The Canberra Times     Wednesday  25 May 1966   p14 of 34

Policemen, citizen cited for bravery

SYDNEY, Tuesday. — Four policemen from country areas in NSW and one citizen from Robertson have been awarded the Queen’s commendation for brave conduct.

The awards were announced today by the Governor of NSW, Sir Roden Cutler.

Sergeant John Francis Stanley, Bathurst, was awarded the commendation for dealing with an emotionally disturbed man in possession of two loaded pistols and a .303 rifle.

He went to the man’s home and was forced to stand up against a hallway with the weapons pointed at him.

Sergeant Stanley struggled with the man and managed to disarm him.

Train crash

Sergeant Leonard George Valentine Jenkins and Mr Henry Edward John Donovan, of Robertson, risked their lives to save the crew of a locomotive which had crashed while hauling a number of petrol tankers.

Hundreds of gallons of petrol had escaped from the fuel tankers, creating extreme danger of explosion and fire.

Both men extinguished a fire burning adjacent to the locomotive, directly under a large fuel tanker.

Senior Constable Frank Thomas Byers and Constable Robert Reginald Lidden, both of Brewarrina, posing as kangaroo shooters, overcame a man who was armed with a shotgun and a .22 repeater rifle.

The man was later sentenced to twelve years hard labour on a charge of wounding another man with intent to murder.

KJ is described as a pipe smoker and a rider of the old Vespa motor cycle.  He was a ‘true gentleman and bloody good copper’.

His mates will remember him from the ‘end of night shift’ bbq’s at Campbelltown and his “easy country” style.

Glen Denholm Well, Mr Higgins would sit in the meal room, addressing everyone not by their first names but by calling them Mr Lewis, Mr Carrol, Mr Denholm ect.

He had an old enamel mug which was always filled with black tea and incessantly smoked Winfield cigarettes with a cigarette holder. This holder was supposed to filter all the tar and nicotine out of the cigarette before it got into your lungs, and it was black, filled with a black tar and looked obnoxious. We all smoked so I suppose it did not matter.

On night work he would go out alone and sit on one of the over passes on the expressway waiting for a break and enter to occur in the hope that he could snare someone. If there was a bust, he would never go to the bust, but allow others to go and he would head to the outskirts. Many is the time he snared a couple of would be crims using this tactic.

Just a really good, honest and lovely man. I can say that I had never seen the man annoyed or even upset, although when a friend of his suddenly resigned and the real story came out later KJ would not believe it.

We are all so lucky to have had him in our lives and the world is a poorer place without this lovely private man. Those who knew him should count themselves very lucky to have been touched by him.

Safe journey old mate, we all will see you, one day, on the other side.

It is with great sadness that we share with the public that Police Dog Rumble this afternoon tragically succumbed to his illness.

Rumble was as tough as they come, but this battle was too much.
It is a tragedy Rumble was unable to enjoy retirement with his handler Mat Muletta and family, which is how we wanted his story to turn out.

He will be cremated and his ashes interred at the Maylands Police Complex, with a plaque.

Rumble was one of 40 dogs working for WA Police. All of them are loved and cherished by us, but you would have to say that Rumble was certainly special.

He made an exceptional contribution to policing in Western Australia and keeping the community safe. You could say he was loved by the public and loathed by the crooks.

Since 2011 he was involved in 620 arrests and in over 200 of those, Rumble single-handedly tracked and located the offenders.
Since July this year he had a part in 74 arrests and was directly responsible for 18 of those.

Rumble united the WA community throughout his battle and the WA Police was humbled by the overwhelming response to his illness. Today is an extremely sad day, on which we wish ‘Our Boy’ Rumble goodbye.

Sincere condolences to the Muletta Family and Mounted and Canine Operations.

Thank you to all the staff at the Murdoch Veterinary Hospital who worked tirelessly in this difficult time.
