DEATH OF CAPTAIN ZOUCH.
THE people of Goulburn heard with sad surprise on Monday morning that death had claimed for his own one of the oldest residents of the city – Captain Henry Zouch. For some two or three weeks the deceased gentleman had been ill ; but as it was circulated that his condition was improving fears for him were allayed, and his recovery was generally looked for. This being so, the news of his death came with a greater shock. It was on Saturday morning that the deceased gentleman became worse, and throughout the day he remained in a dangerous state, being hardly conscious. Sunday saw no improvement, but on the contrary he became lower, and was unconscious the greater part of the day ; and in the evening at 6 o’clock he breathed his last. His illness was brought on by exposure to the sun, which he experienced last Friday fortnight whilst tending to his garden, of which occupation the Captain was very fond. To the effects of that exposure, and to decay of the system, his death is attributed. The Captain was in his 73rd year, and has resided in New South Wales for about 50 years.
The following, which is taken from Mr. J. Henniker Heaton’s “Australian Dictionary of Dates, and Men of the Time,” gives an outline of his career :
Zouch, Captain Henry, son of Colonel Zouch, commander of a British regiment during the last American war of 1812-14, was born in Quebec, where his father was for some time commandant. When a young man, Mr. Henry Zouch repaired to England, and received his education in the military college at Sandhurst. In 1826 he obtained a commission as Ensign in the fourth or ” King’s Own Regiment.” After serving in several garrison towns in England, he came out to the colony of New South Wales with his regiment. In those days every convict ship was conducted and guarded hither by a detachment of troops. Captain Zouch was appointed in 1834 to the first division of the military mounted police, stationed at Bathurst. There were then three divisions, one at Bathurst, one at Goulburn, and one at Maitland. He was despatched to the Bogan to find the remains of Richard Cunningham, the botanist, and succeeded in doing so, and a tablet was erected on the spot. On the fourth regiment proceeding to India Captain Zouch sold out. He was for some years engaged in pastoral pursuits at Ashly, Lake George. On the discovery of gold at Ophir, and the consequent rush thither, he received the appointment as Gold Commissioner at the town, where he remained until 1853, in which year he accepted the post of Superintendent of Mounted Patrol for Main Roads. This position he retained until the mounted patrol was amalgamated with the general police under Police Act of 1862. Since then Captain Zouch has remained in charge as General Superintendent of Police for the Southern Districts. He has the excellent qualification of always obtaining the confidence and esteem of the men under his control. During the bushranging era and on many other occasions Captain Zouch was distinguished for his courage, foresight, and ability. He has at various times during the absence of Mr. Fosbery fulfilled the duties of Inspector-General of Police.
The captain was a man universally respected and liked. Actuated partly perhaps by disinclination for it, and prevented maybe by pressure of official duties, he never figured prominently as a public man. For some years he occupied the honorable position of president of the Goulburn Hospital, and he was also for a great length of time a warden of St. Nicholas’ Church. With all classes of the community he has always been a favorite, rendered so by his gentlemanly demeanour and his quiet mode of life ; for, meddling not with things which did not concern him, he was one of those of whom it might be said –

He was of a most benevolent disposition, and was full of a charity that loves to exercise itself in unostentatious acts of benevolence. To the appeal of suffering he never turned a deaf ear, but was ever ready to relieve those who came to him in genuine distress. To that no doubt is to be attributed his great popularity amongst the poorer classes, who lose in him a friend they will find it hard to replace.
As an officer the captain was one of the most efficient in the public service. His career was one of honor, and he has never had one of his decisions questioned. To the men under him he was at once just and considerate; and in their great respect for him is one of the strongest proofs of his worth as a man and a superior.
Captain Zouch’s near surviving relatives are a widow, four sons, and three daughters.
Before opening the business of the Police Court yesterday, the Police Magistrate said he regretted to learn-last night the death of Captain Zouch, a late member of the Goulburn bench of justices, and an officer of the crown for 50 years in this colony. It was usual, he believed, to show respect to the memory of deceased gentlemen in such cases, by adjourning courts with which they had been connected, but on the present occasion this custom could not be well adhered to, as it would prove detrimental to the public business. Be could only therefore express the regret of the bench to learn of the deceased’s death.
The funeral takes place this afternoon at four o’clock.

Mr. E. V. Morrisset, Superintendent of Police in the southern districts, accompanied by Mrs. Morrisset, arrived in Braidwood ( says the Dispatch ) on Monday from Goulburn. Soon after his arrival, the Superintendent ( with Mr. Walter Casey, Sub-inspector ) paid a visit to the gaol, and was highly pleased at the manner in which the prison arrangements are being carried out by Mr. Luke Densy, as well as the extreme tidiness and cleanliness of the cells and the establishment generally. The police barracks were also examined, and every thing found to be in tip-top order.

