Gary has also suffered the devastating impact of a debilitating episode of prostate and bladder concerns. His ‘rock’ is Maureen, his wonderful wife, who recently advised me that Gary is commencing to do a little better, having recently been advised that there is no longer any concern apropos to ‘clotting’ or ‘cancer’ with respect to his lungs. Many problems persist, but together, Gary and Maureen confront them resolutely.

Mark TullMr Baldwin was the OIC of Maitland with a rank of Inspector in the early 1980’s. He was a great boss and a lovely hard working copper.
He maintained great relations with the Judiciary and his men & women and I never will forget one New Years Eve in the main street of Maitland. Mr Baldwin was there with us, keeping the peace, and this was unusual for a uniformed inspector. He took a pack of us with caged trucks when the street was becoming a little out of control, walked down the middle of the road and us in tow. He would point to someone causing trouble and yell out “lock him up” and we did.
We cleaned out the trouble in good short order and I believe Ross signed all the charges.

Police officer killed in Gippsland motorcycle crash

A police officer has been killed in Victoria’s east after her motorcycle and a four-wheel-drive vehicle collided.
The collision on the Princes Highway near Lindenow South, 20 kilometres from Bairnsdale in Gippsland, occurred about 7am on Wednesday and was being investigated by the police major collision unit.
It is understood the 53-year-old officer was travelling to work in Sale.
The male driver of the 4WD vehicle, who is believed to be a Gippsland-based doctor, was assisting police with their inquiries.
The Princes Highway was blocked in both directions, with traffic diverted at Benworden Road.
Police confirmed the victim was a senior constable from an Eastern Region police station but made no further comment.
Anyone with information about the crash is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on1800 333 000.
As some of you may know, yesterday one of our members, Senior Constable Kate McLeod was tragically killed in a road accident while travelling to work in Eastern Victoria.

Driver charged over police officer’s death
THE driver of the four wheel drive vehicle involved in the death of a Sale police officer on Wednesday is facing charges of culpable driving and dangerous driving causing death.
Patrick Mattu, 30, from Bairnsdale, faced an out of sessions hearing on Wednesday night in Bairnsdale and was remanded to front Bairnsdale Magistrates’ Court on Thursday morning.
It is believed a four wheel drive vehicle was travelling east along the Princes Highway near Lindenow South when it and a motorcycle collided head-on about 7am.
The female rider of the motorcycle, whose name had not been released yesterday morning, died at the scene.
It is understood the 53-year-old Senior Constable was travelling to work in Sale and The Age reported that the driver of the four wheel drive was believed to be a Gippsland-based doctor.
The driver and his female passenger in the four wheel drive were not injured.
The Princes Highway was blocked in both directions, with traffic diverted at Bengworden Rd, as detectives from the Major Collision Investigation Unit examined the scene.

A 30-year-old man from Bairnsdale, in south-east Victoria, has been charged with causing a crash that killed an off-duty police officer on Wednesday.
Senior Constable Kate McLeod was hit by a car while riding a motorcycle on the Princes Highway at Lindenow South, about 7:00am (AEDT), and died at the scene of the crash.

Sub-inspector Walker, who received his promotion last week, leavesTamworth for his new post, Braidwood, early next month. He has been ten years in Tamworth, having went there in 1901 from Sydney.
Although only a comparatively young man, he has had fairly rapid advancement in the police force. He joined in 1895, and was sent to Armidale in 1896. After a year there, he was transferred to Sydney, where he stayed, three or four years. He went to Tamworth as senior-constable, and in 1905 was promoted to the rank of senior sergeant. Sub-inspector Walker is a son of superintendent Walker, who-used to be stationed at Uralla, and well known in the New England district in the 70‘s. Among his exploits were some exciting experiences with bushrangers and he distinguished himself by shooting the famous Thunderbolt.

