Sergeant Darren Jones is a serving member of the NSW Police Force based at Parramatta Local Area Command.

Darren was diagnosed with Stage 3 Bowel Cancer in June 2015 which he successfully treated with Chemotherapy. He was in remission in August of 2016 when Doctors found metastasised cells in Darren’s abdomen. He underwent further Chemotherapy and all was looking good until mid-February 2017, when he received a Stage 4 Liver Cancer diagnosis.

Darren and Trish, also a serving member of the NSW Police Force have twin 11-year olds, a boy and a girl, Ty and Charli. Ever since Darren and Trish had their children, they have dreamt of being able to take their family on a holiday to Disneyland. A goal that now seems more pressing to create special memories for the children, and to give the family some precious time away together.

With the assistance of NSW Police Legacy, Darren’s mates and colleagues are fundraising to support Darren with his medical expenses, and to give the family their dream holiday.

Dear members, it is my sad duty to inform you all that another esteemed member of our Branch has passed away. Alex Findlay had been ill for quite some time, and passed away in hospital on Saturday, 10 March, 2018 around 9.30pm. His funeral is at Woronora Cemetery, Sutherland, South Chapel at 11am on Monday 19 March. Alex did not want a Police funeral, however, Maureen and her family would like to see members of our Branch and former workmates attend.

Alex worked traffic with my father in the 60’s. I remember going to many social occasions with Alex and his family. He had a very broad Scottish accent! Nice bloke, nice family.

Kevin was a lovely bloke who knew and looked after his troops.
A tall man at 6′ 3″, he was 13 stone, 13 lb when he joined the NSWPF with blue eyes, black hair and a single man who was a general farm hand, for 18 months, prior to joining “the job”.
Kev married on the 29 September 1951
[divider_dotted]
I randomly ran into Kev at Coles, Moss Vale, about two years ago ( 2016 ).  We didn’t have a great deal to do with each other directly over my 27 years of Policing but we knew each other to the point that I approached him to say g’day.
Apart from age, he hadn’t changed much but bugger me if he didn’t remember my name and without even bringing the topic up, he said that what “they” did to me ( stemming from my on duty fatal mva in 2002 ) “was wrong”.  That comment really touched me.  You think that you are insignificant in the scheme of things but there are people on the side who remember you for the good work that you did – not the mishaps that occurred upon the journey of policing.
We chatted for a few minutes but it was lovely to run into him and have that last chat.
May Kev forever Rest In Peace.

Canberra Times (ACT : 1926 – 1995), Saturday 28 April 1984, page 9

New search for girl’s body

WOLLONGONG: Police are planning a new search for the body of five year old Renee Aitkin who vanished 10 weeks ago from her home in Narooma.

Renee disappeared during the night from the bedroom she shared with her brother, Bradley, 8.

Superintendent Kevin Lawler, of Wollongong, said yesterday it would be at least three weeks before the police needed for this fourth search would be available.

“We’ve got too many on leave at the moment to raise the numbers, and there’ll be more sitting for exams during the May holidays,” he said.

Early this month Chief Inspector Bob Snape, of Wollongong, said research in Victoria had led them to conclude that Renee had been murdered and that her body was somewhere around Narooma.

Abel Tasman We did our Associate Diploma in Justice Administration together at the old Mitchell College of Advanced Education (now Charles Sturt Uni). He was a gentleman, a real character and a policeman’s policeman.
George Krooglik RIP Denis. Still have his business card when he visited Albury on the 12.7.03 in his capacity as a Director and Travel Writer for True Blue Guided Tours. Condolences to his family and friends. He was a very likable guy…
David AsplandDavid is an administrator in this group. I first met Denis at the Police Academy in December 1980. He was my Training and Induction Officer for Chatswood. I still remember our first meeting with Denis wearing gold chains around his neck and gold rings on several of his fingers, which was very different to Tommy Lupton and Maurie Green. In spite of this, I stayed in the job and Denis and I kept bumping into each other over the years at places like the Mitchell College, Bathurst.. One of the strangest meetings was at Hill End during Easter 1984. I was doing a spot of relieving duty after a very busy time on Mt Panorama at Easter 1983. I was carrying out a foot patrol of the town when I saw what was obviously an unmarked police vehicle come bouncing off the end of the Bridle Track. It was Denis and his offsider carrying out an “EEO Tour” of the state. After several coffees and a chat, he proceeded off in the direction Mudgee. I kept bumping into him at odd events like the 1988 Bicentennial when he was the Barracks Sergeant at UNSW responsible for keeping us country cops in line. Last time I met him he was Acting LAC in the Blue Mountains sometime around 2000. He was a thoroughly likeable old rogue and he will be very badly missed.
Chris Devery I remember meeting him in College St when I first came to work there in the early ‘90s. He was well respected by the cops I worked with then.
Les de Belin Denis was a bit of a traveller. Always remember the story he told when he was driving in the southern states of US, and was pulled over by the local town sheriff for speeding. Denis showed his NSW Police ID to the sheriff who replied in his most southern drawl, “That’s a very pretty badge Sir. In fact its about the prettiest darn Police badge I ever did see. You can have the pretty badge back,…………and this speeding ticket too”
Lex Booth RIP Denis. ANZAC days will not be the same without you. Who is going to edit True Blue (UN Police newsletter). We (TRG) drove him mad when he was the barracks supervisor at Bathurst. He would tell us that we all knew the rules but he could trust us to break every one of them.

