18 AWARDS MADE FOR BRAVE CONDUCT

Drowned rescuer earns medal

Mr Daniel Primmer, who drowned after becoming snagged in debris while trying to rescue a woman trapped by flood waters in Reedy Creek, ACT, on March 20 last year, has been awarded a Bravery Medal posthumously.

Mr Primmer was one of six people to be awarded the Bravery Medal for their part in rescuing the woman.

Altogether, 18 awards for bravery were announced yesterday by the Governor-General, Sir Zelman Cowen, on recommendations made to him by the Australian Decorations Advisory Committee. Thirteen Bravery Medals and five Commendations for Brave Conduct were awarded.

The rescue attempt at Reedy Creek took place where the stream crosses Sutton Road, near Queanbeyan.

A car driven by Mrs Rosanna Perry, 33, of Bungendore, was swept off a bridge by the flood waters.

Mr Primmer and a companion, Mr John Henjack, who also has been awarded the Bravery Medal, tied themselves with rope secured to a guide post and held by five men, and attempted to swim to the woman.

The two were swept away before they could reach her, and although Mr. Henjack was pulled to safety, Mr Primmer became snagged in debris, and drowned.

Sergeant Alwyne Hill and Senior Constable Robert Burrage, of the NSW Police, who were also involved in the rescue attempt, have been awarded Bravery Medals. With other police officers, they made three attempts to reach the stranded woman, using a rope, which failed, and then made several attempts to swim to her.

Mr Robert Perrott, of Bungendore, who also entered the flood waters but was swept away and managed to reach the bank downstream, has also been awarded the Bravery Medal.

Senior Constable Brian Bock, of the ACT Police, received a Commendation for Brave Conduct in the rescue attempt. He took charge of a NSW Emergency Service boat which eventually he manoeuvred close enough to rescue the woman.

Mr Ronald Scott, Mr Graham MacDonald and Mr Kenneth Beazley, all of Malua Bay, NSW, were each awarded a Bravery Medal for their actions during the successful rescue of three people stranded on a rocky outcrop after they had lost their boat in heavy seas.

On September 18, 1977, the three rescuers had put to sea from Guerilla Bay, and in the face of a souther’y gale reached the three people whose boat had become disabled, been washed up on the rocks and destroyed.

Mr MacDonald had jumped from the rescue boat, and persuaded the stranded people to swim to the boat, where they were all picked up and returned safely to shore.

Mr Scott, the owner of the rescue boat, was praised for his handling of the boat. Mr Beazley’s award said that “in taking part in a sea rescue in such hazardous conditions” he had displayed considerablecourage.

The Bravery Medal, for an act of bravery in hazardous circumstances, was awarded to:

Kenneth William Beazley, Malua Bay, NSW; Robert Lynton Burrage, NSW; Mark Forrest, Busby, NSW; John Donald Albert Harrison, Vale Park, SA; John Tony Thomas Henjack, Queanbeyan, NSW; Alwyne Grant Hill, NSW; Craig Anthony Hilton, Cheltenham, Vic; Graham Charles MacDonald, Malua Bay, NSW; Robert Leslie Perrott, Bungendore, NSW; Daniel Francis Cotter Primmer, Narrabundah, ACT (posthumous); RonaldMaplemore Maplemore Scott, Malua Bay, NSW; Malcolm Coubrough Shanks, Roseberry, Tas; Grahame Clement Sheen, NSW.

Commendations for Brave Conduct were made to: Brian Maurice Bock, ACT; Graham Tilka Glover, Seacliff Park, SA; Sam Laria, Cabramatta, NSW; John Domenic Pick, Hyde Park, SA; Dr William Thurlow, Elizabeth Beach, NSW.