Mr. E. V. Morrisset, Superintendent of Police and Deputy Inspector-General, died yesterday morning at his residence here. Deceased was son of the late Colonel Morrisset, who, in his time had charge of the convict establishment at Norfolk Island. Deceased filled the position of Police Superintendent at Bathurst and Maitland prior to his appointment to this district, which took place about the end of 1883 shortly after the death of Captain ( Henry ) Zouch.
Deceased was in his 57th year. As an officer he was thoroughly conversant with his duties, and knew how to discharge them, so as to win both the confidence and esteem of his subordinates.
Mr. Morriset had been in bad health prior to his death. The disease which affected him is known as Addison’s disease.
The Inspector-General of Police is expected here by to-nights train.

IT is with extreme regret that we have to announce the death of a very able and popular officer of the police force in the person of Mr. Edric V. Morisset, superintendent of the Southern police district, and deputy inspector-general of police, which took place at 4 o’clock yesterday morning at his residence, Goulburn. The deceased had been for some time ailing, but, from the nature of his complaint, it was not thought that fatal consequences would be the result. He, however, took a change for the worse a few days since, and gradually sank until the vital spark departed at the hour mentioned. We may mention that the deceased had been in charge of the North-western district for nearly twenty years, his head-quarters being at Maitland; and during the whole of that lengthy period he discharged his duties, both as a public officer and as a private citizen, in a manner which gained for him universal approbation. Upon the introduction of the new Police Act in March, 1862. Superintendent Morisset, who had previously held the rank of inspector in the Queensland native police, received the commission of superintendent under that law, and since that time up to his death he was an active officer, and administrator of police improvement. Some few years ago upon the death of Captain Zouch, superintendent of police at Goulburn, the deceased received the appointment of Deputy Inspector-General of Police, and was transferred from Maitland to Goulburn. It is sad to relate, in connection with the deceased, that it is only a few months since his brother, Adolphus Morisset, police magistrate at Deniliquin, died.
Superintendent Morrisset had been married for many years, but had no issue, He was about 55 years of age, a native of the colony, and was a son of the late Colonel Morisset, well known in the early days of the colony. The country has sustained the loss of one of our most zealous and intelligent officers by the death of Superintendent Morisset. The deceased was a lover of manly sports, such as horse-racing, hunting, shooting, etc.

DEATH OF SUPERINTENDENT MORISSET. – For some time past the state of health of Mr. Edric N. V. Morisset, superintendent of police for the southern district, has been a source of anxiety to his friends. He was suffering from an uncommon disease known as Addison’s disease of the kidneys, and during the past week or two his illness had become so serious that hope of his recovery had been abandoned. We regret to record that the fears entertained of a fatal issue were sadly realised, and that Mr. Morisset passed away at an early hour yesterday morning, at his residence, Marston, North Goulburn.
The deceased gentleman was fifty-seven years of age and had been many years in the public service.
He was born in Norfolk Island, his father being Colonel Morisset of the 48th Regiment, commandant in the island and afterwards police magistrate at Newcastle and Bathurst.
Mr. Edric Morisset entered the colonial service in February 1853, and was commandant of native police in Queensland, at that time known as Moreton Bay and forming part of the colony of New South Wales. On the separation of Queensland in 185 he remained in the service there, and in 1860 was appointed inspector-general of police. About two years afterwards, for climatic reasons, he resigned this post and came to New South Wales, where in March 1862 he was appointed superintendent of police for the western district ; subsequently he was transferred to the Maitland district ; and shortly after the death of Captain Zouch, superintendent of police for the southern district, which occurred in October 1883, he was appointed his successor, a position he retained till his death.
He was married to Miss Lawson, daughter of the late Mr. William Lawson of Prospect, who survives him, but he had no family.
It is interesting to note that Mr. and Mrs. Morisset were brought from Norfolk Island as children by the late Captain Zouch.
Mr. Morisset was brother to the late Mr. R. R. Morisset, police magistrate of Deniliquin, whom he visited in his sickness and whose death a few months ago had a strong effect upon him.
At the time of his death Mr. Edric Morisset was the oldest superintendent of police in the service. He was a somewhat strict disciplinarian, but well liked by the men under his command. In private life, he was unostentatious and charitable. He was fond of sport and a good shot. He was formerly a promoter of the Northern Hunt Club, and tried to inaugurate a similar club here, but failed to enlist general support to the movement.
His funeral will take place to-morrow afternoon at the Church of England cemetery.
During the illness of Mr. Morisset his duties have been performed by Inspector Brennan of Yass, who remains in charge temporarily.

