THE embattled upper echelon of the NSW Police Force will be rocked again today with the launch of an inquest into the suicide of a female officer who was believed to be having a romantic affair with one of state’s most senior officers.
It is understood the top-ranking officer was married at the time he conducted the affair with the woman, who was found dead in a garage two years ago.
The inquest’s revelations come hot on the heels of the civil war between senior officers over the bugging scandal that led to separate inquiries by state parliament and the ombudsman.
The fallen officer worked at a major NSW regional centre and it is understood she was seeing a psychiatrist at the time of her death.
She was described as being a hard worker by former colleagues and left behind a husband, a son and a daughter.
Whispers have been circulating among the brass for years that the 43-year-old was involved in a romantic relationship with one of the state’s most senior and popular officers before her death in the winter of 2013.
Sources who know the top-ranking official last night denied the allegation and described him as a decent and professional family man.
But The Daily Telegraph understands that the coronial investigation will examine text messages purportedly exchanged between the pair that suggest a romantic relationship. It is understood the female officer sent messages to the senior member of the NSW Police executive on the day she took her life.
There is no suggestion that the top-ranking officer engaged in any wrongdoing surrounding the woman’s death.
The officer’s widower still works for NSW Police.
He is well-respected and liked by the police executive and rank-and-file officers.
An extensive list of witnesses is to be called before the inquest, which will be headed by solicitors Kenneth Madden and Scarlet Reid.
The inquest into the death of the female police officer will begin today at Glebe coroner’s court before deputy coroner Paul MacMahon.
The hearings marks the latest in a string of dramas to plague the state’s constabulary as Premier Mike Baird delays naming a successor to current Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione.
The two deputy commissioners previously touted as Mr Scipione’s most likely replacements — Catherine Burn and Nick Kaldas — have been embroiled in an embarrassing bugging scandal in which wrongful surveillance was conducted on Deputy Commissioner Kaldas, who has recently returned to duty from sick leave.
Deputy Commissioner Burn, who ran Operation Mascot, denied instructing police to bug her rival.

SHERIFFS attempting to evict a Warrawong man from his unit were forced to call in police when he threatened the officers with a crowbar, a court has heard.Police were forced to subdue Peter Bevan Dunn, 50, with capsicum spray when he refused to co-operate with the eviction order and repeatedly threatened to hit the officers with the crowbar if they entered the property.He was yesterday found guilty in Wollongong Local Court of hindering the sheriffs in the execution of their duties, and also assaulting a sheriff and a police officer.A further charge of assaulting a law officer was dismissed.Sheriffs Michael Riquelme and Geraldine Trimarchi went to Dunn’s Todd St unit on May 23 with an eviction notice from the Consumer, Trader and Tenancy Tribunal.
The court heard Mr Riquelme attempted to speak with Dunn through the closed screen door and explain the process, however he refused to co-operate and instead grabbed a nearby crowbar and showed it to the officers.
“He said if you do come in I will hurt you,” Ms Trimarchi said.
Mr Riquelme told the court he felt fearful and, after Dunn slammed the door shut, called police.
Four officers arrived a short time later and another attempt was made to speak with Dunn, who did not answer the door.
Dunn told the court he had been in a back room using his computer and had not heard the officers.
Lake Illawarra police officer Constable Giampiero Giuri told the court Ms Trimarchi made two attempts to kick the door open without success before he managed to kick the door open, revealing Dunn standing close by holding the crowbar above his head.
Constable Giuri said Dunn was yelling and acting aggressively and, after making several requests for him to put down the crowbar, Const Giuri pushed Ms Trimarchi out of the way before subduing Dunn with capsicum spray. He was arrested and taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station.
Dunn, an ex-police officer, said he had no intention of harming the sheriffs or police and was merely protecting his property.
He told the court he had slammed the door shut out of fear he would be tasered by the sheriffs.
Magistrate Shane McAnulty found Dunn guilty of three charges – obstructing a sheriff, assaulting a law officer and assaulting a police officer. Mr McAnulty said the assault had not involved battery but he was satisfied the victims had felt an immediate threat.

Article Published in Liverpool RSL Sub-Branch Magazine.
Born at Cootamundra on the 29th. January 1925, the elder of eight children of Australian born parents of English and Irish decent.
Ron’s early childhood was on his parent’s property at Yeoval NSW, where he recalls helping trappers at night to collect rabbits.
Due to a major bushfire that ravaged the area in 1933, The family and remaining stock moved to a second property at Quandialla NSW, A wheat and sheep district where they remained for many years.
His schooling was at a one-teacher school near a Rail Siding called Berendebba, there were on average, sixteen pupils attending class 1st. to 6th.:Ron managed to gain a bursary.