Alex, Grant and Natalie – much love to you all. Losing such a magnificent man will not be easy, but you will have our support. So many of my fond childhood memories from visiting Sydney include Uncle Denis. The strength, love and support he provided me after Nanna’ passing will never be forgotten.

See you all at Bangalow, sorry we can’t be in Sydney with you.

Embalmed bodies in family crypt damaged: police

SYDNEY: Two embalmed bodies tampered with at the Northern Suburbs Cemetery was “the most offensive case” a senior policeman has had to handle, a police statement said yesterday.

Police would not divulge how the bodies had been damaged but the statement said the family vault housing the bodies had been forced open.

The two embalmed bodies were tampered with between September 23 and November 2 this year during a break-and-enter on the vault.

The bodies had been secured in lead-lined coffins in the crypt.

I have been a member of the police for more than 30 years and this is the most offensive case I have dealt with in my career,” Ryde Patrol Commander Inspector Dennis Percy said in the statement.

Police were appealing to anyone who may have information on the incident.

City’s finest to reunite

Thursday, 14th July, 2016

By Michael Murphy

BEST EVER: A Ford 351 GT/XB 2 door hardtop patrolling the border at Curlwaa near Wentworth circa 1977.<br />
BEST EVER: A Ford 351 GT/XB 2 door hardtop patrolling the border at Curlwaa near Wentworth circa 1977.

Former local police officers have already begun telling tales of the good old days ahead of a reunion next year.

Ray Gardoll, who served with the local police force from 1995 to 2009, has started to get inquiries from as far away as Thailand about the two-day event planned in May.

Even a 95-year-old former sergeant has put his hand up to make the trek back to the Hill for the occasion. After he got word on the street, former sergeant Reg Pinkerton rang the local police station to confirm details.

Sergeant Pinkerton retired around 1979. As well as Broken Hill, he served at Albion Park, Mullumbimby and Nowendock, where he was issued a horse and had the assistance of “black trackers” to look for stolen cattle throughout the local ranges.

One local bloke reported he had been “saved from a life of crime by a swift boot up the bum from Sgt Pinkerton back in the day”.

Many locals would remember one of the city’s longest serving police officers, Garry Nowlan, who has been in fine form posting old pictures and yarns on the Back to Barrier Facebook site.

The former highwayman rated the Ford 351 GT/XB 2 door Hardtop as the best patrol car he ever had the pleasure to drive.

“It was easy to catch the hoodlums at the Hill in those days,” Nowlan wrote.

“If they got away, you just parked in Argent Street for a while and they were back in 10 minutes.

“They just could not resist doing ‘the lap’ and we were there waiting for them.”

Ray Gardoll got the idea for the Back to Barrier reunion after celebrating a similar event in Blacktown, NSW, earlier this year.

“I had a ball, an absolute ball, and I thought I would do it here and see what the response is … and the response has been great.”

He said word was beginning to spread, and about 300 people had logged on and liked the Facebook page, with about three quarters of those having served in the local district.

The Barrier police region stretches from Tibooburra in the north to Wentworth, Dareton and Buronga in the south, to Ivanhoe in the east.

Ray said about ten local retired officers still lived in the Hill.

Ray’s own career was cut short when a “drunken crook” tripped over and destroyed his knee.

“We were carrying her out to put her in the cells, and she tripped and fell and grabbed the first thing she could, and it just happened to be my knee,” Ray said.

Ray said he would love to hear from anyone who would be interested in the reunion, and he would be forming a committee in the next few months to work out and organise the finer details of the event.

If you know anyone who would be interested, point them to Facebook.com/BarrierReunion2017.
