. Lifelong St George resident John William Baxter died peacefully in his sleep at his Rockdale home on Saturday morning aged 92.

‘Jack’ was well-known in the community for his love of golf and played at Kogarah Golf Club every week until he was no longer able.

Mr Baxter was born in Bexley on January 24,1926 as the fifth of six children.

He attended Hurstville Boys High School before enlisting in the Royal Australian Air Force at age 18.

Mr Baxter served in the RAF for two years achieving the rank of Leading Aircraftman (LAC).

He saw action in Borneo, where he was wounded by a gunshot to the leg and spent six months recovering in Jervis Bay.

Mr Baxter met his future-wife Valerie soon after and the pair were married January, 1957.

He served in the NSW Police Force for 35 years, retiring in 1981 after being injured in a serious car accident. The sergeant served at Regent Street, Philip Street, Darlinghurst and Maroubra commands.

Mr Baxter also played rugby union with St George Rugby Union Football Club (now known as Southern Districts), delivering a man of the match performance – his final appearance in the league – in the club’s then only premiership victory, against Gordon.

The football highlights didn’t end there, with the forward captaining a NSW Police side against the New Zealand police team in a 1958 interdominion.

Mr Baxter was also known to play a friendly spot of tennis with local legend Ken Rosewall.

He also coached junior cricket at Arncliffe Cricket Club in the 1970s.

Mr Baxter was a voracious reader and his love of books was rivalled only by his joy in sharing a glass of wine with his wife.

The Baxters raised their children in the same Rockdale house they lived in for 53 years.

Mr Baxter is survived by two children, three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He will be farewelled in a funeral service at Rockdale Guardian Funerals (374 Princes Highway, Banksia) at 10.30am on Friday, February 9.

On Wednesday we celebrated the life of Eric Mahoney. It was great to catch up to work mates from years gone by.
I was speaking to Eric’s father who said it made him very happy to see many if Eric’s work mates at the funeral and wake. I cannot write in words the emotion in his words.

Whilst at the wake we were discussing the celebrants words, ” we have now, we do not know what lays ahead, miso take the time to catch up with family and friends.”

With that in mind Lee Howell, Donna Sedgmen, David Little, Garry Law, Manny Rivera, Steve Mann and myself discussed organising a get together.

The location we came up with is the Wollongong surf leisure resort. This is a resort with cabins, caravans and camping options. Across the road is the Towradgi beach hotel which has a good bistro/restaurant.

The plan is to book in at the resort for Saturday 26th May, catch up in the afternoon and cross the road to the hotel for dinner.

The accommodation has various options, sharing will cost $50 for the night.

There is plenty of time to organise this day, not compulsory to stay over and I’m sure if the Occasion arises there will be some where to put your head down if you do stay.

Hope to see as many old friends as possible.