At the outbreak of war in 1939, and still a youth of fourteen he witnessed almost every able bodied man in the district going off to war, For the next couple of years, Ron shore sheep, lumped wheat, fenced and became a general rouseabout.
During 1942 at the age of 17 years six months, he enlisted in the RAAF, after a medical at Parkes and interviews at Sydney, he was informed of a long waiting list before eventual call-up.
Now 18 years he managed to enlist in the AIF in l 943,Basic training was at Bathurst, then on to Canungra Jungle Training for the gruelling Infantry course, Ron volunteered for the Commando Course to follow.
Joining the newly formed 6 Div. Cav. Commando Regiment on the Atherton Tablelands, Ron allotted to 10 Commando Sqn. Sailed with 7 and 9 Sqn on the Katoomba as vanguard for the 6″‘ Division Aitape-Wewak campaign in New Guinea.
A bitter and costly campaign fought for days behind enemy lines, Culminating in the surrender of general Adachi, being present at the surrender Ron felt very fortunate.
On returning from New Guinea and spending some weeks in Concord Hospital, His discharge finally completed, Ron applied and was accepted into the NSW Police force, He was stationed at Leichhardt, Lithgow, Regent Street and Camperdown, Fate took over when Ron on behalf of the Police service went to Victoria Barracks to borrow Walkie Talkie sets for crowd control, The then Col.F. Hassett convinced him that by returning to the regular Army with the rank,his pay would double; The Police Certificate of Service says Very Satisfactory.
Posted to 13 National Service Battalion at Ingleburn as an instructor in 1951, Ron remained there until posted to Japan and then on to 1 RAR Korea as Regimental Police Sgt. Returning with the Battalion in April 1956 to Enoggera Barracks QLD.
Still with I RAR posted to Malaya in Sep. 1959 to Nov. 1961, Returning to Holsworthy NSW, remained as R P Sgt, and Mess Secretary/Treasurer until his discharge on 17 Jan. 1963, as pre arranged Ron again elected to join. the Commonwealth and later Federal Police Service.
After some years and tiring of shift work and double shifts, He decided to call it a day_ Resigning with a Certificate of Service marked Satisfactory.
Ron joined Nock and Kirby’s warehouse at Hoxton Park, which later became Burns Philp, then BBC.
Ron and wife Pat have lived at Minto for the past 24 years, their Son and Daughter both married with children live at Minto and Ingleburn.

MY RECOLLECTIONS OF THE END OF WW2.
As a member of the 2/6 Cav. Commando Regiment comprising 7,9, l 0,Commando Squadrons, We had taken part in the whole of the Aitape-Wewak New Guinea campaign by the 6th.Division.At this time my 2/10 Squadron was occupying a place called Cape Karawop just north of Wewak which had recently been taken after a major battle.Cape Karawop was supposed to give us a rest after a five months continued action, including an amphibious landing at Dove Bay south of Wewak, The Japanese were moving down from the Mountains to our coastal holiday home, they would attack at night with grenades and rifle fire.To us this unofficial War carried on for several nights after we had been told the Japs had surrendered, I can recall our chaps yelling out “The war is over you silly bastards”. From our Unit History “To The Green Fields Beyond” by Shawn O’Leary, I have made the following interesting extracts covering the period.8.15am 6th August 1945, 1 st Atom bomb dropped on Hiroshima.11 am 9th August 1945, 2nd Atom bomb dropped on Nagasaki12th August 1945,Sydney’s crazy celebrations could be heard on our Signals wireless.9.14am 15th August 1945,the single code word NEON was flashed around the globe to confirm the unconditional surrender of Japan, Sydney again went wild, from a platform in the Domain Jack Davey entertained an audience of 150,000.The Commandos took stock of their losses in the campaign, 48 killed 119 wounded, They had killed 778 Japanese taken 23 prisoners and found 363 dead, Our last casualty was on the 18th. “August 1945, A young 19 year old killed by one of our own booby traps while checking for Japanese infiltrators. On the 22nd August 1945 General Adachi advised that Japanese troops had been ordered to cease fire but not to lay down their Arms.On the 13th September 1945 General Adachi formally signed surrender documents on the Air strip at Cape Wom before Major General H.C.H Robertson.Having served the whole of the Campaign and being present on the surrender parade, I was most grateful and proud to have survived WW2

EXCERPT FROM SHAWN O’LEAR’Y “TO THE GREEN FIELDS BEYOND”
At Maurak, Milak, Aupik and Ami, the commandos frequently had been given reliable advance information by natives of enemy locations; and patrol casualties accordingly had been minimised. At Dove Bay the men prowled for an enemy who, wherever he was, was awaiting them. The first patrol clash of any consequence occurred on 27 May. Perkins took his entire troop, accompanied by an attached medical orderly and artillery and infantry signallers (the latter to communicate with mortarmen), and ferreted over the high areas to the south of the perimieter.