THE funeral of the late Mr. Superintendent Morisset took place on Sunday afternoon last. The morning was dull and threatening, and shortly after noon rain fell most copiously. Not withstanding this a large company took part in the sad ceremonies. The procession moved from “Marston” about half-past three, being headed by six mounted troopers under the charge of Sub-inspector Casey, Braidwood. The coffin came next, and was borne to the church by six members of the police force. Many tokens of respect in the shape of wreaths were placed upon the shell. Four other members of the police, under the command of Sub-inspector Fenton, and twenty-one warders from the gaol, under Deputy-gaoler Graham, followed the body. Amongst the chief mourners were the brother of the deceased, Mr. H. Morisset; the Inspector general of Police, Mr. E. Fosbery; Captain Battye, Albury; Inspector Brennan, Yass; and Mr. T. K. Abbott, Sydney Stipendiary Magistrate. In the procession were many of the leading townspeople. The Bishop of Goulburn read the opening part of the burial service at St. Nicholas’s, and the procession then proceeded to the C.E. cemetery, where the service was concluded.

The fourth Police Dog killed ‘ on duty ‘ was Police Dog Carts, who died after being stabbed during a police operation at Corrimal Surf Life Saving Club on December 9 last year. Last Wednesday, 18-year-old Nemanja Vukadinovic, of Balgownie, was sentenced to 18 months’ jail for fatally stabbing Carts.

A POLICE dog named after a slain officer was stabbed to death yesterday morning after successfully cornering a fleeing suspect.
Senior police yesterday paid tribute to veteran Police Dog Carts, who was raised by police and named after murdered officer Constable David Carty.
Carts and his handler Senior Constable Brett Williams, were called to Corrimal Surf Life Saving Club north of Wollongong just after 3am yesterday following reports of a break in. Two offenders allegedly fled the scene when police arrived, with officers apprehending one of the men. The second alleged offender, an 18-year-old Balgownie man, fled and was chased by Carts into nearby bushes and cornered.”It will be alleged Police Dog Carts was stabbed with a sharp implement and later died in a veterinary hospital from his wounds,” a police spokesman said yesterday. “On this occasion, Carts was not wearing a vest as there was no indication of those people on the premises having any weapons.”
Special stab proof vests were brought in after Police Dog Titan was stabbed to death three years ago but Carts was not wearing one because it was believed the alleged offenders were unarmed.
Titan was the first police dog to be stabbed in the line of duty. His killer Luke Graham Curtis was last year sentenced to seven years jail over the killing.
Chief Superintendent Wayne Benson said Carts had served NSW Police with honour and in his final act had secured the arrest of an alleged offender.
“Without doubt he served with honour, he has performed his task, that was what he was trained for and tragically he has died,” Supt Benson said.
He said Carts death also highlighted the terrible loss of Constable Carty who was murdered at Fairfield in 1997.
“The death of David Carty still lives on in all our memories and whether it is this incident or any other, it is just the nature of police work,” Supt Benson said.
Carts’ first handler Sen-Constable David Williamson last year paid tribute to the special connection between his charge and Constable Carty when he took Carts to a memorial service.
Both alleged offenders were charged with aggravated break and enter and take conveyance without consent of owner.
Carts‘ alleged killer was also charged with kill or seriously injure animal used for law enforcement and use weapon to resist arrest. He was refused bail and will face court today.

On Thursday 8 December 1881, the Mounted Constable who had only been stationed at Goulburn for about six weeks after leaving the Police Depot ( Redfern Police Academy ), was riding his Police Mount with Mounted Constable Pritzler to Mummel ( an area nth west of Goulburn ) to fetch a person suspected to be of unsound mind.
Maule was riding ahead and Pritzler was behind, when Maule‘s horse shied and plunged forward over a log, causing Maule ( an inexperienced rider ) to lose one of his stirrups. The horse jumped a second log and Maule lost his second stirrup iron and was unseated and fell with his head violently against a tree.
Maule, unconscious and bleeding from the nose, was later loaded into a buggy, with the assistance of the messenger and the prisoner, and taken into Goulburn Hospital – arriving there about 5.30pm.
Maule died from his injuries about 10.30pm as a result of his injuries, including a smashed lower jaw, a split lip, broken nose and severe cut over the temple & concussion of the brain.
Maule was not married.
An Inquest was held on Friday 9 December 1881 with a verdict that Maule was killed by being thrown from his horse accidentally, and added as a rider that they think that more discretion might be exercised in the Sydney depot as to the horsemanship of the men they send out for duty in the country.

