Rusty nail isn’t kosher

A SIX-year-old boy bit into a kosher sausage recently, only to find a rusty needle in it.

The 3.5cm needle was discovered after the child complained that something had lodged in his mouth.

The boy’s mother, who purchased the packet of sausages from Coles Supermarket at Bondi Junction, told the Australian Jewish News that she “freaked out; my son could have died if he had swallowed the needle”.

Coles media relations manager Lisa Amor confirmed that a “contamination has been reported. We believe it was introduced at store level. We’re making inquiries with our supplier, but we’ve handed the matter to the police, who will be conducting the investigation.”

Waverley Police Detective-Sergeant Paul Vallis said “both Waverley Police and the NSW Department of Public Health have taken a report of the incident and we’re monitoring the situation”.

Stephen Lewis, general manager of Melbourne’s Continental Kosher Butchers — the supplier of the sausages — said he “was loathe to make any formal statement … given the police involvement”. Nevertheless, he stressed that “the processing procedures, coupled with regular external audit inspections of the processing premises, were such that the inclusion of any foreign matter such as described simply could not have been effected in production”.

Mr Lewis said “as an official supplier to Coles Supermarkets Australia for some years, I’m confident that the company will properly investigate all matters associated with the claims, which will no doubt result in no blame being laid on Continental Kosher Butchers’ procedures”. He urged customers to “check that products are sealed when purchasing. If a consumer notices any breakage to a package, it should be handed to a Coles employee” to ensure that it is not sold.

Canberra Times (ACT : 1926 – 1995),

Two found guilty on Partlic jail bashing

SYDNEY: After considering its verdict for three hours, a Sydney District Court jury found two men guilty yesterday of the savage bashing of teenage fine defaulter Jamie Partlic in Long Bay jail in November 1987.

The jury found Gary Donald Stokes, 33, of maliciously inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

He faces a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.

His co-accused, Darren Bruce Difford, 22, was found guilty of the lesser charge of maliciously inflicting grievous bodily harm. He faces a maximum of seven years’ jail.

After the verdicts, Detective-Sergeant Paul Vallis told the court that Stokes was currently serving a sentence of 18 years, with a 15-year non-parole period, after pleading guilty last month to another charge of maliciously inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent to inflict grievous bodily harm.

Crown Prosecutor Chris Maxwell said that that charge had considerable relevance to the bashing of Mr Partlic. It related to an incident in Newcastle in 1986 in which Stokes bashed another man, Nick Psaltis, and jumped up and down on his head in an argument over drugs.

Stokes’s counsel, Ken Magnus, said he had lodged an appeal against the severity of that sentence.

In a brief outburst from the dock, Stokes said, “He sentenced me to 18 years because he knew about this case. That’s why I got 18 years.”

Sergeant Vallis said Difford was currently serving a sentence for breaking and entering and was due for release in June next year.

Judge Nash remanded both to appear for sentence this morning.

The Jamie Partlic case has had a far-reaching effect on the prison system in NSW, acting as the catalyst for reforms within the jail system and the abolition of jail terms for those who failed to pay fines imposed for minor offences.

Traffic offenders now have their driver’s licence or vehicle registration cancelled until they pay up. Other offenders must perform community service work.

Jamie Partlic, now 20, of Cronulla in Sydney’s south, went to Long Bay Jail on November 7, 1987, to serve four days, for non-payment of traffic fines totalling $1197.

According to witnesses at the trial, Partlic was in the fine defaulters’ yard when he was approached by Difford and Stokes, who had been working out on a punching bag nearby.

There was apparently some conversation.

Witnesses said Mr Partlic’s comments were innocuous.

Both Stokes and Difford said Mr Partlic had spat on Stokes and had been behaving like a “smart arse”.

The prosecution alleged that Difford had begun the attack and that Stokes had continued it, punching and kicking Mr Partlic, then stamping on his head as he lay on the ground. Stokes had thrown him head-first into a fire hydrant and then jumped on him again. Finally, Stokes had lifted the then unconscious Mr Partlic and thrown him headlong on to the concrete.

The savage bashing left Mr Partlic comatose for four months with severe brain damage. He is still profoundly disabled, with little prospect of a complete recovery.

Both Stokes and Difford admitted they had been drinking “jail brew” at the time.

NT policeman drowns in car accident

DARWIN: A policeman drowned at the weekend after the patrol car he was travelling in rolled off a wharf at Darwin.

Police said yesterday that Detective Sergeant Ian Bradford, 37, and his partner were patrolling the Old Fort Hill wharf at 11.30pm on Saturday when their patrol car rolled off the edge of the dark pier.

Sergeant Bradford‘s partner, who was driving, struggled back to shore and was treated for shock and lacerations.

Police divers recovered Sergeant Bradford‘s body just after midnight. He is survived by his wife, Dianne, and three children.

Police said a report on the incident had been submitted to the Coroner.

Detective Sergeant Second Class Ian BRADFORD was a passenger in a CIB vehicle which was patrolling the Darwin wharf area just prior to midnight on the 28 January 1984.