The party made an early morning start and trekked along a ridge until it reached an east-west track which showed signs of recent heavy foot traffic. The troop turned west and followed the track down a slope to upper Mandi Creek which it crossed. When the field telephone was checked it failed to bring response. The trailing sig. wire had been cut. A sub-patrol returned and repaired the break and the troop continued its advance.
Soon a clearing was reached in which holes recently had been dug. The soil was yet damp. The troop edged forward, each man a lubricated shadow. In the jungle no insect chirped and a Japanese who was shortly seen, seemed to slide sinuously into the undergrowth.
Suddenly the jungle exploded with shattering fire. Rifles and machine guns laced the troop with lead and in the first moments Lietenant Land and Trooper NEM Mondon went down, both, fortunately, only wounded. Perkins drew his men back to the fringe of the jungle where fallen logs lay at the head of the track home. A call for artillery fire from the 25 pounders on Boram aerodrome failed because of communication inadequacy, but communication was established with supporting mortars and bombs began to fall among enemy pits.
A strongly defended Japanese position having been found, and the reconnaisance object of his patrol thus achieved, Perkins decided to withdraw. It was beyond doubt that artillery and more than a troop of commandos would be needed to eradicate this target. The rear section filtered back along the track, not knowing that enemy had quickly moved behind the troop and were now astride the path with machine guns. As the point scout, Trooper AA Maurer, rounded the first bend he was killed with a burst of automatic fire. Corporal O.H. Pomroy and Trooper Worrad immediately went into action with blazing Brens. The attached medical orderly, Corporal CR Mahony, daringly dived under their fire to tend Maurer whose body he rolled to security over the creek bank for later burial. He braved the fire once again to return with Maurer’s weapon…….and so on.
p320 and yet another incident “…….. The troop moved in again. Not yet had the enemy been destroyed, the barrage having been laid down slightly to the left of the position. Once more the troop drew fire from rifles and machine guns. Lieutenant Roper, Corporal HG Monk and Lance corporal CT Crawley, were wounded, Corporal Pomoroy with his Bren courageously covered the evacuation of the casualties. Two Japanese had been killed.
p339……and yet another …..”On 23 July 2/10 Sqn, however, was to suffer battle casualties. This squadron had not been relieved by 2/7 Sqn to rest in dalliance at Karawop. It had received 39 reinforcements on 19 July, among whom were three officers, one of whom was allotted to each troop. A patrol led by one of these, Lieut. E.R. Lawler, made contact with the enemy near the village of Machouin, south-east of Suik, on 22 July. Next morning, Lawler led a patrol to the area again to check natives’ reports of Japanese casualties caused by them. The patrol comprised most of B Troop’s reinforcements with a leavening of seasoned soldiers in Lieut. Redmond , Lance-Sgt Simpson, Corporal Pomroy and Trooper Nichols. The reconnaissance was to be a routine one which would serve to temper reinforcements to active service conditions.
Unfortunately, the Japanese had moved a force of about 40 men armed with rifles and a light machine-gun to defend a small spur leading to the village. The village itself was in an exposed area and the patrol correctly scouted to left and right instead of massing for attack.
The enemy was concealed in pits on high ground at the rear of the village which covered the spur. Troopers LD Turner and IG Wharton , on the left, were killed in the first firing, collapsing one on the other. Sergeant Simpson, who had dived behind a mound, emerged to try to drag the bodies back, but was himself wounded by a burst of machine-gun fire across the right shoulder and neck.
The situation was no happier to the right. Redmond and Tpr JN Jeffers had been killed and Cpl Mahoney the medical orderly who had so courageously tried to tend Maurer on 27 May, had been wounded. Mahoney’s wounds were serious ones. He had been shot through the arm and throat, yet still he tried to scrabble forward to minister to Jeffers. Jeffers, though, was beyond aid. Under cover from Cpl Pomroy‘s Bren, Tpr RG Denzel , a reinforcement medical orderly, extricated Mahony under fire. Denzel was awarded a Military Medal; Mahoney and Simpson were mentioned in dispatches. The citation for Denzel’s decoration laid particular emphasis on the fact that the deed was outstanding as the soldier had not been under fire before. When a later patrol came out to bury the Australian dead it was discovered that eight Japanese had been killed in the brief, but tragic, fight. It had been a day of tragedy for the regiment comparable with that of the ambush of the cavalry carriers at Derna in 1941.