Harry Morfoot, past President of the Penrith City Nashos National Servicemen’s Association.
Harry, a National Service veteran was 78.
Harry had been President of the Penrith City Nashos for more than a decade, when he resigned earlier this year due to poor health. He will always be remembered for his role in developing the Nashos in the Penrith area.
In 2002 Harry and Tom Kelly were members of the Blue Mountains Nasho Sub-Branch, when they thought it was time to form a branch in Penrith. From humble beginnings, the Penrith City Nashos today has around 150 members.
Harry was a tireless worker for charity and through the Nashos he was one of the figures who spearheaded fundraising drives for bodies including the Cancer Council, Salvation Army, the burns and cancer units at Concord Hospital, St John Ambulance, Defence Care and Legacy.
My sympathies go to Harry’s wife Dorothy, children and grandchildren.
Your cigarette holder has been remembered and the fact that you also stood up for your Constables within the NSW Police Force.

I would like to say this to you all as a retired NSW Police Officer and Wall to Wall Rider since 2012.
Like all of us, I participate in the Wall to Wall to honour fallen mates, raise much needed funds for Police Legacy and enjoy the comradery that this important event brings. Since late last year I have have been experiencing the vital work Police Legacy do first hand after the death of my father.
I was a second generation Police Officer, my dear Dad, Retired Snr Sgt Harold Morfoot (Harry or ‘H’ as he was known to his mates) passed away at home late last year at the age of 78. Dad was in the job for 30 years working the City and Western Suburbs. He was also Branch Secretary of the NSW Police Association for many years and strong advocate for Police Legacy, as he, like a lot of us also lost mates in the job. Dad also loved motorcycles and did a tenure in Traffic with the Triumph Tiger Sidecar Outfits in the 1960’s.
Dad was more than a great father, he was a close mate to me and I miss him more than I can ever explain.
As you can imagine, my mother Dorothy, his wife of 60 years was devastated by his passing and has had difficulty adjusting to life without him and we had been extremely concerned for her.
Recently a NSW Police Legacy Package was delivered to Mum. Included in the package was a Welcome letter, booklet on grief management, registration forms for her and the Police Legacy Pin. She has worn her Police Legacy Pin each day since receiving it. Mum was overwhelmed at the offers of assistance that this package has given her, and as a Coppers wife of many years she feels privileged to be as part of the Police Family and looks forward to her association with Legacy. She said wearing the Pin helps manage her grief as she knows Dad’s service was valued.
I have already sent a personal thank you letter to NSW Police Legacy but I wanted to thank the W2W Committee and each and every W2W rider as I can see the help that this package has given to Mum, a dedicated Police Officer’s wife and loving Mum who supported Dad through his 30 years in the job. In particular I would like to thank Miss Karen Murphy, Police Legacy Network Co-ordinator who forwarded the package to Mum, Sen Sgt Paul Bousefield, President and Inspector Ian Colless, Treasurer, both old workmates I have the pleasure of saying and who are instrumental in the organising of the ride as well as their Legacy and Policing Duties. I have always known that Police Legacy performs a very important role and have been impressed no end seeing it first-hand. Thank you again on behalf of my family.

Chris FraserAbsolute gentleman and good bloke. I remember working on the hill at the old SCG at a big cricket match with him one day. He was a Sgt 2/c. I was in my pro and don’t think I had made an arrest for anything other than Drunk at that stage. We spotted a bloke throw a can (steel ones in those days). Geoff lead the way and we grabbed him, took him to the back of the hill and Geoff gave him a lecture then let him go. I was crestfallen. In retrospect, it was a very good decision and possibly saved a young bloke from gaining a criminal record for a momentary lapse in judgement. It demonstrated what a caring and thoughtful bloke Geoff was.
On another occasion Geoff was working at the Hordern Pavilion for a Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs concert. There was a VIP room high up at the back, fully enclosed with a large, glass window looking over the venue. As Geoff entered, Thorpie hit a string that produced an unbelievably loud note that caused the glass to vibrate. Geoff was adamant that Thorpie had aimed it at him, but had a good laugh about it.