Maule joined the New South Wales Police Force in June 1881. He left England and came to Australia, though it appears his siblings remained in England. We don’t know why he chose to come to Australia and join the NSW Police Force. Two of his brothers served in the military, as did his father, and one of his brothers was a solicitor. His grandfather was a chaplain and his great-grandfather – mayor, alderman and burgess of Huntingdon.

An inquest was held last evening at the Goulburn Hospital by the coroner, Mr. Betts, on the body of William Norman St. George Maule, who had died from the effects of injuries received on the previous day. The jury having been sworn and the body viewed, the following evidence was taken: — Simon Pritzler, a mounted policeman stationed at Goulburn, deposed: The body just viewed was that of constable Maule, of the N.S.W. police ; he had been in the force since last June; the deceased was single and 28 years of age ; on Thursday afternoon last he and witness were going to Mummel and got along all right for about 13 miles, when the deceased’s horse shied to the right of a tree and Maule had pulled him to the left; then he had lost one of his stirrup-irons, when the horse bolted, and about 20 yards away witness saw the horse jump a log, when the deceased lost his other stirrup-iron ; witness then saw the deceased lying on the horse’s neck ; the horse took another bound and the deceased fell off; witness, on galloping up, found him lying on the ground insensible; the deceased’s face was all knocked in ; he sent for assistance and fetched him into Goulburn Hospital in a buggy ; he never recovered consciousness and died five hours after the accident occurred ; witness thought deceased must have been dashed against a tree by the horse just after falling off as it rushed on. Deceased was not a good horseman, having no control over his reins.
Dr. Gentle deposed that he had been asked to see the deceased on the previous evening and found him in a comatose condition with nose broken also lower jaw. He found in addition a wound over left eve about 2 inches in length exposing the bone; blood flowed from his right ear. He believed concussion of the brain to be the cause of death. The jury returned a verdict that the deceased met his death by being accidentally thrown from his horse and they would like to add a rider to the effect that they think more discretion might be exercised in the Sydney depot as to the horsemanship of the men sent out for duty service in the country.
( On Tuesday 7 October 2014, I attended the Mortis Street General Cemetery, Goulburn, in an attempt to locate the grave of this Constable. Unfortunately, this historic cemetery is in an extremely poor state with most of the head stones having fallen and most of the graves heavily overgrown with weeds.
There are hundreds of graves at this location, dating back to the early – mid 1800’s. I had to attend the local library where I obtained the attached ‘ plan ‘ of the cemetery in order to find plat CE79 – the recorded location of the Constables grave.
I returned to the cemetery but, at this stage, could not find CE79 at the location as there are many unmarked graves and fallen head stones in this, Goulburns second oldest cemetery which was established in the late 1830’s. )

Some records have him buried at Goulburn Anglican Cemetery, Cemetery St, Goulburn ( near the gaol ) plot CE79 but his grave is located at the St Saviour’s Cemetery, Cemetery Rd, Goulburn, OPPOSITE the Goulburn Gaol & NOT in the Mortis St Cemetery.
On Tuesday 24 April 2018 I attended the St Saviour’s Cemetery, Cemetery Rd, Goulburn, opposite the Goulburn Gaol where I located the grave of MAULE.

During my research for my website, I have come across another NSW Mounted Constable who was killed ‘ on duty ‘ at Goulburn on Thursday 8 December 1853 as result of horse accident.

Ashley HARDIN, aka Bull, died as the result of a gun shot wound to the head with his service revolver.
He committed suicide as a result of how Police management treated him in relation to a 181D ( show cause why his employment should not be terminated ).
The NSW Police Commissioner at the time was Peter Ryan.

Ray Lambie: Gosh it is bad today! I went to Sutherland in 1998 & I was a team leader there. Bull was on my team and had suffered a malicious complaint arising from a domestic dispute that had occurred prior to his entry to the academy. Every time the domestic dispute was re visited a complaint was lodged with NSWPOL. He was cleared to enter the job, cleared whilst in the job on a number of occasions. In 1998 when the domestic complaint was raised again PIAB decided to give Bull a 181D ostensibly to make him do the work to get out of the complaint merry go round. He was suspended. He one day came in and took his service revolver to Darks Forest and committed suicide. On the day of his funeral I returned to the Sutherland Police Station and submitted my resignation. An absolute disgrace.