The Wharf was being extended to join up with another section and was incomplete.

The vehicle went over the edge between the two wharves.

The driver, Detective Jon HAYES, managed to get out of the sinking car, and although he dived down several times to try to extricate the passenger, Detective Bradford was knocked unconscious and drowned inside the police vehicle.

May Elaine LOOMES death notice

Updated 17 July 2023.

May May and Brian Forever Rest In Peace.

Brian LOOMES

from his FB page:

Your friendly relaxed Civil Funeral Celebrant.

Brian was a Civil Marriage Celebrant for 25 years and is a Justice of the Peace.

I have retired as a Marriage Celebrant, however I am continuing to conduct Funeral Ceremonies and consider myself to be a full time professional celebrant.

As a funeral celebrant I have officiated at funeral and memorial services for many years.

I like to call these “Life Centred Ceremonies” as the whole service including the eulogy must recognize, pay tribute to and celebrate the life of the deceased.

The service should offer comfort, support and a sense of comfort to those who are mourning the loss of someone who was special to them.

I can provide assistance with preparing the service, the eulogy and advice regarding funeral arrangements.

Brian can help you through all aspects and enjoys helping people and prides himself on paying special attention to detail at all times to create a personal ceremony that reflects the feelings, beliefs and personality of the deceased with a totally professional relaxed manner.

please feel free to contact Brian for more information. View the the many thank you messages from satisfied families

Man on harbouring charge

SYDNEY: A South Australian man, described by police as a male prostitute, appeared in Sydney’s Central Court of Petty Sessions yesterday, charged with having harboured a prison escaper, Mr Raymond John Denning.

Mr Margarete Ngatai, 31, unemployed, of Para Hills, South Australia, appeared before Mr Henry, SM, wearing a maroon dress, red high-heel shoes and a bright-red-satin jacket.

He is charged with having knowingly harboured Mr Denning, an escaped prisoner, between April 6 and 21 at Nelson Bay and in Sydney.

Sergeant Brian Loomes, prosecuting, said that Mr Ngatai had accompanied Mr Denning to South Australia where they had lived together for three weeks. They had later returned to NSW.

Mr Ngatai had then returned to South Australia where he had been arrested last Wednesday. He was extradited yesterday to NSW.

Mr J. Bettons, for Mr Ngatai, said he had been told by Mr Ngatai that he had contacted police when he had discovered that the person he was living with was Mr Denning.

Mr Henry refused bail and adjourned the matter for mention to May 8.

Mr Denning is still at large.

Lotto copy swallowed, say police

SYDNEY: A man who falsely claimed for a Lotto win of $1.25 million, had swallowed the evidence – a carbon copy of the coupon – police alleged in Sydney Central Court of Petty Sessions yesterday.

Mr Rayson Light, 37, clerk, of East Sydney, was charged with having attempted to obtain $1.25 million on December 17, 1980, by having pretended he had submitted a valid winning Lotto entry.

He was also charged with having forged a Lotto coupon with intent to defraud, at Darlinghurst, on December 15 and with having uttered a forged coupon on December 17.

He was charged yesterday at Chatswood with having uttered a forged coupon. No pleas were entered.

Sergeant Brian Loomes, prosecuting, alleged that while being interviewed by detectives at Chatswood yesterday morning, Mr Light had stolen and then swallowed a carbon copy of the Lotto coupon relating to his false claim.

Mr G. Penny, for Mr Light, said the matter was still the subject of litigation in the Supreme Court.

He said his client had been born in Canton, China, and had come to Australia in 1975.

Mr R. Henry, SM, allowed him conditional bail.

Dog rewarded for past tricks

A LOCAL Dog is proud to have received a reward for his past tricks.

This 73-year-old Dog once ran, passed a ball and tackled, too.

Ken Rowlands, from Lennox Head, is the former Canterbury Bankstown Rugby League Club player who on April 1 was one of about 200 past footballers given a medallion to mark their service to the team.

Ken played about 70 first-grade games for the Bulldogs from 1958 to 1961 ? but they were called the Berries back in those days.

He played in the centres and on the wing.

At the official function held before the Bulldogs’ game at Telstra Stadium, he was rubbing shoulders with rugby league greats Dr George Peponis, Steve Mortimer, Chris Anderson, Terry Lamb and Graeme Hughes.

“It was a wonderful day,” he said.

“It was like a reunion.”

Ken had just finished his probationary term in the NSW police force when he was approached by Ken ‘Tank’ Charlton to join the club.

He was 24 years old.

Ken was playing rugby union with Randwick at the time, and had taken up his first posting to the Belmore ‘call box’ located at the suburban railway station.

He made the switch to league and went on to play with the Berries and the Newtown Jets.

Meanwhile, Ken’s son, Andrew, is currently playing professional rugby union with the Basingstoke club in the United Kingdom.

Andrew is a former Ballina junior, and has been playing in the UK for the past two years.
