5′ 10 1/4″ tall, 12 stone in weight, Hazel eyes, Brown hair and Medium Complexion.  He was a native of Campsie, NSW.

He was single at the time.

He was previously employed as a Driveway Attendant for 2 months and a Butcher for 5.5 years.

He was first married on the 1 April 1961 and divorced on 8 November 1976.

He remarried on 28 January 1978.

*He lost 1 month Seniority between being a Probationary Constable – Constable as he failed the Arithmetic component.

He failed his Constable 1/c exam five times between 1962 – 1966 and Passed the exam on 29 August 1967.

He passed his Sgt 3/c Exam on 16 May 1974.

He obtained his First Aid Certificate and held the Intermediate Star in Life Saving.

He passed his Police Motor Cycle course on 9 December 1965 and High Powered Solo Riders course on 8 July 1966.

He was found competent to drive High Speed Manual transmission Police vehicles on 14 June 1967.

On 29 November 1962 he received a Neglect of Duty charge against his record ” in that ( on 14 February 1963 ) he failed to attend Court and arrange for the attendance of witnesses at proceedings against two persons for traffic offences. ”

DEATH OF SERGEANT 2nd CLASS JOHN BAILEY (1841 to 21 November 1887) No. 1989

John Bailey was born in 1841 in Kilkenny, Ireland. He emigrated to Australia and married Ellen Heffernan at Hunters Hill in 1869. They had eight children together between 1870 and 1881.

John Bailey was sworn in as a Supernumerary Constable of the NSW Police Force on the 10 August 1870. He was promoted to Senior Constable on the 1 April 1876 and Sergeant 2^nd Class on the 1 January 1882.

Sergeant Bailey died on the 21 November 1887. He was stationed at Redfern at the time. He was buried at the Rookwood Catholic Cemeteries and Crematoria, Mortuary 1 Area: AA Grave: 342

At the time of his death he lived at 2 Sterling St Redfern and was a member of the H.C. Guild.

In 1925 Sergeant Bailey’s registered number was re-issued to Probationary Constable Ernest James Williamson.

Charles Fraser was born on the 7 October 1836 in Clyne, Sutherlandshire, Scotland. He married Jane Houston in 1866 in Sydney. They had nine children together between 1867 and 1884.

Charles Fraser was sworn in as a Supernumerary Constable of the NSW Police Force on the 4^th April 1867.  He was confirmed as a Constable on the 1 June 1867 and promoted to Constable 1^st Class on the 1 September 1876.

His first child was born at the Police Camp in Forbes. All of his subsequent children were born at Camp Hill, Forbes. In 1880 his young son and another Constable’s son nearly drowned in the Lachlan River. Two employees of the Commercial Bank heard their cries and came to their assistance.

It appears that he spent most of his service at Forbes before moving to Wallerawang.

Constable 1^st Class Fraser died on the 19 November 1895 at his residence, Railway Lodge, Wallerawang. He was 58. He was buried in the Wallerawang General Cemetery.

His wife was granted a gratuity of £225 and funeral expenses of £7.

His daughter Flora was buried with him in 1918. His wife Jane was buried with him in 1931.  Another daughter, Jane, was buried with him in 1941.

Thomas Shanahan was born on the 14^th May 1844 in Askeaton, Limerick, Ireland. He left Ireland for Australia in 1866. He sailed on the ship British Lion and arrived in Adelaide. Two of his brothers had already settled in Adelaide.

He married Bridget Teresa Murphy in 1870 in Adelaide. They had five children together.

He was sworn in as a Supernumerary Constable of the NSW Police Force on the 25^th October  1872. He was promoted to Constable 1^st Class on the 1st March 1875. He was demoted to Ordinary Constable on the 8^th September 1875 and promoted to Constable 1^st Class on the 1^st July 1876. He was attached to the City Police.

Constable Shanahan suffered from a protracted illness and died on the 11^th November 1876 at The Glebe. He was buried in the Rookwood Catholic Cemeteries and Crematoria.  M2 sect 13 LEW Plot 554

He died leaving a wife and five children, three of whom were under two years of age, two being twins.

His family were not entitled to a large sum out of the Police fund as he had not been long in the force. The Sub-Inspectors of the four metropolitan divisions Messrs Rush, Anderson, Waters and Johnstone undertook a subscription among their men (with only a few subscriptions from citizens) and reached a total of nearly £40. His widow received a gratuity of £42 and £7 funeral expensed from the Police Force.

Oliver Clive Waters (recorded as Oliver Clyne Waters in the NSW Police Gazette) was born about September 1893 at Hickeys Creek near Kempsey.

Oliver Clyne Waters was sworn in as a Probationary Constable of the NSW Police Force on the 6^th January 1915. He was attached to Parramatta. He was confirmed as a Constable on the 6^th January 1916 although this was done posthumously in 1918 .

On the 26^th May 1915 Constable Waters joined the Australian Imperial Forces. He was attached to the 3^rd Battalion 8^th Reinforcements. The 3^rd Battalion was in the 2^nd and 3^rd waves at Gallipolis. They were also involved in the battle of Lone Pine. Oliver did not arrive until November 1915 which was after these battles. However by December 1915 Oliver was wounded and evacuated with all of the AIF. The Battalion was sent to Egypt where they defended the Suez Canal.

In May 1916 the 3^rd Battalion embarked for France and for the next 2½ years served in the trenches of the Western Front.  On the 27^th July 1916 Oliver was wounded in action during the Battle of Pozieres. He was sent to hospital and eventually transferred to England for his injuries and other illnesses that he had contracted.

In September 1917 Oliver was transferred back to the 3^rd Battalion. He was killed in action at Ypres, Belgium on the 8^th November 1917. He was originally reported wounded and missing. Witnesses reported he was badly wounded from a shell in the hand, face and legs at Zonnebeke near Passchendaele. He was carried by comrades to some stretcher bearers who took him to a Canadian dressing station. There is no further information about him after that. His body was never found.

His name is on the Menin Gate Memorial in Belgium.

John Thomas Lawler was born about 1870 at Burrawang (near Berrima) NSW.

John Thomas Lawler was sworn in as a Probationary Constable on the 16^th August 1890. He was confirmed as a Constable on the 16 August 1891. He was promoted to Senior Constable on the 1^st January 1895.

He married Mary Waldron Johnston in 1892 at Moss Vale. At the time he was stationed at Wee Waa. They had five children. One died as an infant. Two boys and two girls survived childhood.

Senior Constable Lawler was first stationed at Moree then Frederickton, Macksville, Gladstone and Port Macquarie (1904).

On the 22^nd October 1912 Senior Constable Lawler was returning to Port Macquarie from the Quarter Sessions at Kempsey. He suffered from an attack of appendicitis but managed to make it to Telegraph Point. He was conveyed to the Hastings District Hospital where he had an operation. The appendicitis was complicated by peritonitis. A clot formed on his brain which paralysed one side of his body. Senior Constable Lawler died at the Hastings District Hospital on the 8^th November 1912. He was 43 years old.

He was the Secretary of the Parents and Citizens Association, a member of the School of Arts Committee and a prominent adherent to the Presbyterian Church.

Senior Constable Lawler was buried on the 9 November 1912 in the West Port Macquarie Cemetery. His funeral was attended by the Mayor of Port Macquarie, the President of the Hastings Shire, the President of the Agricultural Society and Sub-Inspector Edwards. All flags in town were flying half staff and business places and hotels were closed as the procession moved through town.

In 1913 the gratuity for his widow was increased from 280 to £310.