Bob was a man who loved his game fishing and he was good at it. A favourite fishing recollection seems appropriate. The 2003 Tollgates Tournament (Batemans Bay) saw Bob and his ‘Elusive’ crew (Larry Barnes, Peter Kastelein, Hayden Neal and myself) frustrated after the first two days that having tagged a few fish we were still out of the running in our preferred Tag and Release category. A couple of other boats had really got among them. We agreed to we spend the final (third) day trying to encourage a marlin that might earn us the Biggest Game Fish trophy. The morning spent fishing in the local Bay waters proved fruitless so we half threw-in-the-towel and headed north back home to Ulladulla. Of course as game boats do, we continued dragging a pattern of lures. We were off Brush Island when Bob twigged that we were in particularly good water temperature and he decided to work in this warm water for a while. What a good call that proved to be. A big blue marlin hooked up and we got it into the boat. We were then in a quandary. It was a trophy fish, but we were a lot closer by then to Ulladulla than to Batemans Bay where the fish needed be weighed-in. How were we going to get the fish back to the weigh station before the tournament closing time? Another good Bob Muir call. Power home to Ulladulla; unload the fish onto a trailer; and drive it back to the Bay. This we did. The reaction of many motorists on the Princes Highway to a box trailer with a monster marlin hanging out of it might be imagined. What might also be imagined was the reaction from other tournament crews to this fish being backed up to the weigh station in a trailer only minutes before the tournament closed. Despite the sideways glances of some other competitors, unconventional practice or not, our fish was accepted as a legitimate entry, and at 218 kg it took the trophy. Bob will get another laugh out of this. Thanks Larry Barnes for helping me with this. Brian Koorey

There is a possibility that Ross saw Service in the Military – although I am unable to find corroborating evidence.

I am also unable to find any details about his funeral.

Nothing further, than what is recorded above, is known about this person at the time of publication and further information and photos would be appreciated.

Condolences to Roy’s wife, Betty, and their six daughters – Ellen, Alison, Jean, Susan, Megan and Roslyn.

Roy was a bloody lovely bloke and I remember his fondly as one of my Sergeants at Wollongong GDs back in the early 1980s.

Jean Mc

Sergeant Roy McIntyre has left us

My Dad Royston John McIntyre left us yesterday afternoon at 5:30pm.
Mum Betty and all his six daughters Ellen, Alison, Jean, Susan, Megan and Roslyn were with him, and his son-in-law Malcolm.
We had told him Lell was coming home from overseas and Susan would arrive yesterday morning from Gove. He smiled and said “All our daughters will be with us”. He waited for that.
We watched him and held him as he took his last breath, and we saw the colour drain from his face. It was momentary and very peaceful.
We sat with him for a few hours, drank champagne and shared our most vivid memories of him. Together we cried and laughed – the McIntyre way – and enjoyed being a family with him once again.
We observed as the palliative care nurse examined and declared him ( deceased ) then the funeral home people wrapped him up and solemnly took him away.
I like to believe he’s now with his mum Sadie, his beloved sister Heather, his two sons-in-law John Nash and John Tomashek and all his friends who have gone before him. At 91 he was the last one.
He asked for a Police funeral, to be cremated and his ashes spread from the point beyond the Shellharbour boat ramp where the surfers go. A favourite fishing spot.
We don’t have a date yet for the funeral because it depends on the police.
If you wish to attend Dad’s funeral, please personal message or phone one of us for the details.
Rest now peacefully our beautiful Dad – everybody’s favourite. We will always adore you.

Canberra Times (ACT : 1926 – 1995),

Wednesday 31 August 1966, page 10

Assault on Collector policeman alleged

GOULBURN, Tuesday. — A Queanbeyan man was committed in Goulburn this morning for trial on a charge of having assaulted a policeman.

James Pantos, 26, was charged with having assaulted Constable Roy McIntyre at Collector on May 29 this year.

Mr J. Mullins, for Pantos, said evidence by three witnesses and by Const. McIntyre was “confusing and conflicting”.

Mr R. J. Wingett, SM. said, however, that a prima facie case had been established.

Mr Wingett also committed Roger Vern Hancock, of Queanbeyan, on a charge of having obstructed the law.

Mr B. Gallen, for Hancock, said he had no part in the alleged assault on Const. McIntyre.

Mr Wingett committed him on the charge of having aided the alleged attackers to escape.

He set the date for the trial on both men for September 12 and allowed $200 bail for each man.
